Abstract

Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria are commonly associated with causing acne, which is a type of Gram-positive bacteria. Chitosan nanoparticles have potential as antibacterials that can be developed into alternative therapies. The purpose of this study was to determine chitosan nanoparticles derived from crab shell waste (Portunus pelagicus) in inhibiting Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria. Disc diffusion is the method used to test antibacterial activity. The concentrations of chitosan nanoparticles used were 400 ppm, 600 ppm and 800 ppm. Tetracycline was used as positive control and 1% acetic acid as negative control. The results showed that chitosan nanoparticles had stronger antibacterial activity with increasing concentration, the strongest inhibition at a concentration of 800 ppm (14.12 ± 3.72 mm). Chitosan nanoparticles have antibacterial activity against Saphylococcus epidemidis bacteria. The higher the concentration of chitosan nanoparticles can increase its ability to inhibit bacterial growth.

Abstract

Hypertension is a disease that is the number one cause of death in the world every year. Based on measurements at ages ≥18 years, the highest hypertension prevalence data according to the province is South Kalimantan at 44.13%. One of the causes of the high prevalence of hypertension is due to low compliance in taking medication. Compliance is very necessary while undergoing hypertension treatment to reduce the impact and thus provide a good quality of life. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the level of compliance using the Hill-Bone questionnaire on the quality of life of hypertensive patients at the Puskesmas Pekauman. This study used an observational method with a cross-sectional design to determine the picture of the level of compliance with the quality of life of hypertensive patients at the Puskesmas Pekauman. Data collection using the Hill-Bone questionnaire to determine adherence level and EQ-5D-5L questionnaire to determine patient's quality of life. The results of this study showed that of the 68 respondents, 3 people (4.40%) with a moderate level of compliance had a moderate quality of life, 59 people (86.80%) with a moderate level of compliance had a high quality of life and 6 people (8.8 %) with a high level of compliance have a high quality of life, which is obtained from Kendall's tau-B test, p-value = 0.000 < 0,05. It can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between compliance and quality of life in hypertension sufferers at the Puskesmas Pekauman.

Abstract

Nowadays, the consumption of medicine suits is a problem of self-medication that occurs in the community. BPOM prohibits this medicine from being used, because the quality is not guaranteed and it can cause harm when consumed because it contains several classes of hard drugs. The high consumption of medicine suits indicates a lack of public understanding of the risks posed by medicine suits. Measuring people's perceptions of medicine suits needs to be done, one of which is by filling out a questionnaire. There is no questionnaire that measures a person's perception of suit medicine, so it is necessary to develop research instruments through validity and reliability tests of questionnaires related to measuring people's perceptions or beliefs about a treatment. This study was conducted using observational method and cross sectional time design. Where it involved 30 trial respondents while still paying attention to the inclusion criteria that had been set. The results of this study indicate that the questionnaire designed has met the minimum values of validity and reliability. Where there is only one invalid question item. While in general the resulting value of r count> r table. Regarding reliability, all items have achieved a Cronbach' alpha value of more than 0.6. This indicates that the questionnaire on community risk perception towards legitimate use of medicine suits can be used repeatedly.

Abstract

Biofilm formation by bacteria, especially the genus Staphylococcus, is a serious health problem. Various medicinal plants have been used to control the infection, but research related to the antibiofilm activity of Coleus amboinicus is still limited. Bangun-bangun leaves (C. amboinicus) are plants from the Lamiaceae family that contain secondary metabolites such as terpenoids, flavonoids, and phenolics that are thought to be responsible as antibacterial and antibiofilm. This study aims to examine the antibacterial and antibiofilm activity of C. amboinicus against S. aureus. C. amboinicus leaves were extracted using 96% ethanol. The ethanol extract was then screened for phytochemicals using Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) using several spray reagents. Antibacterial activity was analyzed using microdilution technique to obtain the value of Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC). Antibiofilm activity was analyzed using crystal violet method. The result showed that the ethanol extract of C. amboinicus leaves contained flavonoids, phenolic terpenoids, and tannins. Antibacterial assays were obtained for the MIC value of 8 mg/mL and MBC of 16 mg/mL. The ethanol extract showed biofilm inhibitory activity with an IC50 value of 2,40 mg/mL. Based on these results, C. amboinicus has potential antibacterial and antibiofilm activity to inhibit S. aureus.

Abstract

Streptococcus viridans is one of the bacteria that can cause Community-Acquired Pneumonia (CAP). CAP disease has a higher prevalence of non-alcohol-related fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Continuous increase in fat levels in the liver triggered by pneumonia can cause inflammation in the liver, it causes a rapid decline in liver function and results in increased levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and total bilirubin. The use of hepatoprotectors in conditions of impaired liver function is essential to improve liver cell regeneration and promote liver detoxification. One of the drugs and supplements that can act as a hepatoprotector is ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) and Curcuma. Here we report the use of hepatoprotector drugs in cases of Community-Acquired Pneumonia (CAP) disease due to Streptococcus viridans bacteria in patients without comorbidities with the results of liver function test examinations from the beginning of hospital admission, during treatment, until the patient is discharged. The purpose of our case report is to illustrate the effect of the combined use of UDCA and Curcuma drugs on liver injury due to Streptococcus viridans bacterial infection in order to prevent complications, morbidity, mortality and improve the quality of life of patients. Based on the case reports that we present, the combined use of UDCA and Curcuma drugs as hepatoprotectors can improve liver function with reduced parameters of AST, ALT, and total bilirubin levels.

Abstract

Paracetamol is commonly used as an analgesic and antipyretic. The toxic doses of paracetamol-induced toxic effects such as renal tubular necrosis. Creatinine (Cr) is a biochemical function to assess kidney function. In Indonesia, ginger is one of the leading plants which has health benefits, as a hepatoprotector and nephroprotector because it contains curcumin and xanthorrhizol. This research was conducted to determine the effect of ginger extract on the creatinine levels of Wistar rats induced by paracetamol. The method used an experimental pre-post-test control group design. The research subjects divided into five groups consisting of 5 rats, K1 (negative control), K2 ( paracetamol 2 g/kgBW), P1, P2, and P3 given curcuma 800 mg/kgBW, 1.600 mg/kgBW, 3.200 mg/kgBW and a toxic dose of paracetamol of 2 g/kgBW on the last three days. The data was analyzed with the Paired T-test followed by a one-way ANOVA test to see differences between groups. The results showed a significant difference between the creatinine levels of Wistar rats before and after treatment (p=0.029). Administration of graded doses of ginger to the Wistar Rat group which was induced by paracetamol, showed a significant difference compared to the control group, between groups K2 and P1 (dose 800 mg/kgBB) with a p-value=0.031. Based on the results, it can be concluded that graded doses of Temulawak can minimize damage to the kidneys of Wistar Rats due to paracetamol induction as shown by the difference in creatinine levels in the 800 mg/kgBB treatment group compared to the control group.
