Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a long term metabolic disease that may trigger various complications, including diabetic ulcers. These ulcers are highly vulnerable to bacterial infection, especially by Staphylococcus aureus, which can delay wound healing and worsen the patient’s condition. This study was conducted to determine the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of bidara leaves (Ziziphus mauritiana L.) against Staphylococcus aureus isolated from diabetic ulcer wounds. The research employed an experimental laboratory design using the well diffusion technique on Mueller Hinton Agar media. Bidara leaf extract was tested at concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 15%. Chloramphenicol was applied as the positive control, while DMSO and distilled water were used as negative and neutral controls. Antibacterial effectiveness was assessed based on the diameter of the inhibition zone formed around each well. The findings demonstrated that the ethanol extract of bidara leaves was able to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus at all tested concentrations. The strongest inhibitory effect was observed at the 15% concentration. Statistical evaluation using one way ANOVA revealed a significant difference between treatment groups (p<0.05). The antibacterial activity is thought to be associated with the presence of bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and saponins, which may interfere with bacterial cell function and growth. In summary, ethanol extract of bidara leaves shows promising potential as a natural antibacterial agent against Staphylococcus aureus isolated from diabetic ulcers.

Abstract

Climate change poses a significant challenge to the sustainability of palm oil production in Indonesia through changes in rainfall and temperature patterns. This study aims to analyze changes in climate variability and trends in palm oil productivity across various climate zones in Indonesia from 1990 to 2023. The study area encompasses palm oil-producing provinces, grouped into equatorial and monsoon zones based on the BMKG classification. Climate data, including minimum, maximum, and average temperatures, and rainfall, were obtained from NASA Power, while palm oil productivity data were obtained from the Agricultural Statistics Database. The analysis used the Mann-Kendall and Sen's Slope tests to identify the direction and magnitude of change trends, and the Mann-Whitney test to compare climate variability across observation periods. The results show an increasing trend in rainfall and temperature across the study area, indicating wetting and warming phenomena. The equatorial zone has more stable agroclimatic conditions and higher productivity than the monsoon zone. Conversely, the monsoon region experiences thermal stress and higher rainfall fluctuations, potentially reducing productivity. These findings demonstrate the importance of climate adaptation strategies based on agroclimatic zone characteristics to maintain the sustainability of palm oil production in Indonesia.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by elevated blood glucose levels due to impaired insulin secretion or function. If left uncontrolled, this disease can lead to serious complications affecting vital organs. According to the 2023 Indonesian Diabetes Association (SKI), the prevalence of diabetes in Indonesia reached 1.7%, and in Aceh it was 1.6%. Aceh Besar Regency recorded 8,517 cases, with Ingin Jaya District ranking second with 785 cases. Widespread unhealthy behaviors increase the risk of complications. This study aims to identify factors influencing the incidence of diabetes mellitus complications, including income, family support, knowledge, attitudes, diet, physical activity, foot care, medication adherence, and blood sugar monitoring. The study used a quantitative approach with a case-control design. The population consisted of 39 individuals, with a total sampling technique, resulting in 78 respondents. The study was conducted from July 6–14, 2025, using a standardized questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted using univariate, bivariate, and multivariate methods using the chi-square test and binary logistic regression. The study results showed that physical activity (p=0.003; OR=10.360) and blood sugar monitoring (p=0.036; OR=9.806) influenced diabetes complications. Multivariate analysis confirmed these findings, while other variables showed no significant effect. It is recommended that health agencies utilize these results to strengthen health promotion, routine screening, risk factor monitoring, and improve public education on diabetes mellitus prevention and management.

Abstract

Pregnant women with Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) continue to be a public health concern in Indonesia. According to the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (SKI), 16.9% of pregnant women had CED, which raises their risk of anemia, impaired fetal growth, and low birth weight. One strategy to deal with this problem is by creating functional foods based on local ingredients that are nutritious and acceptable. The aim of this investigation was to examine the macronutrient content and acceptability of mackerel fish meatballs substituted with mung bean flour and enriched with carrots and spinach as a healthy substitute food for expectant mothers with CED. This study used a pre-experimen design with a post-test design consisting of three formulations: F1 (80:20), F2 (50:50), and F3 (20:80). Acceptability testing was conducted on 40 semi-trained panelists using a hedonic test on color, aroma, texture, and taste, and examined using the Kruskal–Wallis test. There were no discernible variations in the outcomes (p>0.05), although F3 was the most preferred formulation. Macronutrient analysis showed that the selected formula contained 116.9 kcal of energy, 10.25% protein, 0.18% fat, and 18.57% carbohydrates. This product has the potential as a functional food to support nutritional improvement in pregnant women with CED.

Abstract

Candida albicans is a fungal microorganism that can cause candidiasis and requires the development of alternative therapies derived from natural products. Bitter leaf (Tithonia diversifolia) contains bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, and tannins that have potential antifungal activity. This study aimed to formulate and evaluate a nanogel containing ethanol extract of Tithonia diversifolia leaves and to assess its antifungal activity against Candida albicans. The extract was obtained through maceration using 70% ethanol and formulated into nanogels using a modified emulsification-diffusion method at concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 15%. The formulations were evaluated for organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, spreadability, viscosity, particle size, and antifungal activity using the agar well diffusion method. The results showed that all nanogel formulations exhibited good physical characteristics and met the requirements for topical application. Particle size analysis revealed sizes ranging from 755.75 to 847.29 nm, indicating that all formulations met the criteria for nanoparticulate systems. All formulations demonstrated inhibitory activity against the growth of Candida albicans, with inhibition tending to increase as the extract concentration increased. The incorporation of bitter leaf extract into a nanogel system may improve the stability and delivery of bioactive compounds compared with conventional formulations. Therefore, the ethanol extract nanogel of Tithonia diversifolia leaves has the potential to be developed as a natural-based topical antifungal formulation.

Abstract

Ulee Lheue Port is a major port in Banda Aceh with high human activity, potentially posing environmental health risks if clean water quality and sanitation are not properly managed. The port serves not only as a transit point but also as a public space with intensive interaction between workers and service users. This study aims to assess clean water quality based on physical and chemical parameters, water availability, environmental conditions, and the sanitation adequacy of public facilities. This study used an observational method with a descriptive design. Data collection was conducted through direct observation, water quality measurements, and environmental sanitation and hygiene assessments. Samples were taken at several strategic points: the right lobby restroom, the left lobby restroom, the canteen restroom, and the prayer room. Parameters analyzed included physical aspects (odor, taste, color, turbidity), chemical aspects (pH), clean water availability, fly density, and the sanitation adequacy of public facilities. The results showed that the physical and chemical quality of the water generally met quality standards, with turbidity ranging from 0.10 to 0.55 NTU and a pH of 7, well within the standard range of 6.5 to 8.5. However, all samples did not meet taste standards, as they were identified as bitter and sweet. Clean water availability reached 100%, sourced from drilled wells. The highest fly densities were found in canteens and polling stations (TPS). It was concluded that water quality was relatively good, but sanitation in public facilities remained at risk, necessitating continuous improvement in vector management and control.

Abstract

This research aims to redesign the design of raw material storage rooms to improve efficiency in material storage and retrieval at PT. Bonecom Tricom. The problems found include limited storage space capacity for raw materials which causes the utilization of warehouse areas to be less than optimal, storage layouts that have not been effectively organized so as to hinder the process of finding and retrieving materials, and the use of forklifts that interfere with the smooth flow of materials. This condition results in an increase in material transfer distance, longer handling time, and decreased warehouse operational efficiency. The method applied in this study is descriptive, with data collection techniques through direct observation, interviews, and secondary data documentation studies. The data collected includes the arrangement of existing facilities, the distance between work areas, the movement of raw materials, and the size and location of each facility. In the layout redesign, the Fixed Storage method was applied, which was based on the analysis of the throughput ratio as well as the space requirements for each product. At the end of this study, it is hoped that it can provide suggestions for improvements to the layout system that will optimize the use of space and smooth the flow of materials in the warehouse.
