Abstract

This study explores the implementation of character education in two urban-based student Islamic boarding schools affiliated with Islamic universities in Yogyakarta: The Islamic University of Indonesia (UII) and Ma’had Aly bin Abi Talib at Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta (UMY). While character education is a key feature in both classical and modern pesantren, this research investigates how these two institutions adapt their strategies to address the moral and social challenges faced by contemporary urban Muslim students in higher education contexts. Using a qualitative field approach, data were collected through interviews with caregivers, lecturers, and students, as well as observations and institutional document analysis during the 2022–2023 academic year. The findings reveal that UII emphasizes structured mentoring, leadership development, and integrative academic-religious programs, while UMY focuses on project-based learning through da’wah and tahfidz activities to shape students’ religious, social, and leadership character. Unlike pesantren in rural or traditional contexts, these urban-based institutions integrate academic demands, digital technology, and modern social dynamics into their character education framework. This study contributes to a contextual understanding of character development for contemporary urban Muslim students in Islamic higher education institutions.

Abstract

This paper argues that the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) plays a vital role in facilitating the inclusion and participation of marginalized Muslim minorities into the Philippine nation-state's development framework. While there have been extensive studies on how Wasaṭiyya was adopted by some Southeast Asian countries, little is known about this principle in the Philippines and how the government can utilize its state institutions like NCMF to address inclusion and welfare of its Muslim minority population. This study asks: How does the NCMF embodies and implements Wasaṭiyya principles in its mandates and programs for Muslim Filipinos? Specifically, through its diverse government programs and activities across key domains, NCMF substantively actualizes the principles of Wasaṭiyya - the Islamic values of moderation, justice, balance, ease, striving for excellence, and public good. The NCMF was chosen as the focus due to its unique position as the primary state body for Muslim affairs, offering a contemporary lens on minority governance. Thereby, it translates the abstract philosophical virtues into practical accommodation policies and arrangements that oblige the state's commitments and responsibilities towards respecting and upholding the identity, rights, welfare, and dignity of Muslim Filipinos. Furthermore, this paper argues that rather than coercive assimilation under a forced 'Filipino' identity construction, the Philippine government’s accommodation policies through the NCMF's cultivation of cultural sensitivity allow groups to access equitable progress and development of Muslim Filipino minorities. NCMF’s interventions enable vulnerable minorities to transition towards becoming stakeholders shaping an inclusive shared future. Institutionalizing Wasaṭiyya through the NCMF is crucial for the Philippines as it provides a culturally sensitive approach to Muslim minority integration, potentially mitigating historical tensions and fostering sustainable peace. Embedding Wasaṭiyya principles in responsive governance infrastructure, the NCMF plays an invaluable role in reconciling the Philippines' complex past tensions between state and minorities to effect sustainable conflict transformation through prudent accommodation.

Abstract

Due to the rapid development of information technology, the world is increasingly open. This causes the people of the world be intensely connected to each other. The diversity of cultures, beliefs, and religious practices is becoming more open. If society is not educated about the importance of diversity awareness, then conflict can occur. This study discusses the thoughts of Moh. Qasim Mathar on contemporary theological issues and his contribution to building theological awareness in the city of Makassar. The data collection method was carried out through an in-depth study of his thoughts (content analysis) which were published periodically in the mass media through the Jendela Langit column in the Fajar Newspaper, as well as through in-depth interviews with a number of sources. The results of the study confirm that Qasim Mathar offers valuable insights into the importance of building an inclusive theology and maintaining pluralism in the midst of urban society to ensure the presence of harmony and coexistence of pluralistic, heterogeneous, and dynamic urban society. This study also reveals how Qasim Mathar's thoughts contribute to presenting theological awareness in the midst of urban society. The presence of religious dialogue spaces in several institutions such as in MUI, Postgraduate Program, Cadar Garis Lucu Community, House of Philosophy, and Matahari Islamic Boarding School Foundation is the real evidence of Qasim Mathar's contribution to urban society. The findings of this study indicate that Mathar's thoughts provide a framework for understanding the flexibility and resilience of theology in facing modern challenges, and highlight the importance of contextualizing religious values in the socio-cultural realities of urban society.

Abstract

This research aims to develop a guiding model to assimilate the values of religious moderation among students to ward off extremism in two urban cities: Jakarta, Indonesia, and Basra, Iraq. This research uses the Borg and Gall model design development research method. Data in the study consisted of document data in the form of lecture materials and reference books related to religious moderation in Jakarta and Basra, and data from the needs analysis of students in the two towns associated with the guiding model for understanding the values of religious moderation. This research concludes that the guiding model for understanding the values of religious moderation in the cities of Jakarta and Basra needs to be developed in several ways: efforts to instil values of religious moderation among students in the cities of Jakarta and Basra and efforts to instil the values of religious moderation in students in the cities of Jakarta and Basra. The value of religious moderation is in the aspect of love for the homeland and the state; the value of religious moderation is on the side of tolerance and the prohibition of extremism, and the value of religious moderation is on the side of friendship and avoiding conflict.

Abstract

Islam recognizes the urge to engage in commercial operations and does not forbid such activities; in fact, business activities can be an element of worship if done according to Islamic code of ethics.  This principle becomes particularly relevant in analyzing the business practices of Muslim traders within the contemporary urban Muslim society of the City of Thousand Churches. The purpose of this article is to meticulously map the business practices of urban Muslim traders in the city of a thousand churches, using Rafik Issa Beekun's theory of Islamic business ethics, as well as theory indicators such as unity, equilibrium, freewill, responsibility, and benevolence. This study used a descriptive qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. A total of six informants, consisting of four women and two men who are Muslim traders in urban Manado, were selected to provide in-depth information based on their business experiences within the predominantly non-Muslim society. The data collected from these interviews were analyzed using the framework of Islamic business ethics to explore the ethical practices applied by these traders. The findings of this study demonstrate that practically all informants who operate as traders in the Urban Manado area met the five markers of Islamic business ethics theory. Although two traders' practices do not match the Free Will indicator, this has no substantial impact because they can still be improved through socialization. It may be inferred that, despite the fact that Muslim traders reside in a minority area, trade practices consistent with Islamic business ethics are nonetheless widely practiced by traders in Manado's urban centre, known as the city of a thousand churches.

Abstract

The understanding of religious texts in contemporary Muslim communities is often dominated by a rigid literal approach that overlooks the inner dimensions and social contexts. In facing the challenges of modernity, pluralism, and the complexities of urban life, an alternative interpretation that is more inclusive and flexible is needed. Ibn Arabi, a Sufi and Islamic philosopher, offers profound hermeneutics through the power of imagination, symbolism, ‘irfani epistemology, and his mystical system of knowledge. This study aims to explore Ibn Arabi’s hermeneutical concepts as an alternative religious interpretation relevant to contemporary urban Muslim communities. The method employed is a literature review using a hermeneutical approach, involving an in-depth analysis of Ibn Arabi’s major works, such as al-Futuhat al-Makiyyah and Fusus al-Hikam, along with modern interpretations of his intellectual legacy. The findings reveal that Ibn Arabi’s hermeneutics provide a strong foundation for understanding religious texts more holistically, integrating the inner and outer dimensions through methods such as ta’wil, kashf, and mushahadah. Ibn Arabi’s approach is relevant for urban communities as it bridges tradition and modernity, fostering a spiritual, inclusive, and contextual understanding of religion. His intellectual legacy not only addresses the challenges of modern religious interpretation but also opens up spaces for dialogue between Islamic traditions and contemporary societal needs.

Abstract

This study examines the application of moderation education based on a holistic approach as the key to building a balance of thinking to overcome radicalism and intolerance, especially in the context of the Contemporary Urban Muslim Society. This holistic approach integrates intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects to form a moderate, tolerant, and open-minded character, relevant to urban challenges such as cultural pluralism, secularism, and global information penetration. The study uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach to explore the lived experiences and perspectives of students, educators, principals, and parents in educational institutions implementing holistic moderation education. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis to understand how moderation values are internalized in everyday learning practices. The findings show that the balance of thought resulting from holistic education effectively enhances critical thinking, empathy, and appreciation for diversity, key foundations in preventing extremism. In urban Muslim communities, interactive learning methods such as group discussions, cross-cultural studies, and project-based learning are essential to support the internalization of moderate values in complex social environments. The novelty of this study lies in its phenomenological insight into how holistic education fosters inclusive, progressive, and peace-oriented Muslim youth. However, the scope of this study is limited to urban Muslim settings, and the findings may not fully represent broader or rural contexts. This approach is expected to offer a contextual model for cultivating tolerance and resilience in global social dynamics while staying rooted in Islamic values.

Abstract

This study examines the religious responses of pesantren-based Muslim women in urban Indonesia to the fatwa issued by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) supporting Palestine. The research focuses on the Jam'iyyah Perempuan Pengasuh Pesantren dan Muballighah (JP3M) in Metro City, employing a qualitative phenomenological approach through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The findings reveal three main dimensions in interpreting the fatwa: Islamic solidarity (ukhuwah Islamiyah), humanitarian solidarity (ukhuwah insaniyah), and contextual understanding. These dimensions manifest in community actions such as fundraising, digital campaigns, and public education, integrating religious values with modern practices. The study indicates that religious literacy, access to global information, and local social dynamics shape the religious expressions of urban Muslim women. However, the geographically limited context of Metro City may influence the findings due to regional cultural factors, community social structures, and institutional access, which may not reflect other urban settings. Therefore, comparative studies involving similar communities across diverse regions must capture a broader spectrum of religious responses. Moreover, a multidisciplinary approach combining perspectives from sociology, religious studies, and digital technology is essential to provide a more comprehensive and contextually relevant analysis of this complex global religious phenomenon.

Abstract

The research was motivated by the reduced interest of the Muzakki in channeling funds, both zakat, infaq, and shodaqoh, at the Amil Zakat Institution. Therefore, a good fundraising strategy is needed at the Amil Zakat Institution to increase interest and channeling of zakat funds by Muzakki, so that the objectives of the Amil Zakat Institution are achieved. The collection of Zakat, Infaq, and Shodaqoh (ZIS) funds is one of the important aspects of Islamic wealth management. The purpose of this research is to analyze the effective ZIS collection strategy at Amil Zakat Institution. This type of research is field research with a qualitative approach, with a case study method at one of the Amil Zakat Institutions (LAZ) at Rumah Yatim in the Bandar Lampung Region. The data collection method uses observation, interview, and documentation. This data was analyzed with an inductive approach to draw general conclusions from the specific data collected. The results showed that effective ZIS fundraising strategies include: Increasing public awareness through campaigns and education related to zakat; Optimizing the use of information technology, such as mobile applications, websites and social media; Partnership with government agencies and private companies in the management of professional zakat and corporate zakat; Improving services and ease of ZIS payment; Strengthening human resources and collection infrastructure. From this study, Amil Zakat institutions must design innovative and adaptive ZIS fund collection strategies in line with current developments to maximize the potential of ZIS funds for the welfare of the community.

Abstract

This study examines how Islamic schools in urbanized areas of East Kutai, a district in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, navigate pedagogical adaptation, maintain religious authenticity, and address the impact of student diversity. While East Kutai is geographically a district, its urbanized centers, particularly in towns like Sangatta, have seen rapid development, leading to an increasingly diverse student population and a blend of traditional and modern educational approaches. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study collected survey data from 309 students and conducted interviews with 36 teachers, parents, and students across four Islamic schools in the region. The findings reveal that blended learning models enhance engagement but require contextual adaptation to preserve religious depth. Privately funded schools demonstrate greater adaptability, while government-funded madrasahs face resource limitations. Additionally, cultural diversity enriches classroom discussions but complicates standardized learning. The study highlights the need for hybrid pedagogical strategies integrating digital tools without compromising theological integrity. Policymakers must address funding disparities and support teacher training to ensure inclusive, high-quality IRE. This research contributes to the discourse on religious education by proposing a contextualized digital adaptation model, offering practical recommendations for sustaining Islamic educational identity in urbanized settings.
