Abstract

The rapid expansion of digital media has transformed journalistic media consumption patterns in higher education, raising concerns about information credibility and increasing vulnerability to misinformation. This study aims to analyse differences in patterns, preferences, and objectives of journalistic media use between university students and lecturers in Medan City. The research employed a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving students and lecturers from several higher education institutions. The findings reveal clear differences between the two groups. Students tend to rely on social media platforms and digital news portals due to their speed, ease of access, and compatibility with digital lifestyles. At the same time, lecturers predominantly use more credible and analytical journalistic sources, such as Kompas.com, Tempo.co, and academic journals to support teaching and research activities. Variations influence these differences in digital literacy levels, information needs, and attitudes toward misinformation. Students are found to be more vulnerable to hoaxes, whereas lecturers demonstrate more critical and selective information practices. The study highlights the importance of strengthening media literacy in higher education through curriculum integration, targeted training, and collaboration with media professionals to foster a credible and educational digital information ecosystem.

Abstract

Islamic educational institutions often face challenges in building and maintaining a positive public image amid increasing competition and rising expectations from local communities. These challenges highlight the need for public relations (PR) management strategies that are not only effective in communication but also responsive to sociocultural contexts. This study aims to analyze the strategic role of public relations management in shaping a positive image of Islamic educational institutions based on local community needs. This research employed a qualitative approach using content analysis combined with a systematic literature review. Data were obtained from institutional documents, media content, and relevant scholarly sources. The findings indicate that the effectiveness of PR management is determined not merely by external communication activities, but by the alignment of PR strategies with the cultural and social values of the surrounding community. The integration of Islamic values and active community participation emerged as key differentiating factors in strengthening public trust. In addition to digital communication and media publication strategies, the study reveals that the involvement of religious leaders, the organization of religious forums, and the application of a humanist communication approach significantly contribute to enhancing institutional reputation. Overall, this study contributes to the development of educational public relations theory by emphasizing the importance of sociocultural and value-based approaches in designing sustainable institutional image strategies.

Abstract

The increasing number of elderly Hajj pilgrims in Medan City presents specific challenges in religious services, particularly related to physical decline, communication barriers, and the need for emotional support. These conditions often affect the quality of worship experiences among elderly pilgrims. This study aims to analyze the role of interpersonal communication in religious services for elderly Hajj pilgrims and to formulate an effective communication model that ensures a safe, comfortable, and meaningful worship experience. This research employs a qualitative approach, with field research and descriptive analysis. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, non-participant observations, and documentation involving companions, elderly members of the Hajj Guidance Group (KBIH), administrators, health workers, and pilgrims’ families. Data validity was ensured through triangulation and member checking techniques. The results indicate that interpersonal communication plays a strategic role as a medium for empathy, adaptation, and problem-solving in assisting elderly pilgrims. An effective communication model is characterized by patience, empathy, simple, clear language, two-way communication, and active family involvement. Companions adapt their communication styles to the physical and psychological conditions of the elderly; health workers use visual and nonverbal communication to enhance understanding; and families support the communication process through regular meetings and digital platforms such as WhatsApp. This communication model significantly improves the quality of religious services and worship experiences for elderly Hajj pilgrims.

Abstract

This study addresses the challenge of improving madrasah quality amid rapid educational transformation, in which many institutions still rely on bureaucratic, routine-based management practices that limit innovation and institutional learning. The objective of this research is to develop and analyze an Islamic values-based learning organization model as a strategic framework for sustainably enhancing the quality of madrasahs. The study employed a qualitative case study approach conducted in three State Islamic Senior High Schools (MAN) in Majalengka Regency. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis involving principals, teachers, administrative staff, and students. The data were analyzed thematically to identify patterns of organizational transformation and quality improvement. The findings reveal that the implementation of the model led to measurable improvements in four key areas: (1) increased teacher professionalism through collaborative and reflective learning practices, (2) transformation of instructional methods toward participatory and technology-supported learning, (3) strengthening of Islamic-based organizational culture characterized by shared values such as taqwa, ikhlas, and amanah, and (4) enhanced institutional autonomy through participatory and ethical leadership. The integration of learning organization principles with Islamic values functioned not merely as normative guidance but as operational mechanisms driving continuous improvement. This study concludes that an Islamic values-based learning organization model provides a holistic, context-sensitive framework that promotes both academic excellence and character development in madrasahs.

Abstract

Rural EFL students at SMPN 2 Labobo face difficulties in mastering English vocabulary because the learning process is often boring and relies on traditional, teacher-centred methods. resulting in frequent word retention problems, inaccurate usage, and low motivation in learning English. Therefore, this research aimed to evaluate the effect of game-based learning using Wordwall on improving English vocabulary mastery of eighth-grade students at SMPN 2 Labobo. The research employed a quantitative pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test approach, involving 19 students. The intervention consisted of six meetings using interactive Wordwall activities, including matching pairs, quizzes, word searches, sentence building, and categorisation, focusing on nouns, verbs, and adjectives in context. Vocabulary mastery was assessed via written tests evaluating grammatical accuracy, appropriate vocabulary use, and sentence clarity. Data from the pre-test and post-test were analysed using a paired-samples t-test. The results showed a significant improvement, with pre-test mean scores rising from 36.63 to 72.16 post-test, a gain of 35.53 points, and a paired t-test confirming statistical significance, t = -10.809, p = 0.000. These findings highlight that Wordwall's strategy is effective in enhancing engagement and retention in a rural school context, offering pedagogical implications for integrating digital tools in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction.

Abstract

This study aims to determine students' interest in using the shadowing technique to improve pronunciation skills in English language learning. The shadowing technique, which requires students to listen and simultaneously imitate the speech of native speakers, is considered an effective approach to improve pronunciation accuracy, fluency, and self-confidence. This study used a qualitative descriptive method involving 25 seventh-grade students at MTS Swasta Al-Anshor Perdagangan II. Data were collected through a closed-ended questionnaire with a four-point Likert scale designed to measure students' perceptions, attitudes, and interests toward the application of the shadowing technique. The results showed that most students had a high level of interest and positive attitudes toward the use of shadowing in pronunciation learning. The majority of students stated that this technique helped improve speaking fluency, self-confidence, and enjoyment in learning English. Although some students had difficulty keeping up with the pace of native speakers, they still considered shadowing a useful and interesting method. These findings suggest that the integration of the shadowing technique in pronunciation teaching can encourage active learning, independent learning, and continuous improvement in students' speaking skills.

Abstract

This study addresses the growing challenge faced by Islamic da’wah institutions in balancing managerial effectiveness with the preservation of spiritual values. Many religious organizations struggle to integrate performance-based leadership with transcendental and prophetic principles, leading to either managerial stagnation or value dilution. In response to this issue, this research aims to examine how a spiritual-transformational leadership model is constructed at the Al-Bahjah Da'wah Development Institute (LPD) and how it shapes organizational culture and institutional commitment. This study employs a qualitative design grounded in a constructivist paradigm. Data were collected through systematic field observation, in-depth interviews with organizational actors, and analysis of institutional documentation. The data were analyzed using thematic interpretation involving coding, categorization, and reflective triangulation to ensure credibility and analytical rigor. The findings reveal that leadership at LPD Al-Bahjah is built on the integration of tawhid-based values, moral exemplarity (uswah), a visionary da’wah orientation, and the structured empowerment of human resources. This integration generates a religious-adaptive organizational culture characterized by collective worship practices, high member loyalty, ethical innovation, and sustained institutional growth. The study demonstrates that spiritual and transformational dimensions function synergistically rather than separately, forming a leadership model that strengthens organizational identity, commitment, and resilience amid contemporary social change.

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) currently face social, economic, and digital pressures that force them to reimagine how they communicate the value of education to the community. This study aims to explore the implementation of promotional mix strategies in Islamic boarding schools and how these practices support student recruitment in the digital era while still aligning with Islamic ethical principles. The research method used was a qualitative case study, where data were collected through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs), observation, and document analysis. The results indicate that Islamic boarding schools utilize a combination of public relations, personal selling, advertising, sales promotions, and a growing digital marketing strategy. Community engagement and interpersonal trust remain central elements, while digital platforms serve as supporting tools to expand reach and strengthen the institution's image. However, optimization of digital strategies remains hampered by limited human resources and technical capacity. This study contributes to the educational marketing literature by demonstrating how the promotional mix framework is adapted in faith-based institutions, where promotional activities are framed as community service rather than purely commercial. Practically, this study offers guidance for Islamic boarding school (pesantren) administrators to strengthen student recruitment without compromising moral integrity in communication practices.

Abstract

This study investigates the accuracy of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in assessing the IELTS Academic Writing Task essays by comparing AI-generated and human examiner scores and feedback. Despite the increasing adoption of AI-based assessment tools, limited empirical evidence exists regarding their validity and reliability in high-stakes IELTS writing evaluation. Therefore, this study aims to determine whether significant differences exist between AI and human scoring and to examine the qualitative characteristics of the feedback provided. This research employed a mixed-method explanatory design involving ten participants who completed a computer-based IELTS prediction test. Their essays were independently evaluated by an AI scoring system and a human rater using IELTS band descriptors. Quantitative analysis using a paired-sample t-test measured differences in assigned scores, while qualitative content analysis examined patterns, depth, and focus of the feedback provided. The findings indicate a statistically significant difference between AI-generated and human-assigned scores (p = 0.022), with a mean difference of 0.4 points, suggesting that AI tended to assign higher scores. The feedback analysis reveals that AI primarily focuses on technical aspects such as grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure, offering general improvement suggestions, whereas human feedback demonstrates greater depth and personalization. These results suggest that while AI enhances scoring efficiency, it cannot fully replace human evaluative judgment in complex academic writing assessment.
