Jurnal Gramatika: Jurnal Penelitian Pendidikan Bahasa dan Sastra Indonesia (2442-8485) & (2460-6316), well-known as GRAMATIKA, is an international forum for original research focused on identities as local contexts, like an identity in linguistics, identity in literature, and identity in language education in global and local contexts, especially in Indonesia. These may include but are not limited to various fields, such as we are interested in interdisciplinary studies examining how issues of linguistics, literature, and education in language influence individual and community identities. In order to publish in GRAMATIKA, a study must have an overview of previous research or theoretical concepts that are packaged to justify the novelty/uniqueness of this study and central focus on local, foreign, minority, heritage, or indigenous languages (or non-standard dialects) and their intersection with either identity and/or education in language, linguistics and literature. We welcome a variety of topics, theoretical orientations, and methodological approaches (both qualitative and quantitative). Abstract

The study was conducted to analyze the effect of ABA therapy on the language skills of autistic children: a psycholinguistic review. The cause of language disorders in autistic children is that there are nervous system disorders in the brain. Developmental disorders require further treatment in order to improve children's language skills. The method used was pre-experiment with one group pre-test and posttest design with statistical tests such as the Wilcoxon test. Analysis techniques using ABC (Antecedent, Behavior, Consequence) models with parameters of compliance, imitation skills, and establishing eye contact. The research was conducted in one of the training places for children with special needs in the city of Pekan Baru. The child population of 15 autistic children with eight children was sampled for language disorders. The development of the application of ABA therapy is carried out for three months. The results of the Wilcoxon sign rank test on the pre-test and posttest showed a significant increase in bye-bye, applause, spinning, and jumping activities with a significance value of 0.045. ABA therapy in autistic children is one of the behavioral therapies that focuses on handling the situation when the child is able to respond correctly. Through the application of ABA therapy, children are able to respond according to the instructions given by the therapist.

Abstract

: In pursuit of bolstering environmental consciousness, the integration of Eco-linguistic themes into English for Specific Purposes (ESP) classes emerges as a crucial pedagogical strategy. This study aims to explore the potential merits of embedding ESP within environmental education curricula, particularly in Higher Schools of Technology (HST), with a specific focus on augmenting students' comprehension of intricate ecological concepts and nurturing a new cadre of environmentally aware professionals. Given the imperative for effective interdisciplinary communication in tackling environmental issues, ESP, tailored to the language needs of environmental science, policy, and conservation, offers promise in furnishing students with the specialized language proficiency essential for precise communication within the field. The research endeavors to assess the extent to which ESP aids HST students in grasping complex ecological concepts that often necessitate technical terminology and nuanced language usage. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study combines qualitative scrutiny of curriculum design and instructional methodologies with quantitative evaluation of students' language proficiency and comprehension of ecological principles. Educational institutions integrating ESP into their environmental education programs will be chosen as case studies. Interviews with educators and students, coupled with language assessment data, will furnish insights into the efficacy of ESP in enhancing language skills and fostering deeper comprehension of environmental content. Anticipated outcomes encompass a deeper understanding of ESP's impact on students' language proficiency and ecological acumen, as well as the identification of effective strategies for integrating ESP into environmental education. This research seeks to offer guidance to educators and curriculum developers endeavoring to bolster students' language skills and environmental literacy. Ultimately, by elucidating the advantages of incorporating ESP, this study contributes to ongoing discussions on pedagogical approaches that bridge the chasm between language education and environmental sciences. By highlighting the benefits of ESP integration, this research holds implications for shaping the curricula of environmental education programs and nurturing a cohort of professionals adept at effective communication, collaboration, and addressing the pressing environmental challenges of our era.

Abstract

The speech of Indonesian stakeholders (SIS) is ideal for not only discourse analysis but also as an instance of language employed for systemic functional linguistics (SFL). According to the SFL perspective, the use of morphosyntax and morphosemantics features in the speech of the Indonesian ministry of state secretariat is an expression of informational content that has been incorporated into the structure of language. The objective of this study was to describe the informative content in the form of a topical theme in the SIS practices conducted by the Indonesian minister of state secretariat (MSS) in 2019–2024. The data for this study consisted of transcribed utterances taken from speeches by MSS. The MSS official broadcasting platform and other relevant YouTube channels were the data providers. Documentation, transcription, and comprehensive textual fragmentation techniques were used to collect and analyze the data. This analysis demonstrates that, with relation to the SFL, practically all of the studied MSS utterances contain topical theme. The topical theme has been organized using phrases and sentences. Additionally, the topical theme has served as both a standalone theme and a component of multiple themes. This study proposal pertains to a more in-depth examination of the interrelationships between topical theme and other sorts of theme or rheme.

Abstract

We propose a Mutual Language Policy to mediate shared interests between Chinese and indigenous workers in minimalizing frictions related to language attitudes, socio-cultural attitudes, ideologies and identities. So far, language policy has only sided with indigenous interests initiated by the government and has not involved foreign interests. By using multiple case study, we analyzed language attitudes, socio-cultural attitudes, as well as ideologies and identities of Chinese and indigenous workers to understand the frictions that occurred. We found that the language attitude of the Chinese workers was considered positive while the dominant use of Mandarin was only caused by the lack of mastery of both Indonesian and English. Next, the socio-cultural attitude of Chinese workers that seemed exclusive was basically caused by two main things, firstly, their concern about counterculture and contra behavior towards indigenous people.Secondly, the social class in employment context. Finally, the defense of the ideology and identity of the indigenous community seemed so strong was because of the collective defense system. Shared interests among them in a mutual language policy concept are also discussed.

Abstract

The prevalence of taboo language among adolescents, both at home and in school settings, is undeniable. Often, adolescents resort to using taboo words not only in moments of anger but also in non-angry contexts. This study endeavors to elucidate the patterns of taboo language usage among adolescents residing in the coastal area of Cirebon, taking into account the influence of parental education. Conducted at SMAN 1 Suranenggala and SMKN 1 Gunungjati, North Cirebon, the research involved a total sample of 195 respondents selected through cluster random sampling techniques. Findings indicate that a majority of adolescent boys and girls employ Javanese language at home, with taboo language predominantly falling within the low category of usage. Moreover, male adolescents exhibit a higher propensity for taboo language usage compared to their female counterparts, particularly in interactions with friends. Interestingly, the study discerns no significant correlation between the use of taboo language and parental education levels. Notably, taboo language predominantly revolves around animal-related terms, including dogs and their synonyms, pigs, and monkeys. Ultimately, the research underscores that the utilization of taboo language is contingent upon various factors such as situational contexts, environments, and conversational partners.

Abstract

The emerging branch of linguistics known as ‘Ecolinguistics’ views language as an integral part of the ecological environment and aims to study the relationship between language and the environment. As an emerging discipline in linguistic research, ecolinguistics provides a new perspective on language research from an ecological point of view. The study of a language under the framework of ecolinguistics involves not only studying the language itself, but also the environment in which the language is located and the interrelationship between language and environment. The advantages of Hindi as the lingua franca in Bihar, one of the Indian states, have been highlighted, and people in many remote regions have switched to the powerful Hindi language, and many regional languages have become vulnerable. Bihar has been prone to multiple natural disasters which include flood, earthquake, drought, cyclonic storms, and lightening of high severity. For instance, 73.63% of the geographical area of North Bihar is prone to floods. Thus, these natural factors may wipe out a whole people leading to the creation of linguistic ecological crisis of their native languages. In addition to this, social factor also plays role wherein the spread and popularity of the Internet has strengthened the spread of Hindi as a common language in Bihar. Thus, the present paper studies the ecological languages of language vulnerability from the perspectives of ecolinguistics. The languages of Bihar such as ‘Angika’ and ‘Bajjika’ are facing the linguistic situation of vulnerability. Various factors lead to their present linguistic situation and therefore, the present paper attempts to study these languages from the ecological linguistic perspective. It also presents the strategies for preserving these ‘so-labelled’ vulnerable codes as the reduced linguistic diversity is as serious as the harm caused by reduced biodiversity.

Abstract

This research examines the depiction of Gajah Mada's political framework in literary works, which aims to dissect concepts such as power dynamics, personal interests, policy formulation, and cultural elements, as well as exploring the sharpness of Gajah Mada's leadership. The method used by Alan Swingewood's literary sociology.Data collection and data analysis in this research were carried out by means of literature study, namely first, reading the Gajah Mada novel which was used as the object of study intensively and critically; second, identifying data related to aspects of Gajah Mada's political system; third, inventory or record all identification data. The result of this research is that Gajah Mada's political power, represented as a wise and charismatic leader, highlights Indonesia's need for a democratic, transparent and accountable political system, as well as strengthening national unity and integrity. Gajah Mada's political interests, such as state stability, deconcentration of power, and sustainable development, can be adapted as political alternatives by strengthening checks and balances, independent control institutions, government transparency, community participation, and eradicating corruption. Gajah Mada's political policies succeeded in uniting the archipelago under Majapahit, providing inspiration for Indonesia to improve economic policies, develop justice and eradicate corruption. Gajah Mada's political culture, which involves the mandate of officials, deliberation, and attention to the welfare of the people, can be a basis for strengthening national unity and integrity as well as increasing national awareness through education.

Abstract

The characters representing couples and the familial system portrayed in Mochtar Lubis's novel "Senja di Jakarta" exhibit forms of family dysfunction that should ideally be characterized by a sense of comfort and security. This is demonstrated through the relationships constructed by the characters within various households. As this issue evolves, the researcher became interested in conducting a study with the hope that future generations could better understand the significance of family and how familial roles can be appropriately and effectively fulfilled. The families depicted through the characters in the novel face various issues that serve as primary factors contributing to family dysfunction. Among these primary factors are a lack of communication, minimal understanding and care among family members, and the normalization of prioritizing one's own thoughts over those of others. This research examines the forms of family dysfunction in Mochtar Lubis's novel "Senja di Jakarta," utilizing a literary sociology approach by employing William J. Goode's family sociology theory. Forms of dysfunction are influenced by significant changes resulting from the emergence of new values within a family; the breakdown of relationships is considered a social issue for individuals or couples, leading to feelings of fear and apprehension towards marriage. The concept of a fragmented family portrays a form of familial disunity and emotional unsupportiveness among its members. Additionally, the absence of one partner due to unwanted circumstances and the failure of undesired significant roles represent two forms of family dysfunction that occur beyond control and directly impact family sustainability. This research is expected to contribute significantly to a deeper understanding of familial issues, particularly within literary works such as novels. A qualitative method was employed in this study, emphasizing textual facts that were subsequently examined, understood, categorized, and analyzed based on forms of family dysfunction.

Abstract

Indonesian language has an important role in conveying information clearly to the public and has a significant impact on strengthening national identity. This research is important because it provides insight into the extent to which online media journalists' competence in using Indonesian language can support efforts to strengthen national identity. This research aims to evaluate the competence of online media journalists in Riau in producing news using Indonesian. Researchers used a qualitative approach by conducting in-depth interviews with experienced journalists from various online media in Riau. Data was collected and analyzed to understand the practice of using Indonesian in the entire news writing process, from information search to final writing. The research results show that there is still a lack of optimization of the use of Indonesian language in writing online media news. Journalists tend to use regional languages in data collection in an effort to facilitate the operational stage. Meanwhile, in writing, an informal language style that is in line with everyday language is preferred to attract the attention of readers. These findings illustrate the role of Indonesian language in the context of strengthening national identity and highlight the need to increase the language competence of journalists in Riau.
