Abstract

The tradition of bejamu to puaka (jinn) is a form of local wisdom of the Sei Berombang community that has been passed down from generation to generation. This practice is carried out as an expression of gratitude, a request for protection, and respect for supernatural entities that are believed to have a role in people's lives. However, from an Islamic perspective, this tradition has the potential to contain elements of shirk because it involves worshiping other than Allah SWT. This study aims to reflect on this tradition through an analysis of the hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad SAW about human interaction with jinn, and to examine how local cultural practices can be harmonized with Islamic beliefs. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive-interpretive methods and literature studies from primary and secondary sources. The results show that although the bejamu tradition has strong cultural roots, its form and purpose need to be adjusted so as not to conflict with Islamic teachings. This tradition can be modified into worship practices such as prayer and alms addressed to Allah SWT. This study contributes to efforts to preserve local culture that maintains the purity of Islamic beliefs and opens up space for harmonization between cultural values and religious teachings.

Abstract

This research aims to reveal Abdul Karim Soroush's Text Hermeneutics as an epistemological solution to the reliability of classical Ulumul Qur'an which gave birth to the contestation of mura>dullah's claim in interpretation when faced with contemporary reality. The type of this research is a literature study, because it relies on non-numerical data. While the data analysis technique used is the Miles and Huberman model. While the data analysis method used is content analysis and linguistic analysis. This research produces three important points. First, by using the hermeneutic theory of al-Qabd} wa al-Bast} (theory of shrinkage and expansion), Soroush shows that the reliability of classical Ulumul Qur'an is not for all times, but it is shrinking and expanding. Interpretation will never be final and demands a fresher dynamism of Ulumul Qur'an according to the demands of the times. Second, mura>dullah's claim on an interpretation under the pretext of the objectivity of interpretation is impossible, because the text has multiple meanings and that is the true will of Allah. Third, the interpretation that is in accordance with muradullah is an interpretation that is methodological (based on theory) even though it produces different meanings and interpretations (interpretive pluralism).

Abstract

The advancement of technology has led to a diverse reception of the Qur'an, transcending traditional frameworks and manifesting through social media. This article examines the reception of the Qur'an in the animated film "Nussa and Rarra: Pahala Gratis," specifically in the episode titled "Pahala Gratis." The study employs a qualitative research method with a literature review as the data collection technique. The analysis utilizes the reception of the Qur'an in three aspects: exegesis, aesthetics, and functionality, aiming to reveal the impact and interaction between the Qur'anic religious message and the audience. Exegetical reception is evident through the quoting of Qur'anic verses by the character Nussa, specifically QS. al-Aʿrāf[7]: 199, which is then applied within the context of the story. Aesthetic reception is reflected in visual elements, animation, and the use of language, creating an aesthetic experience for the audience. Meanwhile, functional reception involves the implementation of religious values in the daily lives of the audience. The research findings indicate that the animated film "Nussa and Rarra: Pahala Gratis" serves not only as entertainment but also as an effective and creative tool for da'wah (religious outreach). The use of animation technology and creative narrative opens the door for the reception of the Qur'an among a broader audience, proving that religious messages can be conveyed through various forms of media, even those intended for entertainment.

Abstract

This study discusses the concept of justice from two major philosophical traditions, namely Islamic philosophy through the thoughts of Al-Farabi and Western philosophy through the thoughts of John Rawls. This study aims to compare and examine how the two figures construct the idea of justice based on their respective philosophical, historical, and cultural contexts. The method used is a qualitative study with a comparative approach and content analysis of Al-Farabi's main works, Al-Madina Al-Fadilah, and A Theory of Justice by John Rawls. The results of the study show that Al-Farabi understands justice as harmony between individuals and society in achieving collective happiness based on reason and sharia, while Rawls defines justice as fairness that emphasizes the principles of freedom and equality through social contracts. Although both are born from different traditions, both view justice as the main foundation of an ideal state life. In conclusion, the synthesis of Al-Farabi and Rawls' thoughts can contribute to the formation of a more holistic paradigm of justice, across cultural and civilizational boundaries.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has changed the way humans communicate, including the emergence of the phenomenon of oversharing, a behavior that involves excessive sharing of personal information on social media. This oversharing phenomenon poses various risks, including the insecurity of one's privacy, the potential for slander, and the potential for damage to one's self-esteem. From an Islamic perspective, particularly based on the hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), maintaining one's own honor and that of others is an obligation that cannot be ignored. This study uses a qualitative approach with a literature study method and analyzes the relevance of hadith values related to covering up evil in oversharing behavior. The results of the study indicate that oversharing has the potential to conflict with Islamic ethical principles because it can reveal the ugliness of oneself or others without justifiable reasons. This title emphasizes the importance of digital literacy based on the teachings of the hadith as an ethical guide, so that social media use remains within morals and maintains mutual honor.

Abstract

The reconstruction of the historical life of Prophet Muhammad has predominantly relied on classical sīrah narratives, which are often apologetic in nature, while the Qur’an—as a contemporaneous document—has frequently been overlooked in historiographical inquiries. This article addresses three central questions: (1) How is the Prophet Muhammad represented in the Qur’an in comparison to the sīrah? (2) Are there narratives in the sīrah that contradict or diverge from the Qur’anic representation? and (3) What are the methodological implications of using the Qur’an as a critical tool in examining classical Islamic historiography? By employing a textual-comparative approach to selected key narratives in Ibn Isḥāq’s Sīrah Nabawiyyah alongside relevant Qur’anic verses, this article demonstrates that the Qur’an portrays the Prophet primarily as a human figure grappling with the challenges of his mission—distinct from the heroic and overly miraculous image often found in the sīrah. In several cases, the sīrah appears to contradict the ethos and content of the Qur’an. This article argues that the Qur’an should not be viewed merely as a supplementary source but as a legitimate and authoritative means of internal critique of the sīrah, thereby offering a new methodological pathway for studying the Prophet’s life in a more historical, critical, and balanced manner.

Abstract

Nowadays, inter-religious conflicts are prone to occur in various regions, including Medan City. Burning houses of worship, prohibiting worship, and disturbing the solemnity of other people's worship are conflicts that often occur. Tolerance and harmony are the main weapons in creating peaceful living among communities. This is what is built by the Medan City Religious Harmony Forum. The Forum for Religious Harmony (FKUB) of Medan City maintains tolerance and harmony among religious communities through educative, dialogical approaches and interfaith deliberations to build mutual understanding and resolve potential conflicts peacefully. This approach is in line with the principle of taʿāruf (knowing each other) in QS. Al-Hujurat verse 13, which according to the mufasir Sahl al-Tustari, shows that diversity is a means to understand each other and perfect ourselves, not to be contradicted. The results of research in the community show that Qur'anic values such as QS. Al-Kāfirūn: 6, QS. Al-Baqarah: 256, and QS. Al-Hujurat: 13 have been internalized in the lives of interfaith communities in Medan City. The findings from three different areas (Muslim-majority, non-Muslim, and balanced) show that tolerance has become part of the community's social culture. Thus, the Qur'an is not only a guide to faith but also a guideline to build a peaceful and harmonious plural society. This research uses descriptive qualitative methodology with a thematic interpretation approach using theological-normative perspectives.
