Abstract

This study aims to analyze the digitalization strategies of mobile banking services implemented by Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI) and to identify the challenges and opportunities arising from the digital transformation process grounded in Sharia principles. This research employs a qualitative method with a literature review approach, drawing from scholarly journals, reputable articles, and official documents from relevant financial institutions. The findings reveal that BSI adopts three primary strategies in its digitalization efforts: (1) post-merger technology integration, (2) service innovation through the BSI Mobile application, and (3) internal business process transformation. However, several challenges persist, including low levels of digital literacy among the population, limited infrastructure in frontier, outermost, and underdeveloped (3T) regions, competition with conventional digital banks, and the need to ensure Sharia compliance in technological features. On the other hand, BSI holds strategic opportunities to enhance financial inclusion, target the millennial demographic, and actively contribute to the development of a halal digital economic ecosystem through the innovation of Sharia-compliant financial products. With proper management, this digital transformation has the potential to position BSI as a pioneering, adaptive, competitive, and sustainable digital Islamic bank.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and evaluate the performance of Bank Muamalat Indonesia (BMI) during the 2019–2023 period using the Sharia Maqasid Index (SMI). The research applies a descriptive quantitative approach with secondary data obtained from BMI’s annual reports. The analysis was conducted using the index number method developed by Mohammed et al. (2008), covering three maqasid shariah dimensions: Tahdzib al-Fard (individual education), Iqamah al-Adl (establishing justice), and Jalb al-Maslahah (realizing welfare). The results reveal that BMI’s performance remains fluctuating, with the highest score in 2022 (0.9210) and a significant decline in 2023 (0.4235). The justice dimension appeared as the strongest, while individual education and welfare showed persistent weaknesses due to the lack of sustainable human resource development, limited zakat and CSR distribution, and insufficient financing for the real sector. These findings indicate that BMI’s implementation of maqasid shariah has not been consistent and requires strategic improvement. The recommended strategies include consistent budget allocation for training and Islamic financial literacy programs, strengthening the role of the Sharia Supervisory Board to enhance transparency in financing, and expanding social contributions through zakat, CSR, and financing in productive sectors such as SMEs and the halal industry. By adopting these measures, Islamic banking is expected to become not only financially competitive but also socially relevant and sustainable.

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools play a vital role in fostering economic independence through the development of creative industries rooted in local wisdom. This study focuses on Darussalam Islamic Boarding School, Billapora Timur, Sumenep, which initiated a batik enterprise known as Batik Gungsumi. The innovation utilizes ancient local manuscripts as the source of inspiration for batik motifs, producing cultural and spiritual values alongside economic benefits. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving school leaders, students, and alumni engaged in the batik business. The findings indicate that Batik Gungsumi significantly contributes to pesantren’s economic independence by generating sustainable income, creating job opportunities, and enhancing students’ entrepreneurial skills. Moreover, the creative reinterpretation of manuscript-based motifs strengthens cultural identity and improves competitiveness within the creative industry. Consequently, Batik Gungsumi serves not only as an instrument of pesantren’s economic empowerment but also as a medium for cultural preservation and a learning platform that balances religious education with entrepreneurship in facing modern challenges.

Abstract

Income inequality is a crucial structural issue in Indonesia's development, marked by a trend in the Gini Ratio that has remained relatively stagnant around 0.38 since 2020. This condition indicates that conventional policy interventions have not been entirely effective, necessitating alternative instruments of distributive justice, namely Zakat and Infaq, which are theoretically designed to redistribute wealth from the affluent (aghniya) to the rightful recipients (mustahik). This study aims to empirically analyze the role of Infaq Receipts (X1), Infaq Disbursement (X2), Zakat Receipts (X3), and Zakat Disbursement (X4) on the Gini Ratio (Y) as a proxy for income inequality in Indonesia.Using the multiple linear regression analysis method on time series data, the results show that the regression model is simultaneously significant in affecting the Gini Ratio (Sig.=0.037) with a strong predictive power (R Square=0.830). This indicates that 83.0% of the variation in inequality can be explained by Zakat and Infaq activities. However, partially (t-test), most variables do not significantly influence the Gini Ratio (X1, X3, and X4), suggesting that the current volume or mechanism of Zakat and Infaq funds is not yet statistically strong or efficient enough to significantly reduce widespread inequality. The only variable showing an indication of influence is Infaq Disbursement (X2), which is significant at α=0.10 (Sig.=0.076), but with a positive coefficient (B=0.001). This counter-intuitive finding highlights the need for an in-depth review of the effectiveness and targeting of Infaq disbursement, which might still be oriented towards short-term consumption, thus failing to fundamentally narrow the economic gap. This research recommends strengthening the strategic disbursement of Zakat and Infaq towards productive programs to maximize their contribution to realizing distributive justice in Indonesia.

Abstract

The practice of agricultural trade under a capital-binding system is still widely found in Tekad Village, Pulau Panggung District, Tanggamus Regency. In this system, farmers receive capital in the form of seeds or production supplies from middlemen; however, in return, they are obliged to sell their harvests back to the lenders at prices unilaterally determined. This situation creates an imbalance, as the prices received by farmers are lower than the market value, causing economic disadvantages and raising questions of fairness in such transactions. This study aims to examine the pricing mechanism in the sale and purchase of corn within the capital-binding system and to assess whether the practice aligns with the principles of Islamic economic law. The findings reveal that corn prices are set solely by the middlemen, averaging IDR 4,000 per kilogram, while the market price reaches IDR 4,800 per kilogram. Although some farmers accept these conditions because they feel helped by the initial capital, the practice essentially reduces their rightful profit. From the perspective of Islamic economic law, such unilateral price determination does not reflect the principles of justice and mutual consent that should underpin transactions in muamalah. Therefore, this system needs improvement to ensure greater fairness and compliance with Sharia values.

Abstract

This study discusses the potential, role, and conceptual model of utilizing productive zakat funds integrated with creative economy principles as a strategy for empowering the economy of the Muslim community. Zakat not only functions as a social distribution instrument but also has great potential to promote economic independence through strengthening the creative sector and halal start-ups. Zakat institutions act as facilitators and catalysts in connecting zakat funds with creative entrepreneurs through financing, training, and sharia-based mentoring. The main challenges lie in managerial aspects, inter-institutional collaboration, and the digital literacy of mustahik (zakat recipients). This study uses a qualitative-descriptive approach with a conceptual research design based on library research. This study offers a conceptual model of “Creative Baznas Hub” based on four main pillars, namely innovation, collaboration, empowerment, and sustainability. This model aims to create a synergistic ecosystem between zakat institutions, the government, and the creative industry to produce sustainable socio-economic impacts. The results of the study show that the integration of zakat with the creative economy can strengthen the sharia economy, expand employment opportunities, and support the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Abstract

Indonesia, as the world's largest Muslim-majority nation, represents a unique case in integrating Sharī‘ah principles into national legal frameworks, particularly in the regulation of halal products. With more than 86 percent of its population adhering to Islam, the demand for halal assurance is not merely a matter of religious observance but a fundamental consumer right embedded within both moral philosophy and constitutional Law. This article explores the philosophical and legal foundations of halal product legislation in Indonesia through a dual perspective—Sharī‘ah and positive Law. The study employs a normative-empirical approach grounded in maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah analysis and legal positivism, examining how these epistemic frameworks converge in Law No. 33 of 2014 concerning Halal Product Assurance (Undang-Undang Jaminan Produk Halal, UU JPH). It further analyzes the institutional synergy between the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (Badan Penyelenggara Jaminan Produk Halal, BPJPH), and the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), assessing their shared role in enforcing ethical-economic equilibrium. Empirical data from 2019 to 2025 reveal that Indonesia's halal-certified products and exports have increased significantly, reflecting the effectiveness of the hybrid regulatory model. The findings highlight that the Indonesian halal system, while rooted in Islamic jurisprudence, also embodies constitutional rationality, where the State plays an active role in safeguarding the moral economy through Law. Ultimately, this research concludes that Indonesia's halal legislation manifests the synthesis of divine command ethics and public policy rationalism, symbolizing the philosophical unity between religion and State in protecting human dignity and consumer welfare.

Abstract

Gorontalo as the Veranda of Medina is one of the reasons for having cultural and customary values that are closely related to the Qur'an and Islam. The practice of maysir that has begun to exist in the Gorontalo Regency community is contrary to the culture and customs of Gorontalo which are based on the Qur'an. This study aims to explain the form of maysir practice in Gorontalo Regency and explain the causes of maysir practice in Gorontalo Regency. This study is a qualitative study. Two forms of maysir or gambling that are often carried out by the Gorontalo Regency community are boat racing and kite games. Kite games and boat racing in Gorontalo Regency are maysir because they fulfill the four elements of maysir. The two implementations of maysir in Gorontalo Regency have several similarities and also have several of the same causes. The perpetrators of maysir in Gorontalo Regency are not equipped with good and correct religious knowledge. Furthermore, although the majority of Gorontalo society is now Muslim, rejection of Islam in Gorontalo also occurred and continues to this day, one of which is the implementation of maysir which occurred in Gorontalo Regency. Coupled with the influence of parties from outside the Gorontalo society who provide understandings that are not in accordance with Gorontalo customs.
