Abstract

Supraspinatus tendinosis is a common source of shoulder pain. This tendinopathy is in most cases caused by an impingement of the supraspinatus tendon on the acromion as it passes between the acromion and the humeral head. Pain, and a decrease in range of motion, strength and functionality are the main complaints that accompany this injury. Being one of the well-established techniques, Sports wet cupping therapy (WCT) was used to treat a case of Supraspinatus tendinosis in this study. This paper aims to report the improved case of supraspinatus tendinosis using the treatment with sports cupping.  We used sports cupping therapy for treatment of this patient. This case is measured and assessed by visual analogue scale (VAS), shoulder range of motion (ROM) and shoulder physical examination. Results show the VAS decreased from 10 to 1 and the patient showed nearly full shoulder range of motion in forward flexion, abduction, extension, internal rotation and external rotation. In addition, the physical examination of shoulder and MRI was improved. Sports cupping treatment with wet cupping therapy is found to be helpful to relieve pain and recover function of shoulder joint.

Abstract

Prophetic medicine comprises the teaching of the prophet Mohammad with regards to nutrition, hygiene, sickness, cure and prevention of the ailments. “Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) would visit an ill person, he would said:‘[O Allah,] make the harm go away, Lord of mankind, and heal him, You are the Healer, there is no healing except your healing, a healing that does not leave any sickness. Healing with the Medicine of the Prophet (PBUH)  is the remedy for well-being, good health and soul. Prophetic medicines promote healing, prevention and cure of ailments. The review article is an effort to explore detailed analysis of prophetic medicines and natural herbs in oral care. The article is focused on the uses of miswak, honey, black seed, olives, senna and idhkhir for oral therapeutic uses. The studies, experiments and research have demonstrated that the prophetic medicines and herbs provide benefits in oral care. However, the research conducted on some herbs are limited to in vitro studies, thus further studies are required to be carried out on  animals  or humans to achieve accurate results. Furthermore, other herbs mentioned in prophetic medicines like tannumah (aloes), daghabis (dill seed), dates, cortus, need to be explored and further studied for therapeutic use in oral care.

Abstract

Over time, the use of herbal medicines has increased rapidly. This is influenced by several main factors, including the relatively cheap price and avoiding concerns about the side effects of chemical drugs. In practice, screening tests need to be carried out on a drug product that will be marketed, one of which is through a toxicity test. The use of animal models as experimental materials provides invaluable information in many aspects of pathophysiology, treatment, and diagnosis of human disease. Without exception, research on traditional ingredients also relies heavily on animals in in vivo, in situ, and in vitro experiments. This study uses a literature review with a descriptive approach based on secondary literature derived from Google Scholar, PubMed, and Science Direct. Research conducted on animals regarding herbal medicine can provide valuable insights into a herbal remedy. Selecting the appropriate animal for a study is crucial to obtain scientifically convincing results. Animals used for pharmacological studies should be standard species. Rodents, guinea pigs, rabbits, cats, and dogs are often used in traditional herbal medicine research. Moreover, herbal materials used for pharmacological research should be standardized to control quality and ensure the reproducibility of experimental outcomes. The standardization of herbal medicine should encompass species identification (name, origin, description, and purity), extraction procedures, chemical analysis of major and bioactive compounds, heavy metals, pesticides, and storage stability.

Abstract

Resilience plays a very important role for medical students. The formation of resilience in overcoming problems is closely related to spirituality. Spirituality helps individuals see problems as part of the learning and growth process. The aim of this research is to identify whether there is a positive relationship between the level of spirituality and the level of resilience. This research is an analytical observational research with a cross sectional approach. Sampling was carried out using a random sampling technique with a total research sample of 100 medical students. Measurement of the level of spirituality was carried out using the Daily Spiritual Experience Scale (DSES) questionnaire, while measurement of the level of resilience was carried out with the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC 25) questionnaire. Bivariate analysis of the two variables used the Spearman correlation test. The result of the bivariate analysis test using Spearman obtained a significance value of p<0,05 which shows that the relationship between the independent variable and the dependent variable is significant. The level of spirituality and the level of resilience is positively correlated in medical students.

Abstract

Chronic Low Back Pain (CLBP) or Low Back Pain (NPB) is pain between the costal and gluteal margins that persists for over three months. LPB is a common disease. Fifty percent of the world's population is estimated to experience LBP by 30, and 70% of the population will experience LBP at some point in their adulthood. There is no gold standard for LBP therapy, so the therapy needed depends on the patient. One of the therapies used is acupuncture therapy. In a randomized clinical trial, acupuncture therapy demonstrated greater effectiveness in reducing pain intensity for patients with chronic LBP compared to administering oral baclofen at a dose of 30 mg/day. Another study in Germany with 1162 research subjects also found that providing acupuncture therapy in the treatment of chronic LBP had more significant efficacy on the patient's pain and functional status than conventional therapy.

Abstract

There is insufficient quantitative data available on the characteristics of research conducted on cupping therapy. This insufficiency complicates our ability to achieve a more profound understanding of the subject.  The primary aim of this work was to assess the outcome of clinical studies outputs in cupping therapy and discuss methodological gaps. Six databases PubMed, Cochrane Library, Medline, TUBITAK ULAKBIM DergiPark, Science Direct, and Google Scholar, were systematically searched from their inception to January 2024. Performance analysis was made in the study. Frequency and distributions were analyzed with SPSS 24. The software Wordclouds software was used to generate visualization. Within the scope of the research, 26 studies that met the selection criteria were accessed. It was determined that the majority of the studies (46.16%) were written in 2019-2021. The most used technique was  3 S (73.07%), and the most preferred point was du 14 point. While the top two variables are oxidative stress and heavy metal levels, the co-word analysis of keywords showed that "wet cupping therapy" was the largest single node. The findings from this bibliometric study provide the current status and productivity in clinical research of cupping therapy over the past ten years. It is seen that despite the challenges facing the field of cupping research, which include standardization, legal, and reporting quality, there has been an increase in publications to mitigate disease-related symptoms in clinical populations.

Abstract

Cancer is a type of chronic disease which is the main cause of death in the world with 19.3 million new cases in 2020. Current cancer treatment includes surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormone therapy, antiangiogenesis inhibitors, stem cell therapy, and others. Long-term cancer treatment can cause other health problems, so alternative anti-cancer therapy with the fewest side effects is needed. One natural ingredient that is known to prevent and act as anti-cancer therapy is Zingiber officinale. Zingiber officinale contains gingerol which functions as an anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-cancer, anti-tumor and anti-mutagenic. The anticancer effects of gingerol are known to be effective in cancers of the liver, stomach, mouth, prostate, breast and ovaries. This literature aims to delve deeper into the role of gingerol as an anti-cancer compound. The strategy employed in the article search involved using electronic databases such as Google Scholar and PubMed. Keywords utilized included "cancer," "red ginger," "gingerol," "Zingiber officinale," and "anticancer." The articles selected were those published within the last 10 years. The study results indicate that gingerol is beneficial in oral, breast, lung, colorectal, cervical, and prostate cancers. The mechanism of action of gingerol involves pathways such as the PI3K/AKT, JAK/STAT, apoptosis, and ROS proliferation pathways. Gingerol is known to be effective as an anti-cancer agent and has the potential to become one of the alternative anti-cancer treatments.

Abstract

Olive oil is a key component of the Mediterranean diet, renowned for its flavor and health benefits, especially for its polyphenol content. These polyphenols have strong antioxidant properties, protecting cells from oxidative stress and reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and neurodegenerative disorders. This study aims to systematically identify and quantify the main polyphenols in different types of olive oil, including Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO), Virgin Olive Oil (VOO), Refined Olive Oil (ROO), Pure Olive Oil (POO), and Pomace Olive Oil. Using a qualitative approach and descriptive analysis, a comprehensive literature study was conducted to collect and evaluate research on polyphenol content in various olive oils. The results showed significant differences in polyphenol profiles. EVOO, which is produced through cold pressing without heat or chemicals, has the highest polyphenol content, offers superior health benefits and complex flavors. VOO, although more processed, still contained moderately high polyphenols, suitable for medium temperature cooking. ROO, which is extensively processed, has lower polyphenol levels, ideal for high temperature cooking but with fewer health benefits. POO, a blend of VOO and ROO, offers a balance of flavor and practicality. Pomace Olive Oil, with the lowest polyphenol content, is used mainly for industrial frying due to its high smoke point. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the importance of choosing the type of olive oil based on its use and health benefits. EVOO is optimal for raw or lightly cooked dishes, VOO for all- purpose cooking, and ROO and Pomace Olive Oil for high temperature applications. This research guides consumers and manufacturers in making the right choice to optimize the health benefits of olive oil.
