Abstract

Although the cultic veneration of religious figures in popular culture has become increasingly widespread, studies that specifically examine the relevance of Mohamed Abid al-Jabiri’s notion of rational ethics for reading ethical representations in popular media remain limited. This study aimed to identify how the Arab ethical values critiqued by al-Jabiri, including Persian, Greek, Sufi, pre-Islamic Arab heritage, and Qur’anic ethics are mobilized in the narrative elements, characterization, and dialogue of the film Bidaah. An interpretive qualitative method was employed, using film text analysis as the primary data source and al-Jabiri’s works as the theoretical foundation. Data collection involved repeated viewing, scene coding, and triangulation of library sources, which were then thematically analyzed to map the ethical configurations presented in the film. The findings indicate that Bidaah exhibits problematic ethical patterns warned against by al-Jabiri, including total submission associated with Persian heritage, a tendency toward elitist rationality reflecting the influence of Greek heritage, and self-annihilating practices in Sufi variants, alongside forms of resistance rooted in Arab chivalric ethics and Qur’anic ethics of good deeds. In conclusion, al-Jabiri’s framework of rational ethics proves relevant for popular culture analysis and is capable of explaining the symbolic and social mechanisms that sustain the cultic elevation of religious figures. The implications of this study include strengthening the theoretical grounding for research in ethical philosophy and film studies, as well as offering practical recommendations for enhancing religious and media literacy and reinforcing the accountability of charismatic figures in the public sphere.

Abstract

Islamic education is one of the educational systems with deep historical roots since the early development of Islam and has undergone dynamic transformations in line with the evolution of Islamic civilization over time. This study aims to examine and analyze the historical foundations of Islamic education from the classical to the modern period, as well as to review the thought of key Islamic and Western educational figures who have influenced educational development. This research is a literature study employing a qualitative approach with a library research design that examines, reviews, and analyzes literature sources in the form of books, journals, and research articles related to the historical foundations of Islamic education (classical–modern) and Islamic–Western educational thinkers. The findings show that the historical foundations of Islamic education have experienced significant growth and development that can be mapped into three major periods: (1) the classical period (650–1250 CE), when Islamic education was carried out through the dakwah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his Companions; (2) the middle period (1250–1800 CE), when various aspects of life in the Islamic world, including education, reached a golden age; and (3) the modern period (1800 CE–present), when Islamic education has developed rapidly through integration with Western sciences and technology. In addition, this study identifies key figures in the Islamic educational tradition, such as Ibnu Sina, Al-Farabi, Al-Ghazali, Ibnu Khaldun, and Al-Khawarizmi, as well as Western educational thinkers such as Jean Piaget, John Locke, Maria Montessori, Friedrich Froebel, and John Dewey, who have contributed to shaping educational discourse and practice. The study concludes that a comprehensive understanding of the historical foundations and the thought of Islamic and Western educational figures is essential for enriching the development of contemporary Islamic educational theory and practice, particularly in formulating educational models that are responsive to contemporary demands while remaining firmly rooted in the Islamic scholarly tradition.

Abstract

Cultural transformation driven by globalization and modernization has profoundly affected multiple spheres of life, including Islamic education, compelling Islamic educational institutions to adapt in order to remain relevant amid rapid advances in science, technology, and information flows. At the same time, these modernization pressures pose challenges to preserving the core Islamic values that underpin the philosophy and practice of Islamic education. This study examines the dynamics of cultural transformation in Islamic teaching and analyzes strategies by which Islamic institutions can balance modernization imperatives with the preservation of Islamic values. Employing a library research methodology, it systematically reviews books, scholarly journal articles, and relevant documents on Islamic education and cultural change. The findings indicate that Islamic educational transformation need not be framed as a dichotomy between modernity and tradition; instead, it can adopt an integrative approach that selectively incorporates modern values and practices aligned with Islamic principles. Through such an approach, Islamic education can cultivate generations who are faithful and ethically grounded while also possessing the intellectual and social competencies needed to navigate global challenges without losing their Islamic identity.

Abstract

Emerging adulthood is a developmental phase spanning ages 18–25 that is characterized by major transitions in education, career, and interpersonal relationships, during which individuals often experience a “feeling in-between” state—no longer adolescents yet not fully established as adults. High demands for exploration and life instability in this phase render emerging adults vulnerable to mental health problems, one of which is intolerance of uncertainty. This study aimed to examine whether perceived social support plays a role in intolerance of uncertainty among emerging adults. A quantitative method with a correlational approach was employed using simple linear regression analysis. The participants were 163 males and females aged 18–25 years residing in the Jabodetabek area. The instruments used were the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale–12 and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. The findings indicated a positive role of perceived social support in intolerance of uncertainty among emerging adults (r = .245; p < .05), with a contribution of 6%, meaning that the higher the level of perceived social support experienced by individuals, the higher their intolerance of uncertainty. This result is inconsistent with previous studies reporting a negative role of perceived social support in intolerance of uncertainty, but aligns with other findings indicating that perceived social support exerts limited influence on intolerance of uncertainty. Overall, this study provides empirical insights into the dynamics of the relationship between perceived social support and intolerance of uncertainty among emerging adults in urban areas of Indonesia and underscores the need to consider contextual factors when interpreting the role of social support in mental health.

Abstract

Social skills are a crucial aspect of adolescent development and are presumed to be associated with the intensity of playing simulation games. This study aimed to determine the effect of simulation game playing intensity on adolescents’ social skills. The participants were 242 adolescents aged 12–21 years who actively played simulation games such as Roblox, The Sims, and Minecraft (roleplay/simulation modes). The study employed a quantitative method with simple linear regression analysis. The results showed that the intensity of playing simulation games had a significant effect on adolescents’ social skills (p = 0.000). The coefficient of determination of 0.518 indicated that simulation game playing intensity contributed 51.8% to adolescents’ social skills, meaning that more than half of the variance in social skills could be explained by simulation game playing intensity, while the remaining 48.2% was influenced by other factors beyond the scope of this study. In addition, the correlation obtained was strong and positive (r = 0.601), indicating that the higher the intensity of playing simulation games, the higher the adolescents’ social skills. These findings affirm a meaningful relationship between simulation game playing intensity and adolescents’ social skills and suggest that patterns of simulation game play need to be taken into account when understanding the dynamics of social skills development in this age group.

Abstract

This article is motivated by the dominance of historiographical narratives that interpret the Pemerintahan Revolusioner Republik Indonesia (PRRI, Revolutionary Government of the Republic of Indonesia) solely as a separatist rebellion, without taking into account the context of center–region inequality and the dynamics of regional nationalism in the post-independence period. The study aims to analyze the role of the Reuni Divisi Banteng (Banteng Division Reunion) in the formation of the Dewan Banteng (Banteng Council) as the embryo of PRRI in West Sumatra and to explain the political, social, and ideological motives underlying it. Using a historical method with a sociological–critical approach and library research, the study follows the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, with its analysis supported by grievance theory and a center–region inequality framework. The findings show that the establishment of the Dewan Banteng was rooted in the structural marginalization of former Banteng Division fighters and development disparities concentrated in Java. PRRI emerged as an articulation of collective discontent over the neglect of demands for regional autonomy and equitable development, while also gaining broad support from civil society and nationalist leaders. The study argues that PRRI was an expression of regional nationalism with a corrective character toward the centralization of power, rather than an attempt to secede from the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. The conclusion challenges the labeling of PRRI merely as a rebellion and underscores the need to reassess Indonesia’s political history narrative. The findings imply the importance of historiographical revision and the strengthening of decentralization as a form of justice, recognition of regional contributions, and consolidation of post-independence national integration.

Abstract

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events that may have long-term impacts on individuals’ psychological development, including their emotion regulation abilities in adulthood. This study aimed to examine the relationship between adverse childhood experiences and emotion regulation among young adults. A non-experimental quantitative approach with a correlational design was employed. The participants were 375 young adults recruited through purposive sampling. Data were collected online using the Indonesian version of the World Health Organization Adverse Childhood Experiences International Questionnaire (WHO ACE-IQ) to measure adverse childhood experiences and an emotion regulation scale to assess emotion regulation abilities. Data were analyzed using Spearman’s correlation test. The results showed a significant positive relationship between adverse childhood experiences and emotion regulation (r = 0.445; p < 0.001) with a moderate effect size, indicating that the higher the level of adverse childhood experiences, the higher the emotion regulation scores among young adults. These findings suggest that traumatic experiences in childhood are associated with individuals’ emotion regulation patterns in adulthood, highlighting the need for serious attention as well as preventive efforts and early interventions targeting adverse childhood experiences.

Abstract

Recent phenomena indicate that many final-year university students remain insufficiently prepared for the transition to the workforce despite having internship experience, underscoring the importance of internal factors such as career planning in shaping work readiness. This study aimed to examine the relationship between career planning and work readiness among final-year students with internship experience. A quantitative, non-experimental correlational design was employed, using purposive sampling to recruit 192 final-year students from various faculties who had completed an internship. The instruments used were a career planning scale adapted from Gould and a work readiness scale developed by Indah based on Pool and Sewell’s theory, with data collected online via a digital questionnaire. The analysis showed a significant positive relationship between career planning and work readiness, rs(190) = .59, p < .001, indicating that the higher the level of career planning possessed by students, the higher their work readiness. Thus, it can be concluded that the relationship between the two variables is more strongly influenced by internal factors than by demographic characteristics or internship experience, highlighting the importance of strengthening career planning in preparing students for the transition to the world of work.

Abstract

Generation Z is entering early adulthood amid complex and dynamic psychological challenges in the digital era, yet is often stigmatized as a “strawberry generation” perceived as fragile, sensitive, and unable to withstand life’s pressures. Social identity as part of a social group has the potential to serve as a source of strength and psychological support, but its association with psychological resilience among Generation Z in Indonesia has not been extensively examined. This study aimed to determine the significant relationship between social identity and psychological resilience among early adult members of Generation Z. A quantitative approach with a correlational design was employed, involving 535 Generation Z individuals aged 18–25 years residing in the Jabodetabek area (Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi). Data were collected online using the 11-item Social Identity Scale to measure social identity and the 25-item Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale to measure psychological resilience. The main data analysis was conducted using Spearman’s rank correlation, while additional analysis employed Pearson’s correlation after classical assumption testing (validity, reliability, normality, and linearity). The results showed that respondents had moderate to high levels of social identity (M = 53.90; SD = 8.64) and high levels of psychological resilience (M = 100.07; SD = 12.21). Furthermore, a significant positive relationship was found between social identity and psychological resilience among early adult members of Generation Z, indicating that a strong and positive social identity can enhance individuals’ resilience in facing pressure, stress, and various life challenges.

Abstract

The issue of adolescent promiscuity has received considerable scholarly attention, yet studies that specifically examine the role of parents in instilling Islamic religious values as an effort to address adolescent promiscuity in the context of religious rural communities remain relatively limited. This study aimed to analyze the parental role, parents’ strategic position, and the obstacles they face in instilling Islamic religious values to counter adolescent promiscuity in Lumpo Village, IV Jurai Subdistrict, Pesisir Selatan Regency. A qualitative approach with a case study design was employed, involving parents of adolescents, adolescents themselves, as well as community and religious leaders selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, and were analyzed using the interactive analysis model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that parents play a role in instilling Islamic religious values through providing religious advice, habituating worship practices, modeling appropriate behavior, and monitoring adolescents’ social interactions. Parents occupy a central position as the primary controllers of adolescent behavior; however, the effectiveness of this role is influenced by the quality of interaction and communication within the family. The study also identifies several obstacles, including parents’ limited time, the influence of peer social environments, and the rapid development of technology and social media. These findings contribute to the development of family education theory in Islam and role theory by deepening understanding of parental roles in religious rural communities, while underscoring the importance of parental consistency and role modeling as well as synergy among families, communities, and educational institutions in addressing adolescent promiscuity.
