Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of digital navigation equipment and publications and identify efforts to improve navigation effectiveness on MV. Lodestar Adventure. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed. The research subjects consisted of the Captain, Chief Officer, Third Officer, and Apprentice Officer, selected through purposive sampling based on their direct involvement in operating digital navigation systems. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and literature review, while data analysis followed the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the implementation of digital navigation systems, including the Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS), Automatic Identification System (AIS), Global Positioning System (GPS), Radar, and Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC), has improved navigation effectiveness. However, several challenges remain, such as delayed ENC updates, suboptimal safety parameter settings, differences in crew competency in utilizing advanced ECDIS features, and overreliance on digital systems without adequate visual verification. Efforts to improve navigation effectiveness include regular ENC updates, continuous crew training and briefings, strengthened coordination among watch officers, and the application of cross-checking between digital navigation systems and visual observation. Therefore, effective navigation depends not only on advanced technology but also on competent human resources, up-to-date navigation data, and consistent implementation of safety procedures.

Abstract

Ships rely on properly maintained statutory certificates to ensure safe and efficient maritime operations. However, PT Sinarmas LDA Maritime has experienced delays in renewing safety and construction certificates and radio certificates, disrupting delivery schedules, increasing idle time, and limiting vessel operations. This study aims to systematically evaluate the partial and simultaneous effects of delays in renewing these three certificate types on ship operational smoothness and identify the most influential factor. A quantitative research design was employed using multiple linear regression analysis. Data were collected from 70 purposively selected respondents comprising land and sea employees of PT Sinarmas LDA Maritime. Data were processed using SPSS version 27 through validity and reliability tests, classical assumption tests, including normality, multicollinearity, and heteroscedasticity tests, and hypothesis testing using t-test, F-test, and coefficient of determination. The regression equation obtained was Y = 5.649 + 0.142X1 + 0.076X2 + 0.553X3, with an R² of 0.524, indicating that the three independent variables collectively explain 52.4% of the variation in ship operational smoothness. Simultaneously, certificate renewal delays significantly affect ship operational smoothness (F = 24.263; p < 0.001). Partially, only delays in radio certificate renewal have a significant effect (p < 0.001), whereas delays in safety and construction certificate renewals do not show significant effects. These findings emphasize the need to strengthen certificate administration through digital-based monitoring systems, enabling timely renewal, reducing operational disruptions, minimizing idle time, and supporting safer and more efficient vessel operations, particularly regarding radio certificate compliance and strengthening overall maritime service reliability and continuity.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the assignment of the red channel to imported furniture, which requires document and physical inspection before the issuance of the Goods Release Approval Letter (Surat Persetujuan Pengeluaran Barang – SPPB), delaying customs clearance and increasing logistics costs. This study analyzes the red channel determination process for furniture imports handled by PT Jasco Logistics Surabaya, identifies obstacles and assesses their impact on import efficiency. A descriptive qualitative method was employed. Data were collected through observations, interviews with operational and Export Import (Exim) staff, and documentation. Data analysis followed the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana model, comprising data collection, condensation, display, and conclusion verification. The findings show that red channel determination is based on the Directorate General of Customs and Excise risk management system through the CEISA Service Computer System (SKP), considering the importer's profile, commodity characteristics, and random selection mechanisms. The handling process involves receiving import documents, preparing the Import Declaration (Pemberitahuan Impor Barang – PIB), red channel assignment, physical inspection, and customs clearance. Key obstacles include lengthy physical inspections, queues in the behandle area, container transfers to the Customs Temporary Storage Facility (Tempat Penimbunan Pabean – PLP), and issuance of Customs Tariff and/or Customs Value Assessment Letters (Surat Penetapan Tarif dan/atau Nilai Pabean – SPTNP). These obstacles cause cargo release delays, increased demurrage and warehouse rental costs, and reduced operational efficiency. The study concludes that stronger stakeholder coordination and greater accuracy in customs document preparation are essential for supporting a smoother and more efficient import process.

Abstract

This research, titled “Analysis of Anchor System Disturbance to Support Crew Safety During the Letgo Process on MV. Isa Express,” examines the causes and impacts of an anchor system failure that occurred on 10 April 2025. During the letgo operation, the windlass brake malfunctioned, causing an uncontrolled anchor chain runaway and creating a serious safety hazard for the crew on the forecastle deck. The study aims to identify the factors contributing to the disturbance, assess its impact on crew safety, and propose corrective and preventive measures. A qualitative descriptive case study approach was employed using data collected through onboard observation, interviews with the Master, deck officers, Bosun, and deck ratings, and documentation analysis. The findings reveal that the incident resulted from three interconnected factors: excessive wear of the windlass brake lining combined with corrosion of the brake lever, a Planned Maintenance System that remained largely reactive, and delayed follow-up on the Bosun’s earlier brake condition report. These deficiencies significantly increased the risk of injury to the deck crew, although a more serious accident was prevented by the prompt response of the duty officer. To improve operational safety, the study recommends implementing a preventive maintenance strategy, conducting brake function tests before every letgo operation, and ensuring timely follow-up of maintenance reports to enhance anchor system reliability and crew safety.

Abstract

The turbocharger is a vital component of a ship's main engine, responsible for supplying pressurized scavenging air into the combustion chamber to optimize combustion performance. Operational issues with the main engine turbocharger on MV. Pekan Sampit led to a decline in engine performance. This study aims to identify the risk factors associated with sub-optimal turbocharger maintenance, evaluate their impact on main engine performance, and formulate mitigation strategies on MV. Pekan Sampit. A descriptive qualitative research method was employed, utilizing an integrated approach of the Fishbone Diagram and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA). The results indicate that the primary risk factor originates from the Machine category (RPN 276.75) due to bushing and shaft wear, followed by Material (RPN 214.50) and Method (RPN 212.00) caused by fouling on the air filter/aftercooler and delays in the Planned Maintenance System (PMS). Consequently, these issues triggered a reduction in scavenge air pressure, incomplete combustion, an exhaust gas temperature (EGT) surge up to 460°C, and a drop in engine speed from 1,210 RPM to 1,140 RPM. Optimization efforts involve replacing worn components, cleaning the air filter and aftercooler, maintaining the seawater cooler, and strictly implementing the PMS along with daily monitoring.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the management of Phytosanitary Certificate documents in veneer wood export activities at PT. Jasco Logistics Surabaya Branch, identify obstacles encountered, and examine the company’s efforts to overcome them. A qualitative method with a single case study design was employed. Data were collected through interviews with export document staff, operational staff, and the Branch Manager, supported by direct observation and documentation. Data were analyzed using an interactive model consisting of data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was ensured through source triangulation, technique triangulation, and member checking. The results show that Phytosanitary Certificate management generally follows six stages of quarantine procedures: user registration, submission of the Quarantine Inspection Application, administrative inspection, quarantine action through physical inspection, determination of inspection results, and certificate issuance and distribution. These stages are complemented by operational activities, including preparation of prerequisite documents, cargo space booking, and buyer approval of the draft certificate before final issuance. The main obstacles are the long buyer approval process, ranging from one to four days, and data discrepancies identified during stuffing. To address these obstacles, the company implements preventive measures, including routine reminders, document verification, additional time buffers, and coordination with quarantine authorities. Reactive measures include negotiations with warehouse owners when operational problems occur. The study concludes that effective document management requires timely coordination among the company, buyers, warehouses, and quarantine authorities. Strengthening communication with buyers is particularly important to accelerate draft approval and support a more efficient veneer wood export process.

Abstract

This is the revised author guidelines and article template of the Jurnal Aplikasi Pelayaran and Abstract: This study aims to analyse the types and causes of container damage, evaluate the mitigation strategies implemented, and analyse the impact of container damage on the smooth distribution of logistics at PT. Lintas Kumala Abadi Surabaya. The study uses a qualitative approach with an empirical case study method during the Land Practice (PRADA) activities for the period July 2025–January 2026. Primary data were obtained through in-depth interviews with inventory operational staff, field operations, and drivers, as well as direct observation and Estimate of Repair (EOR) documents. The results showed that the dominant types of damage included dents on walls, corrosion on bottom rails, leaks/holes in the roof (roof holes), worn rubber gaskets, damaged plywood floors, and dysfunction of the locking system (door locking system). The main causes of damage are divided into human factors (human error in handling heavy equipment) and maritime environmental factors (high salinity and extreme weather). The company implemented preventive mitigation (pre-trip inspection and 3-month training), operational mitigation (digital group coordination and fleet monitoring), and corrective mitigation (EOR-based physical repairs). The implementation of mitigation has proven effective in minimising the risk of cargo damage, preventing unexpected costs (demurrage/claims), and maintaining the smoothness and reliability of multimodal logistics distribution.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the customs clearance process, identify the causes of demurrage charges, and determine the stages at PT Varia Usaha Dharma Segara that carry the highest risk of incurring such charges. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, utilizing data collection techniques such as observation, interviews, and document review. Data analysis involved data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, with validity verified through triangulation. The results indicate that while the customs clearance process generally complies with customs regulations, delays in receiving the original Bill of Lading (B/L) are the primary cause of demurrage charges; these delays hinder the issuance of the Delivery Order (DO), causing container release to exceed the allotted "free time." The stages involving the receipt of the original B/L and the processing of the DO pose the greatest risk of incurring demurrage charges. Therefore, improved coordination and document monitoring are required to minimize delays in the import process.
