Abstract

Curly chili (Capsicum annuum L.) is a horticultural commodity of significant economic value in Indonesia. However, its production frequently encounters challenges due to pests and diseases. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of liquid organic fertilizer (POC) in mitigating pest and disease attacks on curly chili plants. The study was conducted from March to December 2024 at the Experimental Garden of the Department of Agriculture, Bogor Agricultural Development Polytechnic. The experiment employed a nested plot design, incorporating two levels of NPK fertiliser application and three levels of POC doses. The parameters observed encompassed the population of the primary pests, the presence of natural enemies, and the incidence of the predominant diseases. The findings indicated that the application of POC at optimal doses was effective in suppressing pest populations and reducing the incidence of diseases, particularly Cucumber Mosaic Virus (CMV) (10.69%) and Pepper Yellow Leaf Curl Virus (13.97%).Consequently, the study concluded that the application of POC holds considerable potential as an environmentally sustainable alternative in the curly chili cultivation system, thereby reducing reliance on chemical pesticides.

Abstract

The development and utilization of peat soil as a plant growing medium cannot be separated from limiting factors, one of which is the chemical properties of peat, namely low pH, very high cation exchange capacity (CEC) with very low base saturation (KB), and low macro and micro nutrients, resulting in low soil fertility and inhibited nutrients for plants. The provision of ameliorant in the form of sea mud is one alternative to improve the chemical properties of peat. The use of sea mud as a soil conditioner can improve the chemical properties of peat considering its high base content such as Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg), Sodium (Na) and Potassium (K) cations. The high base content in sea mud can improve nutrient availability, low pH availability, can increase base saturation and reduce the high cation exchange capacity in peat soil. Improvement of peat soil characteristics with the addition of sea mud ameliorant can affect peat soil fertility. The purpose of this study was to study and analyze the role of sea mud in improving the chemical properties of peat. This study uses descriptive analysis by testing laboratory data of liquid sea mud. The parameters used in this study are soil pH, base saturation, cation exchange capacity, Sodium, Calcium, Potassium and Magnesium. The provision of sea mud on peat soil is given at a level of 5% and 7.5% on 10 kg of peat soil. The use of sea mud at a level of 7.5% gives better results in terms of decreasing the value of cation exchange capacity, increasing pH, increasing base saturation, increasing sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium elements. Initial analysis of initial soil pH ranges from 3.37, KB 7.74% and CEC 119.66 cmol (+) kg-1, Sodium content 0.6 cmol (+) kg-1, calcium 5.37 cmol (+) kg-1, potassium 0.37 cmol (+) kg-1, and Magnesium 2.87 cmol (+) kg-1. But after the treatment of 7.5% sea mud there was an increase in pH to 3.54, KB 17.49% and CEC 112.29 cmol (+) kg-1, Magnesium 10.72 cmol (+) kg-1, Calcium 7.20 cmol (+) kg-1, and Sodium 0.66 cmol (+) kg1. The results of the study showed that the provision of sea mud on peat soil can improve the chemical properties of peat, especially the provision of sea mud at a level of 7.5%. This proves that the use of sea mud has great potential in improving the limiting factors found in peat soil.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the imbibition rate of bean seeds (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) through soaking in distilled water (aquades) for 32 hours. The imbibition process was observed by measuring the seed weight every two hours using a digital scale. A total of 25 seeds were used for each replication, with five replications conducted. The results showed that water uptake occurred rapidly during the first 8 hours and then slowed down and showed no further imbibition activity until the 32nd hour. The data revealed a characteristic imbibition curve pattern, providing valuable insights for pre-sowing seed treatment to enhance germination efficiency. This research is important to determine how long farmers should soak seeds before planting to achieve optimal germination while preventing excessive soaking that may cause seed rot.

Abstract

Maize was one of the most important food crops in the world; therefore, the demand for corn continued to increase in line with the growing global population. In general, increasing maize productivity was achieved by fulfilling the requirements for macro and micronutrients, as well as ensuring supportive environmental conditions so that the plants could grow well. One of the essential micronutrients needed by plants was zinc. This study aimed to determine the effect of zinc nutrient application on the growth and yield of purple maize of the Jantan F1 variety, as well as to identify the optimal zinc application treatment to enhance the growth and production of this variety. This research was conducted from September 14, 2024 to November 23, 2024 at the Integrated Field Laboratory and Seed and Plant Breeding Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Lampung. The research was conducted using a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) consisting of five treatments with a single factor: P0 (control/no zinc application); P1 (seed priming with Zn 0.5%); P2 (seed priming with Zn 0.5% + foliar Zn 0.1% at 10, 20, and 30 DAP); P3 (seed priming with Zn 0.5% + foliar Zn 0.1% at 30, 40, and 50 DAP); and P4 (seed priming with Zn 0.5% + foliar Zn 0.1% at anthesis, 7 days after pollination (DAPn), and 14 DAPn). The experiment was conducted with four replications, resulting in 20 experimental units. The results showed that the application of zinc nutrients to the purple maize of the Jantan F1 variety improved plant growth, as reflected in plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, and chlorophyll content. In addition, zinc nutrient application also increased yield, as indicated by variables such as cob weight with husk, cob weight without husk, number of rows per cob, and number of kernels per cob. The best treatment was zinc priming 0.5% combined with foliar Zn 0.1% applied at the anthesis stage, 7 DAPn, and 14 DAPn.

Abstract

Frozen food is a popular food product due to its long shelf life and ease of preparation. However, conventional freezing processes at high temperatures can reduce nutritional and sensory quality. Non-thermal technologies such as High Pressure Processing (HPP) are innovative solutions to maintain quality without high heating. This article examines the potential application of HPP in frozen food to improve product quality and safety. The method used is a literature review of the latest studies on the working principles, effectiveness, and impacts of HPP on the physical, chemical, and microbiological characteristics of food ingredients. High Pressure Processing (HPP) is able to deactivate pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms at a pressure of 200–600 MPa without damaging sensitive components such as vitamins, proteins, and natural pigments. However, the response of food ingredients to HPP varies depending on their characteristics, such as water content, protein type, and fat content.
