Abstract

The motivation behind language learning, particularly in English as a Foreign Language (EFL), has garnered significant attention in China's second language acquisition landscape as a minority language. While extensive research has been conducted over the last few decades exploring motivation factors across various educational stages, such as early childhood, primary, junior high, and high school education, there remains a notable gap concerning the motivation of Chinese learners in high school, particularly in the realm of critical reading. This study addresses this gap through a qualitative case study, aiming to uncover the impact of learning experiences on the motivation of three Chinese ethnic students in senior high school. These students navigate a complex linguistic landscape, proficient in their mother tongue, Mandarin, and concurrently learning English as a foreign language. The intricacies of their social and cultural exposure contribute to the complexity of their English learning journey. Semi-structured interviews with the three participants shed light on the intricacies of their English learning motivation, revealing a predominant focus on examination-driven incentives. The study identifies significant influencers on motivation, including teachers' teaching styles, peers' attitudes toward English, and the overall learning atmosphere in the class. These findings affect educational policy-making and English instruction, particularly in Chinese ethnic regions. With the multifaceted nature of motivation in these specific contexts, educators and policymakers can tailor strategies that address the unique challenges faced by Chinese ethnic learners in high school, emphasizing the importance of a holistic and supportive language learning environment.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the types and functions of silence in Ganjar Pranowo's speech on the Becoming Human YouTube channel, focusing on the role of silence in digital communication. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach to identify two main types of silence: quiet and filled. The research results show that intentional silence is used for several pragmatic purposes, including regulating breathing, providing emphasis, segmenting grammatical units, and conveying emotional expressions. In contrast, unintentional silence occurs due to the speaker's mental processes in planning and producing speech, such as careful word selection and spontaneous correction of speech errors. This research has important implications for Indonesian language learning, especially speaking and listening skills. Understanding the use of comfort can help students organize the flow of communication and reduce the stress of public speaking. Additionally, silence can be taught as an effective communication strategy in professional and digital contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of the Group-Discovery Learning Model on students’ communicative identity and the development of essential 21st-century skills, including critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication. This model is rooted in constructivist principles and encourages active learning through peer interaction, problem-solving tasks, and self-directed inquiry. Employing a quasi-experimental design, data were collected from 104 high school students across two schools in Padang who participated in either experimental or control classes. A validated performance-based assessment instrument was used to measure student outcomes across multiple dimensions of skill development. The results revealed significant improvements in 21st-century skills among students in the experimental group, with average post-treatment scores of 84.3 and 84.8, indicating a positive effect of the model. The normalized gain (N-Gain) scores showed medium effects (0.51 and 0.45), demonstrating measurable progress over four sessions. No significant interaction was found between the school category and the model's effectiveness, suggesting its potential adaptability across diverse educational settings. These findings support the Group-Discovery Learning Model as an effective approach for enhancing both cognitive and social competencies essential for modern learners. Despite these positive outcomes, challenges remain, particularly in developing higher-order critical thinking skills such as evaluating peer arguments and synthesizing complex ideas. This suggests that while the model fosters collaborative learning and engagement, additional scaffolding may be required to strengthen analytical reasoning. The study recommends integrating digital tools into the model to enrich collaborative learning experiences and reinforce students’ evolving communicative identities in contemporary language education.

Abstract

The old text of Tambo Surambi Alam Sungai Pagu constitutes a significant cultural heritage of the Minangkabau people. This manuscript chronicles the history of the Minangkabau Rajodom, which was composed initially by hand before its publication. To save the text against deterioration and natural calamities, such as fire and flood, preservation efforts, including digitalization, are essential. Digitalization converts media from printed, audio, or video formats to establish digital document repositories. Digitalization necessitates computers, scanners, operators, media, sources, and software. This study seeks to elucidate the procedure of translating the SASP manuscript from Arabic-Malay script to Latin script utilizing the Philology approach and delineate the process of web-based digitalization of the SASP manuscript. Two research methodologies exist: the Philological research method and the digitalization approach. The philological approach encompasses the processes of transliteration or transcription. The digitization of old SASP texts involves the building of software architecture applications. The digitization of this information system employs the PhoneGap operating system. From the data analysis, the subsequent conclusions can be derived. Initially, according to Philological research, namely the translation of the SASP manuscript, there are terms inscribed in Arabic alongside the utilization of Malay, Minangkabau, and antique vocabulary. The text serves a societal purpose as a source of information regarding the genealogy of the Pagaruyung Rajodom's history. Secondly, drawing from digitalization research utilizing the PhoneGap operating system, it can be elucidated that this design constitutes a digital web application for ancient SASP manuscripts, facilitating access to comprehensive information regarding these manuscripts. The test findings indicate that this application can deliver information according to user requirements, including manuscript details in Arabic Malay script and translation. The translation and digitization of this document will serve as a resource for digital literacy for students and the community

Abstract

In the face of rapid globalization, traditional oral literature faces the risk of marginalization, particularly in its role as a transmitter of local wisdom and moral values. This study examines the Minangkabau traditional pantun titled Budi to explore how moral education is embedded within local poetic forms. Utilizing Riffaterre’s semiotic framework, the research applies qualitative referential analysis to uncover the symbolic and intertextual dimensions of the text. Data were collected through observation and note-taking, followed by a four-stage semiotic reading process: heuristic reading, hermeneutic interpretation, matrix-model-variant analysis, and intertextual mapping. The findings reveal that Budi pantun encapsulates a rich tapestry of moral teachings: heuristic reading uncovers normative guidance for proper conduct; hermeneutic reading highlights deeper ethical reflections; matrix-model-variant analysis emphasizes cultural ideals of civility; and intertextual analysis connects the pantun with broader moral discourses in Minangkabau and Nusantara traditions. This research contributes to the preservation of intangible cultural heritage by documenting and analyzing indigenous moral philosophy embedded in oral literature. It also provides a critical pedagogical framework for integrating traditional texts into character education curricula. By highlighting the educational potential of pantun, the study advocates for culturally responsive teaching strategies that reinforce local identity while fostering universal ethical values. Future research should explore comparative semiotic analyses across ethnic literary traditions to enrich intercultural understanding and moral literacy in education systems.

Abstract

This study aims to: 1) analyze the implications of the policy on students' competence in using scientific Indonesian, and 2) evaluate the impact of eliminating the thesis as a medium for developing academic writing. Data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, and  document analysis at 9 universities ranked in the top 25 according to Time Higher Education  (THE) for the June 2023 period. This study reveals that the policy of eliminating the obligation  to write a thesis in Permendikbudristek No. 53/2023 has the potential to reduce students'  competence in mastering scientific Indonesian. Indonesian remains important as the main medium in developing critical thinking skills, scientific argumentation, and academic communication in various forms of alternative final assignments, such as projects, prototypes, or other innovative works. Good and correct mastery of Indonesian remains an important pillar in ensuring the quality of learning outcomes and student contributions in the academic and professional world. The implication is that it is necessary for the Directorate General of Higher Education to prepare technical implementation guidelines that regulate: 1) minimum language content standards for all types of final assignments, 2) validation mechanisms for Indonesian language competency, for example with the Indonesian Language Proficiency Test (UKBI), and 3) allocation of special credits for academic writing training so that mastery of Indonesian remains the foundation of academic competency for university graduates.
