Abstract

Indonesia, with its majority archipelago, faces serious challenges in sanitation and waste management, especially in coastal areas. Low public awareness, the habit of dumping waste into the sea, and limited infrastructure exacerbate environmental conditions and have an impact on public health. This community service activity aims to evaluate the effect of 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) concept education on changes in waste management behavior in Dendun Village, Bintan Regency. Education was conducted interactively using PowerPoint and video media, accompanied by composting and ecobricking practices as simple solutions that are applicable to coastal communities. Evaluation was conducted through pre-test and post-test using questionnaires to 30 respondents. Results showed a significant increase in community knowledge, from 56.7% (poor category) to 80% (good), and behavior change from 46.7% (poor) to 83.3% (good). Statistical tests showed p values <0.05 in all variables, which means that there is a significant effect of education on improving knowledge, behavior, skills, and support for sanitation management. Based on the results described, it can be concluded that 3R education is effective in increasing awareness and waste management practices at the community level. This program is expected to be a model for empowering coastal communities in an effort to preserve the environment and improve health status.

Abstract

This community service program aims to establish a Safety Farming Village in Pudak Village, Kumpeh Ulu District, Muaro Jambi Regency, as an effort to improve occupational safety and health (K3) for farmers. Through outreach, training and the establishment of Occupational Health Effort Posts (UKK), farmers are expected to be able to apply K3 principles in farming activities, especially in handling pesticides. The results of the program show an increase in farmers' knowledge and awareness about the importance of work safety, as evidenced by a decrease in the incidence of work accidents and an increase in the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Apart from that, the establishment of work SOPs and rinse storage houses provides safer facilities for farmers. This program also produces First Aid for Accidents (P3K) training which helps farmers deal with work injuries more swiftly and effectively. This success was supported by partnerships between educational institutions, village stakeholders and farmers, which significantly increased safety awareness and strengthened the sustainability of safe agricultural practices. This program has not only succeeded in improving the quality of life and productivity of farmers, but has also become a model for other villages in implementing Safety Farming.

Abstract

Dental caries in children remains a significant public health problem in Indonesia, including in Jambi City. Based on data from the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey, the prevalence of caries in school-aged children reached over 40%, impacting quality of life, academic achievement, and the economic burden on families. Low knowledge and inappropriate tooth-brushing behavior are the main factors contributing to the high incidence of caries. The objective of this community service is to improve students' dental health knowledge and behavior, and to implement a professional collective toothbrushing program in elementary schools. This activity consisted of five stages: coordination with partners, dental health education, collective toothbrushing practice, mentoring, monitoring, and evaluation. The community service activity successfully improved children's knowledge about dental health and brushing skills.

Abstract

Receptive mapping is a crucial step in supporting policymakers in determining intervention priorities and formulating effective strategies in malaria control programs. Technical training on creating malaria receptive maps using the open-source application Quantum GIS (QGIS) was conducted for five staff members of the Disease Prevention and Control Division (P2P) at the Batang Hari District Health Office. The training aimed to improve participants' knowledge and skills in creating malaria receptive maps for malaria control. The training used simulation and hands-on methods, so that participants had knowledge and practical experience in map-making. Pre- and post-training evaluations were conducted using questionnaires and work products in the form of malaria receptive maps. Pre-test results showed that 60% of staff had good knowledge and practical skills in receptive mapping, while 40% showed poor understanding. After the training, all participants (100%) showed good knowledge and were able to make malaria receptive maps independently. Awareness of the importance of malaria control from the vector aspect is still uneven and needs attention in every region, especially in areas that have achieved low malaria endemicity or even free of malaria. Increased malaria mapping capacity is expected to contribute to better surveillance and control efforts at the Batang Hari Health Office.

Abstract

Congenital Hypothyroidism is a health disorder caused by a deficiency of thyroid hormones starting from the womb, which can lead to growth issues, mental retardation, and disabilities. The prevention of such complications is carried out through Congenital Hypothyroidism Screening (SHK). The SHK program is a preventive initiative aimed at preventing developmental disorders in children. Although it has not yet reached its full potential, the SHK program has been implemented in various regions across Indonesia. Padang City, West Sumatra, has implemented the SHK program in several hospitals as a strategic effort for the early detection of thyroid disorders. Based on the results of thyroid function screening at RSI Siti Rahmah Padang in 2023, it was found that 99.3% of 150 newborns had euthyroid TSH levels, while 0.7% experienced hypothyroidism. The objective of this community service project is to increase public knowledge regarding the Congenital Hypothyroidism Screening (SHK) program. The method used in this activity involved educational sessions followed by a pre-test and post-test. The pre-test results showed a mean score of 4.13, with a range of 2 to 7. Meanwhile, the mean score increased in the post-test to 8.37, with a range of 6 to 9. This indicates a significant increase in public knowledge regarding the SHK program among the community in Lambung Bukit Village, Pauh District, Padang City.
