Abstract

This research examines Indonesia's role in managing the South China Sea dispute using a conceptual framework of regional leadership that involves five models of leadership role impact. Indonesia's role in the South China Sea conflict is categorized as active but with limited impact. Despite Indonesia's active involvement in South China Sea conflict resolution efforts for over two decades, its impact has not reached the expected level. Indonesia has engaged in various cooperations and diplomacy that have successfully prevented open conflicts in the South China Sea region. Nevertheless, Indonesia's role in supporting internal solutions for the disputing parties remains limited due to several factors beyond Indonesia's control. These factors include the complexity of competition with China's power, low levels of trust among member states, a lack of technical cooperation in governing the South China Sea region, and the dilemmas of defense diplomacy with countries outside the region. This research highlights that Indonesia has the potential to act as a mediator and mediator in managing the South China Sea disputes, especially in non-traditional security issues such as Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (IUU Fishing). Focusing on non-traditional security diplomacy may help minimize the impact of conflicts and enhance cooperation in the South China Sea region.

Abstract

This article discusses the phenomenon of religious intolerance in Indonesia through Cak Nur's perspective of pluralism. Pluralism, which is the main framework of this article, is the basis for revealing the complexity of the challenges faced by Indonesian society in understanding and appreciating religious pluralism. Cak Nur, a contemporary Islamic thinker and intellectual, provides a rich perspective on religious diversity and the importance of tolerance in religious dialogue. This article aims to highlight a number of factors that influence the emergence of intolerance in Indonesia. In this article the author uses a qualitative method, namely exploring and studying themes that are relevant to the theme of this article. Even though this country is rich in religious diversity, some groups still experience inequality and there are still tensions between religions. Within the framework of Cak Nur's pluralism, this article presents solutions based on dialogue and education from the perspective of Islamic teachings to overcome misunderstandings about the nature of religious diversity. This analysis also includes the role of social media, especially the Instagram account @jaringangusdurian in shaping public opinion regarding religious tolerance. By understanding Cak Nur's views, this article invites readers to understand and reflect on how Indonesian society can form a shared awareness of the values of pluralism, so that acts of intolerance in the name of religion no longer occur in the archipelago. This article uses Cak Nur's inclusive approach as a key step to reduce tensions and build a solid foundation for religious discourse.

Abstract

The research aims at finding factors contributing to conflicts between groups of university students, especially that of between the students from Luwu and Bone in 2021. The conflict occurred outside of campus and widely impacted the safety of the surrounding community. The theory employed in the research is The Tree Conflict Model, Conflict Escalation Model, prejudice and stereotype model, and the national security concept. The research applies qualitative method and case study as the research design. Data collection techniques implemented are interviews and literature reviews. The result of the research indicates that conflicts between two student groups are caused by three factors; the Structural, the Manifestation, and the Dynamic factors. The Structural factor is an emotional bonding that gives people sensations of solidarity and causes them to be easily provoked. It also contributes to organizational mishandling and ineffective punishment. In the Manifestation factor, it is the group solidarity that significantly contributes to the conflict. Lastly, it is the Dynamic factor that is reflected in the action of retaliation. More importantly, the impact of the conflict can excess and causes disruption against communal and social safety. In this regard not only is the government responsible for avoiding external threats but it is also mandated for the safety of people in their daily life.

Abstract

West Kalimantan is a province in Indonesia that is directly adjacent to Sarawak, Malaysia. Electrical energy in West Kalimantan is not fulfilled because the source of electricity in West Kalimantan still relies on diesel which is expensive and cannot last all day, depending on the supply of fuel. Meanwhile, Sarawak has quite a large supply of energy coming from hydropower plants. To overcome the gap in those regions, ASEAN has made the West Kalimantan and Sarawak as one of the ASEAN Power Grid projects which connects certain areas in two different countries to share electricity supply. The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of the cooperation between West Kalimantan and Sarawak electricity interconnection in meeting the electricity demand in the West Kalimantan region. In this research, the authors used qualitative methods by reviewing the literature. As the results of this study, the cross-border electricity interconnection cooperation between West Kalimantan and Sarawak is quite effective. By importing electricity from Sarawak the demand for electrical energy-especially in the main cities of West Kalimantan, can be fulfilled. So those two areas have the advantage where West Kalimantan is able to meet the electricity needs and Sarawak gets a profit margin by selling its electricity.
