Abstract

This study explores the role of Islamic values in shaping a morally upright generation, emphasizing the integration of character education within family, school, and community settings. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive approach through library research, this study examines various scholarly sources, including the Qur'an, Hadith, academic books, journal articles, and official documents. Data were analyzed using content analysis to assess the conceptual foundations of Islamic values, strategies for character formation, and their practical applications in social life. The findings reveal that Islamic values play a crucial role in fostering individuals with strong integrity, responsibility, and high moral awareness. Islam provides a balanced approach between encouragement (bashiran) and warning (nazhiran), shaping individuals' consciousness of the consequences of their actions. The study further highlights that character education based on Islamic teachings is highly effective in producing individuals who are not only intellectually capable but also spiritually resilient. As contemporary society faces increasing moral challenges due to globalization and technological advancements, this research underscores the relevance of Islamic character education in addressing these issues. The study concludes that through strong collaboration between families, educational institutions, and society, Islamic values can be effectively implemented to cultivate a generation that is morally grounded and contributes to a harmonious society. The significance of this research lies in its comprehensive analysis of Islamic character education and its practical recommendations for integrating Islamic principles into modern education systems.

Abstract

The term wasaṭiyyah comes from the sentence "ummatan wasaṭan" in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 143, which reflects the character of fair and best Muslims. This concept has developed into religious moderation, emphasizing the values of justice and balance. In Indonesia, the understanding of religious moderation is often debated, with pros and cons related to the meaning of wasaṭiyyah and indicators of moderation that are considered forced. Sayyid Qutb, in Tafsir Fī Ẓilāl Al-Qur'ān, provides a comprehensive interpretation of the verse. This study uses a qualitative method with a comparative analytical approach, relying on data from the Tafsir book and other secondary sources. The analysis was carried out with a hermeneutic approach to understand the context of the verse. The results of the study show six indicators of wasaṭiyyah, according to Sayyid Qutb, including aqidah, thought, law, social, place, and time. This concept is relevant to religious moderation in Indonesia, especially in national commitment.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the historical development of Islam as a minority religion in Myanmar, focusing on the role of the Muslim community, which has existed since the 9th century through maritime trade routes. The method employed is a literature study by collecting relevant books and academic writings. The research follows four steps: heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The findings reveal that Islam was introduced to Myanmar by Arab, Persian, and Bengali traders who settled in the Arakan coastal region (now Rakhine State). The Muslim community comprises various ethnic groups, including Bamar, Kamein, Panthay, Malay, and Rohingya. The historical relationship between the Arakan Kingdom and the Bengal Sultanate in the 15th century significantly strengthened Islamic influence in the region and shaped the Rohingya identity as a community with deep cultural and historical roots. Although the Muslim population assimilated into local culture, they faced escalating challenges post-Myanmar’s independence in 1948 due to restrictive citizenship laws. The situation deteriorated with acts of violence in 2012 and 2017, leading to a humanitarian crisis as thousands of Rohingya sought refuge in Bangladesh. This research contributes a historical perspective on the social and political dynamics influencing Myanmar’s Muslim minority and highlights the complexities of the Rohingya crisis.

Abstract

Religious education plays an important role in shaping moral values that are relevant to the challenges of the increasingly complex modern world. This study aims to compare the thoughts of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, Aminah Wadud, and Reinhold Niebuhr regarding religious education, as well as explore their different perspectives that reflect the richness of their respective theological traditions. Using a qualitative approach and literature study method, this study analyzes the main works of the three figures, including Heschel's Man Is Not Alone, Wadud's Qur'an and Woman, and Niebuhr's The Nature and Destiny of Man, as well as various other relevant sources. The results of the study show that although there are similar views on the importance of religious education that prioritizes morality and social responsibility, these three thinkers have different approaches. Heschel emphasized social morality as an integral part of religious education, Wadud advocated women's empowerment and gender equality, while Niebuhr taught the importance of compromise and adaptation to the complexities of the social world. This research contributes to the development of religious education that is more inclusive and relevant to the social context, as well as enriching interfaith dialogue in a diverse global society.

Abstract

Compassion plays a crucial role in human life, particularly in education, where it helps shape positive character traits in children and enhances their altruistic behavior. This study aims to analyze Karen Armstrong's perspective on compassion as a core competency for educators in Islamic education. A qualitative research method with a descriptive-analytical approach was employed. The data sources include the primary source, Karen Armstrong's book Compassion: 12 Steps to a More Compassionate Life, and secondary sources such as relevant documents, scholarly articles, and other data. The research procedure was carried out in three steps: reviewing relevant references, collecting necessary references, and analyzing them according to the research objectives. The findings reveal that compassion, according to Armstrong, is the ability to place oneself in another person's position, to feel their suffering as if it were one's own, and to voluntarily engage in alleviating that suffering. In the context of Islamic education, compassion is a competency that every educator should possess. Educators who embody and implement compassion in their teaching activities can create a positive educational environment and foster constructive communication, thereby supporting the optimal development of children's character.

Abstract

Devotion in the Catholic faith is a form of loyalty and closeness to God through the intercession of the saints. Over time, some traditional forms of devotion have seen a decline in followers, as they are considered too formal and lacking in personal spiritual experiences. Amid this situation, in recent years, a form of devotion known as the Devotion to Mary, Untier of Knots, has gained recognition among the faithful. This devotion is characterized by the depiction of the Virgin Mary as a loving mother who helps people unravel the knots of life's problems. This research aims to revisit and explore the meaning of devotion in the Catholic faith, specifically examine the Devotion to Mary, Untier of Knots, and identify its potential in helping the faithful experience a conversion of heart. Using a literature review and qualitative methods, this study analyzes the theological foundation of this devotion and its relevance in the lives of Catholics, particularly in Indonesia. The results indicate that the Devotion to Mary, Untier of Knots, holds profound spiritual appeal, especially in providing peace, hope, and encouragement for the faithful to undergo a conversion of heart. This devotion offers a more personal and contextual religious experience, helping believers face life's challenges with greater faith and hope.

Abstract

Tafsir, in its dynamics, does not only function as a medium for studying Allah's verses. There has been a shift in the function of interpretation to become a field for cultivating the interests of individuals, groups and even state governments. This shift in function occurs because tafsir has experienced a development in meaning; previously, tafsir had to be written by someone who met the requirements of a mufassir, but this was not strictly adhered to by tafsir writers from Indonesia. Through this article, various interests in various Indonesian interpretations are discussed, starting from the strengthening of ideology, politics by the government, highlighting communities, even interpretations being used as a means to criticize government policies, and so on. There are various forms of tafsir studied, ranging from the Al-Qur'an Encyclopedia, local language tafsir, to government-published translations of the Qur'an. Thus, interpretations that emerge from the Indonesian context are not only viewed as normative interpretations, but also as interpretations of interests or ideological interpretations.

Abstract

Indonesian society is renowned for its rich diversity of religious traditions, including local beliefs that persist to this day. One such tradition is the Parmalim Religion, which originates from the Batak tribe in North Sumatra. This religion, also known as Ugamo Malim, is a belief system that regulates the spiritual relationship between humans and the spirit world, with Debata Mulajadi Na Bolon as God who created the universe. Religious practices in the Parmalim Religion involve various rituals and ceremonies that reflect the depth of humans' relationship with God and the natural environment, such as birth, marriage, and death rituals, as well as annual ceremonies related to the harvest season and the Batak New Year. This religion encompasses moral values such as solidarity, justice, and togetherness, which guide the daily lives of its adherents. This research uses a literature-based qualitative approach to examine Parmalim's religious practices, utilizing William James' theory of religious experience and Emile Durkheim's theory of religious practice. This study aims to provide a deeper understanding of how the Parmalim Religion maintains the spiritual and cultural identity of the Batak people and its contribution to the diversity of religious practices in Indonesia. Through an analysis of written sources, it is hoped that this research will enrich our understanding of local beliefs and their preservation amidst current developments.

Abstract

This article analyzes the dynamics of the socio-religious movement of the Salafiyah Islamic Boarding School (Majelis Pesantren Salafiyah--MPS) in Banten in fighting for institutional recognition. Using the perspective of resource mobilization theory and framing analysis, this research explores the forms of resistance and negotiation carried out by MPS in response to marginalization by government policy. Research findings show that MPS mobilizes cultural resources based on religious values and the identity of Salafiyah Islamic boarding schools as a strategy to fight against discrimination in educational policies. Through the formation of formal organizations, collective action, and policy advocacy, MPS succeeded in influencing the birth of Regional Regulation No. 7 of 2012 concerning the Implementation of Education in Banten, which includes Salafiyah Islamic boarding schools within the framework of recognized educational institutions. This research contributes to an understanding of how Islamic boarding school-based religious social movements strive for institutional recognition through a combination of cultural resistance and political negotiation strategies.
