This study explores the portrayal of women's existence in the 2023 series Gadis Kretek through the lens of Simone de Beauvoir's existentialist feminism. The narrative follows Dasiyah, a woman striving for autonomy and self-determination within the patriarchal constraints of the kretek industry and broader societal norms. Employing a descriptive-qualitative analysis, this research adopts an existentialist feminist framework to examine the series. Data were obtained through observation of the series and literature review relevant to the concept of women's existence in feminist theory. The analysis is conducted by examining how the female characters in Gadis Kretek are constructed in the narrative and how they negotiate their existential freedom. The results show that Dasiyah experiences various forms of limitations due to the patriarchal social structure, but she also shows resistance by asserting her existence as a free and independent individual. Her struggle reflects de Beauvoir's idea of how women can escape from the status of the Other and achieve authentic existence.

Film is a powerful medium in shaping, maintaining, or challenging social and ideological structures. Tuhan, Izinkan Aku Berdosa (2024), directed by Hanung Bramantyo, adapts the controversial novel Tuhan, Izinkan Aku Menjadi Pelacur! by Muhidin Dahlan, critically examining the reproduction of power and religious ideology. This study analyzes how religious ideology and power structures are represented and reinforced through narratives, dialogue, and visual elements. Using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) by Teun A. van Dijk, the research focuses on social context, particularly how power dynamics and religious ideology shape societal structures and individual agency. Adopting a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through documentation techniques, including dialogue transcription, visual analysis, and contextual interpretation. Findings indicate that religious ideology functions as a tool of social control, where religious leaders, such as Abu Darda, maintain dominance and suppress dissent. The protagonist, Kiran, initially conforms to religious norms but faces injustices—sexual violence, betrayal, and abuse—that push her to challenge religious structures. Her choice to enter prostitution is not mere moral decline but an act of resistance against religious hypocrisy and power reproduction. This study concludes that film effectively constructs and critiques dominant ideological narratives, highlighting the intersection of gender, power, and religious discourse while illustrating the stigmatization and oppression of those who deviate from religious norms. These findings contribute to media and cultural studies by emphasizing how religious ideology in film reinforces or critiques power structures in society. by emphasizing how religious ideology in film can either reinforce or critique power structures in society.

This study aims to describe the ability of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Bungku Selatan in writing procedure texts. Using a quantitative descriptive method with a field research approach, this study involved 75 students as the total sample. The data were collected through a written test in which students were assigned to compose a procedure text based on the given theme. The assessment focused on four aspects: title, structural completeness, linguistic features, and writing conventions. The findings show that 60% of the students (45 learners) achieved the minimum mastery criterion of 66%, while 40% (30 learners) did not meet the standard. The classical mastery level also did not reach the expected threshold of 85%. The analysis of each aspect reveals that the title aspect achieved the highest mastery (100%), whereas the structural completeness (56%), linguistic features (72%), and writing conventions (62.67%) remain below the expected level. Overall, the results indicate that students’ ability to write procedure texts is still insufficient, particularly in applying structure, linguistic features, and proper writing mechanics. These findings suggest the need for improved instructional strategies and more intensive writing practice to enhance students’ proficiency in writing procedure texts.
