Abstract

Benign tumors were more common than malignant tumors, with a ratio of 1:100. However, in 2019, approximately 13,000 cases of malignant tumors were reported in the United States. Based on data from Cancer Referral Hospitals in Indonesia, soft tissue sarcomas were among the ten most common cancers in 2013, with approximately 75% of cases occurring in the extremity region. This study aimed to describe the histopathological examination results of patients with soft tissue tumors at the Madani General Hospital, Medan City. This study used a retrospective descriptive design by collecting data from the medical records of patients who underwent histopathological examination at the Anatomical Pathology Laboratory of Madani General Hospital (period 2018-2022). Data were analyzed based on the distribution of cases according to age, sex, and tumor type. The results showed that soft tissue tumors were most prevalent in the 41-50 age group with 30 patients (20.3%), the majority were female with 85 patients (57.4%), and based on histopathological diagnosis, lipoma was the most common type of tumor found in 70 patients (47.3%). All cases studied were benign tumors, with a total of 148 patients (100%).

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between anemia and quality of life in patients with chronic renal failure undergoing hemodialysis at Royal Prima Hospital. An analytical observational design using a cross-sectional approach was used. Data were collected from pre-existing medical records, and quality of life was assessed using a modified WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire that evaluates various aspects of life using a 5-point Likert scale. The chi-square test was used to determine the significance of the relationship between anemia status and quality of life among patients. A study of 51 hemodialysis patients at Royal Prima Hospital showed a high prevalence of anemia, with 86.3% of patients showing hemoglobin levels below the normal range. Although most patients (92.2%) were prescribed Sangobion, an iron supplement, many patients remained anemic, indicating a potential problem in terms of treatment efficacy or compliance. The duration of hemodialysis varied among the participants, with most undergoing treatment for more than 24 months, while the others were on hemodialysis for less than 24 months. About 92.2% reported a moderate quality of life, while only 7.8% experienced a poor quality of life. Statistical analysis showed no significant difference in the quality of life between patients with and without anemia (p=0.495), indicating that anemia may not have a direct impact on the overall quality of life for this patient population. In conclusion, although anemia is prevalent in hemodialysis patients at Royal Prima Hospital, its association with quality of life appears to be limited based on the findings of this study. Future research should focus on understanding the causes of anemia in this population and developing targeted strategies to improve the hematological status and overall quality of life of patients undergoing hemodialysis.

Abstract

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art that focuses on floor fighting and was first popularized in Brazil. The BJJ originally focused on entertainment, health, and self-development. These goals changed when practitioners began participating in competitions in which there was a significant increase in the number of BJJ injuries. A pre-survey in the field indicated that many jiu jitsu practitioners were affected by common injuries. The type of research in this study is a descriptive survey with a cross-sectional approach conducted at Ryu Dojo Martial Arts Center, Musi Jiu Jitsu, and PBJI Medan City in March 2024. Data were collected in the form of questionnaires, interviews, and medical records of practitioners diagnosed with injuries who were sampled. Univariate analysis was used to obtain the frequency distribution of respondents for each variable, namely age, gender, belt level, weight, training frequency, and competitor status. The results of the study were analyzed using SPSS version 27.0. The results showed that the highest number of practitioners was in the late teenage group (53.8%), the highest gender was male (92.3%), and the highest number of practitioners was white belt (69.2%). Based on body weight, the highest number of practitioners was in the Light Feather category (< 64 kg/141 lbs) with a percentage of 26.9%, and the most training hours were 3-5 hours 16 (30.8%). Lower Back Pain was the most common injury with a total of 25 practitioners. A total of 75% of the practitioners stated that their daily activities were disrupted because of their injuries. It can be concluded that the majority of BJJ participants were in their late teens, male was the most common gender, and white belts were the most common practitioners. The most common injury was lower back pain due to the amateur competitor status. Most respondents stated that their injuries interfered with their daily activities.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic endocrine disorder characterized by an imbalance in the immune system, with a growing prevalence both globally and in Indonesia. The predominant risk factors for T2DM are sex, age, obesity, smoking, and physical inactivity. Complications of DM can be categorized into microvascular and macrovascular, with higher prevalence rates observed in women and the elderly. This study aimed to describe the characteristics of patients diagnosed with DM at Royal Prima General Hospital in 2023. A quantitative, cross-sectional design was employed, with data collected between May and July 2024. A total of 68 patients were selected using the Slovin formula. The inclusion criteria were patients diagnosed with DM and complete medical records, while the exclusion criteria included incomplete data, deceased patients, or those without complications. Univariate descriptive statistics were used for data analysis. The majority of the 68 patients were aged > 60 years (55.9%) and female (63.2%). The most common occupation was homemaker/unemployed (47.1%), and a significant proportion of the patients had a normal body mass index (86.8%). Microvascular complications were the most prevalent, affecting 54.4% of the patients. Advanced age, female sex, and low physical activity were the dominant factors influencing DM prevalence at Royal Prima General Hospital. Microvascular complications are a major health concern in DM patients.

Abstract

Tension-type headache (TTH) is one of the most common types of primary headaches experienced by all age groups worldwide. The incidence of TTH among the medical students was also high. This study aimed to identify the relationship between anxiety and the incidence among medical students. We used an analytical descriptive research design and a cross-sectional study approach. A total of 119 students from Prima Indonesia University Faculty of Medicine participated in this study. Data were collected using the Back Anxiety Inventory (BAI) questionnaire to measure anxiety levels and Headache Screening Questionnaire (HSQ) to measure the incidence of TTH. The results of data analysis using the chi-square test showed a significant relationship between anxiety levels and the incidence of TTH (p = 0.026). This finding indicates that the higher a person's anxiety level, the more likely they are to experience TTH. Based on the results of the study, 84.87% (101 people) of the participants experienced TTH, while 15.13% (18 people) experienced possible TTH. The majority of the participants with high anxiety levels were female (94.4%). It can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between anxiety and the incidence of TTH among Prima Indonesia University Faculty of Medicine students in 2023. This finding supports the hypothesis that anxiety is a risk factor of TTH.

Abstract

Gadget usage has become an integral part of the lives of students in the modern era, including Indonesia, where there has been a significant increase in gadget users. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the frequency of gadget use and the occurrence of headaches among medical students at Universitas Prima Indonesia in 2022. Using a quantitative descriptive approach and cross-sectional research design, this study analyzed the data collected through a questionnaire. Chi-square tests were used to examine the relationship between the independent variable, gadget usage, and the dependent variable, the occurrence of headaches. The results indicated that tension-type headaches were the most common type experienced by students, followed by migraines. However, some students reported cluster headaches, while others did not experience any headaches. The most significant finding was the strong correlation between the frequency and duration of gadget use and the increased risk of developing headaches. These findings underscore the importance of recognizing the negative health consequences of excessive gadget use, particularly among students. Therefore, there is a need for strategies to manage gadget usage wisely to prevent headaches that may disrupt academic performance and overall quality of life.

Abstract

Regular consumption of probiotic drinks has been shown to provide numerous benefits for human health. One of the primary benefits is boosting the immune system by promoting optimal digestive health. Ten brands of probiotic milk were collected, and bacterial isolates were obtained through a series of isolation and purification steps. The characterization of these isolates involved morphological and biochemical tests, including Gram staining, catalase activity assessment, and tolerance testing under simulated gastric conditions. The cholesterol-lowering activity of the isolates was evaluated in vitro by assessing their ability to reduce cholesterol levels in a simulated intestinal environment. The results demonstrated the presence of potential probiotic strains with cholesterol-lowering activity, providing a foundation for further research into the development of functional dairy products with cholesterol-lowering properties. The results indicated that probiotic milk from commercial beverages demonstrated a favorable response to bile salts in individuals with high cholesterol levels. Probiotic bacteria, such as Lactobacillus acidophilus, can survive in bile, facilitating the deconjugation of bile salts. This suggests that regular consumption of probiotic milk may aid in managing cholesterol levels in individuals with unhealthy lipid profiles. A significant relationship exists between the tolerance of probiotic milk to the digestive environment and its effectiveness in managing cholesterol. Mechanisms including bile salt deconjugation, short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, and increased cholesterol excretion contribute to cholesterol management. With appropriate formulation, probiotic milk can effectively control cholesterol levels, particularly in individuals at risk for cardiovascular disease.

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a metabolic disease affecting various organs and causing hormonal disorders. Estrogen deficiency can alter a woman's menstrual cycle and trigger menopause, which affects reproductive health, fat distribution, lipid profiles, and the nervous system. This study aimed to assess the relationship between T2DM and menopausal age in women in the menopausal phase. The research method used was observational with a cross-sectional design, using 120 medical records of menopausal women from the period 2020-2022 at the Royal Prima Hospital. To explore the relationship between menopausal age and T2DM, bivariate analysis was performed, including the Chi-square test or Fisher's Exact Test for categorical variables, as well as t-test or Mann-Whitney U test for numerical variables. The results showed that the age range of 51-60 years constituted the largest group of 120 T2DM patients (29.17%). The most common age of onset of menopause was between 46-50 years, and showed a significant influence on the risk of T2DM (sig value 0.026 and t value 2.257). Blood pressure, which varied from 81 mmHg to 283 mmHg, showed no significant association with T2DM. It can be concluded that age at the onset of menopause was significantly associated with the risk of T2DM, whereas blood pressure had no significant effect on T2DM in this study. These findings highlight the importance of health monitoring in women with early menopause to prevent the development of T2DM.
