Abstract

Limited access to engaging learning resources, inadequate use of digital technology, and the underutilization of local wisdom continue to hinder the development of children's literacy and numeracy skills in coastal communities. This community service program aimed to improve children's reading, writing, and numeracy skills through community-based mentoring that integrates digital learning media with Papuan local wisdom. The program was implemented in the coastal area of East Biak District, Biak Numfor Regency, using a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach involving 50 early childhood participants and 30 members of the PAR SM Karmel Bosnik community as local partners. The activities included needs assessment, training on digital learning media, eight mentoring sessions, and program evaluation using pre-tests, post-tests, classroom observations, and paired-sample t-tests. The results demonstrated substantial improvements in reading (96%), writing (36.8%), and numeracy (10%), with statistical analysis confirming significant gains across all assessed competencies after the intervention. In addition, the program strengthened the capacity of community partners to implement interactive, technology-supported, and culturally contextualized learning practices. These findings indicate that community-based mentoring integrating digital media and Papuan local wisdom is an effective strategy for strengthening children's literacy and numeracy skills in coastal areas and has strong potential for adaptation in communities with similar educational contexts.

Abstract

Toddlers are a population group vulnerable to nutritional and health problems. The prevalence of wasting among toddlers in Ogan Ilir Regency remains relatively high. One strategy to support improvements in children's nutritional status is the utilization of local food resources as healthy snacks. This community service program was conducted in Ibul Besar I Village from June to October 2025. Preliminary observations revealed that local foods had not been utilized as snacks for toddlers, while the consumption of unhealthy snacks was relatively high due to their easy accessibility within the village. In addition, mothers of toddler had never received nutrition education or practical training on the preparation of snacks based on local food resources. This program aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of mothers of toddler through nutrition education and hands-on training in the preparation of puanchi bar, an innovative nutritious snack made from snakehead fish flour and developed as an alternative supplementary food for young children. The product contains essential nutrients that support child growth and development. A total of 24 mothers participated in activities consisting of educational sessions, demonstrations, and practical training. Program evaluation was conducted through pre- and post-intervention knowledge assessments using a questionnaire, as well as observation of participants’ skills during the practical sessions. The results showed a significant improvement in mothers’ knowledge regarding healthy snacks and the utilization of local food resources (p0.001). In addition, all participants were able to prepare puanchi bar independently and actively engaged throughout the program. The intervention not only enhanced participants’ knowledge but also strengthened their skills in utilizing local food resources to prepare nutritious snacks for toddlers.

Abstract

Iloheluma Village, Bone Bolango Regency, possesses considerable agricultural potential through corn and patchouli commodities; however, limited post-harvest processing, weak MSME management, and low product diversification have constrained local value creation. This community service program aimed to strengthen the village creative economy through the integration of corn and patchouli cultivation, product processing, business capacity building, and agrotourism-oriented promotion. The program was implemented over 45 days using a participatory approach involving lecturers, students, village government, farmer groups, and MSME actors through training, field demonstrations, mentoring, and evaluation activities. The results indicate improvements in community capacity regarding cultivation practices, product packaging and branding, digital promotion, and simple business bookkeeping. The program also encouraged the utilization of corn and patchouli as strategic resources for educational agrotourism and local economic development. Furthermore, the integration of agricultural production, product value addition, and community-based tourism strengthened collaboration among local stakeholders and provided an initial foundation for sustainable village economic development. The program demonstrates that an integrated agrotourism-based empowerment approach can support the development of rural creative economies through the optimization of local agricultural resources.

Abstract

Collaboration between schools and communities plays an important role in supporting the improvement of the quality of basic education. However, community involvement in education is still largely limited to administrative activities and has not fully developed into participatory collaboration in supporting learning processes and school development. This community service activity aimed to strengthen collaboration between schools and communities through a participatory scientific seminar in supporting inclusive and sustainable basic education. The activity was conducted on April 30, 2026, in Gorontalo involving 32 participants consisting of lecturers, postgraduate students, principals, teachers, and education communities. The activity was implemented through seminar sessions, interactive discussions, reflective dialogue, and collaborative problem-solving related to educational issues. Evaluation was conducted using participant observation, reflection sheets, and participant response questionnaires. The results showed that 87% of participants actively participated in discussions, 84% experienced increased understanding regarding school–community collaboration, and 90% gave positive responses to the participatory seminar model. In addition, the activity generated several strategic recommendations related to participatory learning, parental involvement, collaborative school governance, and the optimization of school facilities as educational and social centers. Therefore, participatory scientific seminars can serve as an effective community service model in strengthening collaborative educational ecosystems in basic education.

Abstract

The increasing volume of household waste and the low level of public awareness regarding waste management have become environmental problems in Ampana District. This community service activity aimed to improve community knowledge and awareness in managing household waste through the application of the 3R principles (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). The program involved 45 participants consisting of community members and local officials. The activity was conducted using a participatory counseling approach through interactive lectures, group discussions, and demonstrations of recycled products. The implementation stages included preparation through field observation and coordination with stakeholders, program implementation using pretest and counseling sessions, and evaluation through posttest questionnaires to measure changes in participants’ knowledge and behavior. The results showed that participants’ knowledge regarding waste management increased from 55% to 90%, while household waste sorting behavior increased from 40% to 87%. These findings indicate that 3R-based counseling was effective, within the scope of this activity, in improving environmental awareness and encouraging community participation in sustainable waste management. In addition, the activity opened opportunities for the development of community-based recycling initiatives such as waste banks and household-scale recycling businesses.

Abstract

The Makassar City Islands, particularly the Spermonde Archipelago, rely heavily on marine transportation to support tourism activities. The increasing number of tourist visits has not been accompanied by adequate safety literacy, as reflected in the limited understanding of boat operators and tourists regarding maritime safety procedures, the inconsistent use of safety equipment, and the lack of continuous safety education. This community service program aimed to strengthen maritime tourism transportation safety literacy through a participatory educational approach integrating conceptual learning, interactive discussions, and practical safety simulations. The program involved 57 participants consisting of boat operators, tourism awareness groups, domestic tourists, and local government representatives. Program effectiveness was evaluated using pre-tests, post-tests, observations, and participant feedback. The findings revealed a 50% increase in participants' knowledge of maritime safety principles, safety equipment utilization, and emergency response procedures. Observations also indicated improvements in participants' practical skills, safety awareness, and engagement throughout the learning process. Beyond enhancing individual capacity, the program fostered stakeholder collaboration to support the development of a sustainable safety culture in marine tourism transportation across the Makassar City Islands.

Abstract

Reading literacy is a fundamental competency that supports students' academic achievement and lifelong learning. However, the rapid advancement of digital technology has changed students' reading habits, while many elementary school students still experience difficulties in identifying main ideas, interpreting information, and comprehending both printed and digital texts. Initial observations at SD Muhammadiyah 16 Palembang also indicated that teachers required greater capacity to implement structured reading instruction. This community service program aimed to improve students' reading literacy and strengthen teachers' instructional competence through comprehensive reading strategy training. The program employed a participatory approach consisting of needs assessment, interactive training, guided practice, and continuous mentoring, emphasizing pre-reading, while-reading, and post-reading strategies integrated with printed and digital learning resources. The program resulted in improved student engagement, enhanced reading comprehension skills, and increased teacher competence in implementing comprehensive reading strategies. In addition, practical instructional guidelines were developed to support sustainable literacy practices at the school level. These findings demonstrate that comprehensive reading strategy training is an effective approach to strengthening reading literacy and fostering a sustainable literacy culture in elementary schools.
