Abstract

Self-control is an individual’s ability to regulate behavior, thoughts, and emotions so that they align with social situational demands, and low self-control is often associated with maladaptive behaviors, one of which is phubbing, namely the tendency to ignore an interlocutor in face-to-face interactions due to focusing on smartphone use. This study aimed to examine the relationship between self-control and phubbing behavior among university students in early adulthood. A quantitative approach with a correlational design was employed, involving 80 university students aged 18–25 years in Indonesia who used smartphones for at least five hours per day, selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected via an online survey using the Self-Control Scale and the Phubbing Scale, both of which have demonstrated validity and reliability, and were analyzed using Pearson’s correlation test. The results showed a significant negative relationship between self-control and phubbing behavior (r = −0.434; p < .001), indicating that the higher the level of self-control possessed by students, the lower their tendency to engage in phubbing in social interactions. These findings confirm that self-control plays an important role in reducing phubbing behavior among university students in early adulthood and underscore the need to develop self-control abilities through psychological interventions and digital literacy education in order to improve the quality of students’ social interactions amid the rapid development of communication technologies.

Abstract

Inter-economic marriages, characterized by pronounced disparities in income, education, occupation, or assets between spouses, pose unique challenges to household harmony in contemporary Indonesia. This study examines the lived experiences of such couples, their adaptation strategies, and Islamic scholarly perspectives on compatibility (kafa’ah) and maintenance (nafkah). Employing an interpretive phenomenological approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews and participant observation with purposively selected husband–wife pairs married for at least two years, analyzed using thematic content analysis and hermeneutic interpretation, and triangulated with classical fiqh texts and contemporary fatwas. The findings reveal that open communication, self-disclosure, and family resilience mitigate conflicts arising from economic disparities, fostering emotional bonds and mutual empathy despite external pressures such as Long Distance Marriage (LDM). From an Islamic legal perspective, nafkah extends beyond minimal provisions (food, clothing, and shelter) to contextually appropriate support (ma’ruf), as reflected in Q.S. Al-Baqarah/2:233, while kafa’ah harta emphasized to varying degrees across Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi’i, and Hanbali madhhabs—ultimately prioritizes religious piety over wealth to prevent discord. The study concludes that couples in inter-economic marriages can achieve sakinah, mawaddah, and rahmah by aligning their roles flexibly and upholding shari’ah-guided equity, demonstrating that economic disparities need not undermine marital stability when countered with proactive adaptation, and offering insights for premarital counseling in diverse Muslim societies.

Abstract

TikTok use that highlights idealized lifestyles and financial achievements often triggers upward social comparison, which may increase financial anxiety among young users. This study aimed to test the relationship between upward social comparison on TikTok and financial anxiety among Gen Z. The study involved 206 respondents aged 18–27 years who were active TikTok users. Data were collected via Google Forms using the Iowa-Netherlands Comparison Orientation Measure (INCOM) to assess social comparison orientation and the Financial Anxiety Scale (FAS) to evaluate levels of financial anxiety. The main findings showed a positive and significant relationship between upward social comparison and financial anxiety (r = 0.684; p = 0.000), indicating that the greater an individual’s tendency to compare themselves with other users perceived as superior, the higher the financial anxiety they experience. These results confirm that social comparison dynamics on TikTok constitute an important psychological factor that should be considered in prevention and intervention efforts targeting financial anxiety among young people.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low ability of eighth-grade students at SMP Swasta Cenderamata to write expository texts, particularly in understanding text structure, developing logical arguments, and using effective language. This study aimed to analyze students’ expository text writing ability through the implementation of a practice-based learning method. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach with a field research design, involving all eighth-grade students at SMP Swasta Cenderamata as participants. Data were collected through observations of the learning process, interviews with teachers and students, and documentation of students’ written work, and were analyzed using an interactive analysis model consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that implementing a practice-based learning method significantly improved students’ expository text writing ability, as reflected in their progress in formulating a thesis, developing arguments, and writing reiteration in accordance with the structure of expository texts. In addition, students’ engagement and motivation in writing instruction increased because they were directly involved in each stage of the writing process, from planning to revision. Nevertheless, several challenges remained, including limited vocabulary, difficulties in developing ideas in depth, and mechanical errors in writing. This study concludes that a practice-based learning method is effective and relevant for improving students’ expository text writing skills, and it underscores the importance of practice-oriented writing instruction to enhance the quality of Indonesian language learning processes and outcomes.

Abstract

This study was motivated by students’ low causal thinking skills in history learning and the limited availability of e-teaching materials specifically designed to train these skills. The study aimed to develop e-teaching materials based on the Indonesian Independence Proclamation content to train the causal thinking ability of students at SMAN 8 Padang. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE model, which comprised analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The research subjects included two material expert lecturers, two teaching-material expert lecturers, one history teacher, and 36 eleventh-grade students; data were collected using validation sheets and analyzed through qualitative and quantitative approaches. The results showed that the development procedure encompassed needs analysis, structural and content design, product development through expert validation, classroom implementation, and an evaluation of effectiveness. The feasibility of the e-teaching materials was categorized as very feasible, with mean ratings of 3.35 from material experts and 3.2 from teaching-material experts, while practicality as assessed by the teacher and students was also categorized as very practical, with mean ratings of 3.9 and 3.55, respectively. The effectiveness of the e-teaching materials was reflected in students’ causal thinking achievement of 87.44%, categorized as very good. The study concludes that the e-teaching materials on the Indonesian Independence Proclamation are very feasible, very practical, and effective for training learners’ causal thinking skills in history learning, and they contribute to the development of more meaningful history learning media oriented toward higher-order thinking skills.

Abstract

Although digital technology has brought major changes to global education, studies that specifically address comparisons of the effectiveness and integration strategies of traditional and digital visual media across geographic contexts with limited infrastructure remain very limited. This study aimed to provide an in-depth analysis of the comparison between traditional and digital visual media, covering their advantages, inherent limitations, and implications for use in both general education and Islamic education settings. The study employed a descriptive-comparative qualitative approach with a literature review design, conducting a systematic analysis of diverse primary and secondary literature published over the past ten years. Data were collected through rigorous literature identification and document classification and were analyzed using a descriptive-comparative method to comprehensively synthesize findings from prior studies. The results showed that traditional visual media remain highly relevant for supporting direct interaction, value internalization, and character formation, whereas digital visual media are superior in enhancing learning motivation and the effectiveness of content delivery through dynamic visualization and high interactivity. In addition, the study identified the risks of technological dependence and declining interest in reading physical books as critical anomalies associated with the use of digital media. These findings contributed substantially to the development of instructional media theory through the formulation of a Hybrid-Visual integration model grounded in Dual Coding Theory. The study concludes that synergy between traditional and digital visual media is essential for holistic learning and suggests that educators develop digital literacy without abandoning a personal and humanistic approach. The implications include recommendations for educational institutions to continue facilitating conventional media use to support affective depth while expanding digital infrastructure that is adaptive to the needs of the digital generation.

Abstract

Western educational paradigms, which dominate schooling in many Muslim-majority contexts including Indonesia, tend to prioritize cognitive and material outcomes at the expense of spiritual, moral, and social development, contributing to ethical erosion among youth. This study addresses this gap by deriving Islamic educational objectives from Surah Luqman (verses 12–19) as a holistic framework for cultivating insān kāmil (perfect humans), with particular emphasis on tawḥīd (monotheism), morality, and social responsibility. Employing a qualitative library research method, primary data from the Qur’an and classical and contemporary tafsīr were analyzed using thematic content analysis, while secondary sources consisted of post-2000 literature on Islamic pedagogy. Through coding, categorization, interpretation, and cross-validation, the analysis identifies three interconnected dimensions: tawḥīd as an epistemological core fostering devotion and resilience; morality expressed through filial piety (birr al-wālidayn), gratitude, patience, and humility; and social responsibility operationalized through prayer, amr bi-l-maʿrūf wa-nahy ʿan al-munkar (enjoining good and forbidding evil), and courteous conduct. Reflective analysis underscores the contemporary relevance of these Luqmanic principles for Indonesian pesantren and madrasahs, countering secular individualism by informing integrated cognitive–affective–behavioral curricula. The study concludes that embedding educational aims derived from Surah Luqman within Indonesia’s Merdeka Belajar policy framework can enhance students’ moral resilience and offers a value-based alternative to predominantly secular models. The findings contribute to the applied exegesis of the Qur’an in pedagogy and have implications for future empirical interventions and the development of digital tools for value-based Islamic education.

Abstract

The integrity crisis in the modern workforce constitutes a critical challenge in Human Resource Management (HRM) and requires a developmental approach oriented not only toward technical competence but also toward strengthening the moral dimension. This study aimed to analyze the impact of pesantren values on optimizing community HRM quality and to formulate a value-based HRM model relevant to the needs of the contemporary workplace. The study employed a qualitative case study with a phenomenological approach, in which data were obtained through interviews and observations and then analyzed through a systematic data-reduction process. The findings showed that the internalization of istiqomah, riyadhah, and kemandirian within the pesantren environment transformed individual character and was positively correlated with levels of discipline and loyalty at work. The researcher identified a “Value-Based HRM” model that synergizes technical competence with professional ethics, positioning the pesantren as a strategic incubator for forming human resources with integrity. This study underscores that integrating a value-based model into formal HRM policies is crucial for addressing problems of morality and productivity in both the public and private sectors, while strengthening the ethical foundation of HRM governance in the long term.

Abstract

Final-year university students often face high academic pressure, placing them at risk of academic burnout that can hinder learning processes and thus requires strong resilience. In this context, peer social support is assumed to play an important role in strengthening students’ capacity to cope with academic pressures. This study aimed to examine the relationship between peer social support and academic resilience among students experiencing academic burnout. The study employed a quantitative survey approach involving 171 participants who completed the Student Social Support Scale (SSSS) and the Academic Resilience Scale (ARS). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, and Spearman’s rho correlation in Jamovi. The results showed that peer social support had a positive and significant relationship with academic resilience, indicating that the higher the support received from peers, the higher students’ academic resilience in coping with academic burnout. These findings underscore the importance of peer social support as a protective factor that helps students endure and recover from academic pressure and may serve as a basis for developing mentoring programs and strengthening social networks in higher education settings.

Abstract

Migrant students are a group vulnerable to psychological challenges arising from adaptation to a new environment, separation from family, and changes in social networks, which can elicit feelings of loneliness when needs for emotional closeness and social support are not met. One psychological factor presumed to contribute to loneliness among migrant students is self-esteem, defined as an individual’s evaluation of their worth and value. This study aimed to examine the relationship between self-esteem and loneliness among migrant students. Using a quantitative correlational method, the study involved 355 participants aged 18–25 years who were studying at Universitas X. Self-esteem was measured using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and loneliness was measured using the UCLA Loneliness Scale Version 3. Because the data were not normally distributed, Spearman’s rho correlation was used for analysis. The results showed a strong negative relationship between self-esteem and loneliness (r = -0.873; p < 0.001), indicating that higher self-esteem was associated with lower loneliness among migrant students, and vice versa. Descriptive analysis also indicated that self-esteem was in the moderate category, whereas loneliness was in the high category. These findings underscore the importance of attending to self-esteem in understanding and reducing loneliness among migrant students facing adaptation pressures in higher education settings.
