Abstract

Food security has become a primary concern in Indonesia, as the growing demand for food increasingly collides with the limited availability of agricultural land and the challenges of conventional farming. One innovative solution being developed is hydroponic cultivation, a soil-less farming technique that utilizes alternative media and nutrient-enriched water. This study aims to revitalize the hydroponic system in Kepatihan Village, Sidoarjo, through a community training program on pakcoy cultivation using recycled materials, particularly plastic bottles and PVC pipes. The program was implemented using a management approach consisting of planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation stages. The results indicate a significant improvement in participants’ knowledge and understanding of hydroponic farming after the training sessions. Community members were not only able to assemble simple systems made from recycled materials but also successfully cultivated pakcoy sustainably using PVC pipes and repurposed plastic bottles as growing media. Participants demonstrated creativity and innovation by modifying the design of the recycled bottles, reflecting a deeper comprehension of hydroponic principles while promoting recycling practices and reducing plastic waste. Despite the promising outcomes, several challenges were identified, such as pest attacks, nutrient solution contamination, and the need for regular maintenance to achieve optimal yields. Overall, this study demonstrates that hydroponic farming based on recycled materials is not only environmentally friendly and cost-efficient but also represents an inclusive, innovative, and sustainable urban farming practice. Therefore, it can serve as a practical solution to strengthen household food security while fostering community participation in developing modern agricultural systems in urban areas.

Abstract

This community service report evaluates the implementation of the 15-Minute Reading Movement at SMP Yakha Garut as a response to the low literacy awareness in Indonesia. Global data from UNESCO and PISA surveys show that Indonesia ranks worryingly low in literacy. The School Literacy Movement (GLS), regulated by the Ministry of Education and Culture, was introduced as a structured effort to foster a reading culture among students. This community service aims to analyze the impact of the specific literacy program implemented at SMP Yakha Garut on students' literacy awareness, focusing on its psychological, cognitive, and sociolinguistic effects. A descriptive quantitative approach is used, adopting Kirkpatrick’s evaluation framework, which includes four levels: participant reaction, learning, behavior change, and final outcomes. Data were collected through questionnaires distributed to students as respondents. The findings indicate that the consistent implementation of the 15-Minute Reading Movement, based on the habit-forming principle of making reading activities enjoyable and easily accessible, successfully increased students’ reading interest. Furthermore, there was a significant improvement in text comprehension and students' confidence in interacting with books. The success of this program highlights the importance of comprehensive school ecosystem support, from strong policies to the role of teachers as role models in implementing a literacy culture. These findings also demonstrate that school literacy programs can positively impact students’ literacy awareness and contribute to the development of a better reading culture in the future.

Abstract

This Community Service Programme addresses the theme of Empowering Beginner Communities (EBC), primarily focusing on the implementation of an initiative titled “Innovative Downstream Production of Nile Tilapia in Kanjilo Village as a Driver of Local Economy in Gowa Regency.” The objective of this programme is to enhance the capacity, skills, and productivity of Nile tilapia farmers through the adoption of more modern, efficient, and innovative technologies. Currently, the practices of tilapia farming in Kanjilo Village are largely reliant on traditional methods, which prove to be less effective. This results in suboptimal harvests, relatively high production costs, and low operational efficiency, thereby restricting the profits available to the community. To tackle these challenges, the programme introduces several cutting-edge aquaculture technologies. Firstly, the use of round tarpaulin ponds offers more efficient land utilisation, ease of management, and a high success rate. Secondly, the implementation of a biofloc system helps maintain water quality while accelerating fish growth. Thirdly, the application of nano-oxygen technology enhances dissolved oxygen levels, promoting healthier, stronger, and more productive fish. Through this combination of technologies, it is anticipated that the aquaculture system can be significantly improved, leading to quicker harvests, reduced operational costs, and increased income for fish farmers. In addition to the technical aspects of production, the programme also includes training in digital marketing strategies. This training aims to broaden the marketing reach of Nile tilapia products via online platforms, targeting consumers in Eastern Indonesia, a region with substantial potential yet to be fully tapped. By leveraging digital media, entrepreneurs can access a wider market, enhance product value, build local brands, and strengthen distribution networks. Consequently, this programme is expected to foster sustainable economic transformation in Kanjilo Village.

Abstract

This community service program, focusing on Entrepreneurship Education, is designed to foster a new generation of independent, science- and technology-based entrepreneurs. The theme was chosen based on the current social reality, where the high number of workers is not commensurate with the availability of jobs, thus triggering rising unemployment rates. The program's partner, SMK Negeri 2 Jakarta, faces major challenges in the form of limited extracurricular activities that can support the development of students' entrepreneurial spirit, as well as students' limited knowledge and skills in understanding the business world comprehensively. This condition results in a low number of graduates choosing entrepreneurship as a career path. Therefore, the goal of this program is to improve entrepreneurial competency among students, with the specific goal of forming a community of independent students with the practical skills to manage their own businesses. Activities include seminars, training, and intensive entrepreneurial mentoring with SMK Negeri 2 Jakarta as a partner. The program was attended by 110 students and 15 teachers and educational staff. To assess the success of the program, an evaluation was conducted through the distribution of questionnaires to measure participants' level of understanding and by comparing business results before and after the program was implemented. The final results showed a significant increase in students' understanding and entrepreneurial skills, which was reflected in the increase in sales of entrepreneurial products and services in the partner school environment.

Abstract

This study aims to explore and analyze the optimization of innovations in Sunday worship as a strategy to enhance congregational participation in ministry at GKSI Bukit Sion Bongkok. The research background is based on the low level of active involvement among congregants, despite the church having sufficient human resources potential. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach, involving in-depth interviews with pastors, congregants, and ministry teams, participatory observation during Sunday worship, and analysis of church documents related to ministry programs. The results indicate that implementing worship innovations, such as creative and contextual liturgy development, utilization of audio-visual technology, and participatory approaches in praise, prayer, and sermons, significantly enhances the emotional and spiritual engagement of congregants. Congregants become more motivated to actively participate in various ministry activities, both within and outside the church. Nevertheless, challenges were identified, including resistance from some congregants to change, budget limitations, and the need for continuous ministry team training. Based on these findings, it is recommended that the church implement sustainable strategies, including regular evaluation of worship innovations, training for ministry teams, and adaptation of innovations to cultural and congregational needs. This study provides practical contributions to church ministry development by emphasizing the importance of innovation as a means to strengthen congregational participation and foster an active spiritual community. The findings may also serve as a reference for other churches in designing Sunday worship that is responsive, creative, and capable of encouraging active congregational involvement in ministry.

Abstract

Economic development in the village of Mekar Laras today not only focuses on the modern sector and industrialization but also emphasizes the importance of utilizing sustainable local potentials, one of which is the local wisdom in managing coconut tree resources. This study aims to describe the utilization of coconut trees as local wisdom that plays a role in improving the economy of the Mekar Laras community. The research method used is qualitative with a descriptive approach, involving five informants consisting of community leaders, coconut entrepreneurs, and the general public. Data collection techniques were conducted through in-depth interviews and documentation, which were then analyzed using a thematic approach. The results of the study show that almost all parts of the coconut tree can be optimally utilized, including the fruit, leaves, trunk, and husk. The coconut fruit is processed into coconut milk, oil, jelly, and nata de coco, while the husk and coconut shells are used as fuel, crafts, and eco-friendly briquettes. These processed products are not only used for household needs and traditional ceremonies but also marketed outside the region and exported to neighboring countries. This indicates that coconut plays a strategic role in supporting the community's economy and preserving local culture. The challenges faced include limited technology, aging coconut trees, and minimal government support. Therefore, strategies for developing coconut-based businesses through technological innovation, digital marketing, and strengthening farmer group institutions are essential.

Abstract

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are a crucial pillar of the Indonesian economy, yet they often face significant constraints in marketing and branding, especially in rural areas with limited access. Reliance on traditional word-of-mouth promotion leads to a narrow market reach and low product competitiveness. This community service activity aims to empower the "Budin Keripik" MSME in Tempel Jaya Village, a home-based business operating since 2020, through the implementation of a comprehensive digital branding strategy. The implementation method adopted three main stages: planning, which included field observations and in-depth interviews with the owner to identify key problems such as the lack of visual identity and digital promotion; implementation, which focused on practical interventions like creating banners, designing a logo and packaging labels, setting up social media accounts (Instagram), and registering the business location on Google Maps to increase visibility; and mentoring, which involved technical training on digital promotion, content management, and the use of relevant hashtags to reach a wider audience. The intervention results show a significant positive impact, not only in material aspects like improved product visual appeal and broader marketing reach but also in non-material aspects such as an increase in the business owner's self-confidence in promotion. This initial success proves that digital branding is an effective and applicable strategy for enhancing the competitiveness of traditional MSMEs. However, the sustainability of this program faces challenges like limited capital for production scaling and a need for continuous development of digital literacy, thus requiring further support for long-term local economic strengthening.

Abstract

This study aims to strengthen religious tolerance and moderation in Kineppen Village, Karo Regency, through an educational approach in the implementation of the Community Service Program (KKN) at the State Islamic University of North Sumatra (UINSU). The background of the study stems from the condition of religious diversity in the village, which demands the presence of a moderate and tolerant attitude to create sustainable social harmony. The method used is a qualitative case study approach, where data is obtained through in-depth interviews with community and religious leaders, participatory observation of interfaith activities, and documentation of various educational activities during the KKN program. The results show that KKN students carried out various educational activities such as interfaith dialogue, counseling on the value of tolerance, and participation in joint religious events that functioned as a means of building collective awareness. These activities have been proven to increase community understanding of the importance of a moderate attitude in religion, strengthen communication between residents, and strengthen social ties amidst diversity. Furthermore, this KKN program also created a more inclusive interaction space, thereby reducing the potential for social friction that may have previously arisen due to differences in belief. Thus, the educational approach in KKN UINSU can be seen as an effective strategy for fostering religious tolerance and moderation in a multicultural society. The findings of this study imply that similar programs can be replicated and developed in other regions with similar diversity dynamics to maintain social harmony and strengthen national unity.

Abstract

Community Service Program (KKN) is one of the implementations of the Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi (Three Pillars of Higher Education) which requires students to make a real contribution to society, particularly in strengthening religious moderation and empowering MSMEs in Tanah Merah Village, Perbaungan District, Serdang Bedagai Regency, which faces the challenge of extreme poverty due to the weakening of local economic activity following the construction of a toll road. This study aims to describe and analyze the role of students from the Community Service Program of the State Islamic University of North Sumatra (UINSU) in implementing a spiritual strengthening program based on religious moderation and economic empowerment through MSMEs. The method used is descriptive qualitative with purposive sampling techniques, involving MSME actors, PKK mothers, perwiritan mothers, and MIS students as program targets. Data was obtained through participatory observation, interviews, discussions, and field documentation. The results of the community service showed that the tahsin and perwiritan programs succeeded in strengthening the understanding of inclusive religious moderation, while the empowerment of MSMEs through digital branding, entrepreneurship training, and product innovation such as LEMONERA liquid soap was able to increase local business capacity and open up new economic opportunities. In conclusion, the integration of religious moderation and MSME empowerment has proven to be an effective strategy for reducing extreme poverty, as it not only improves economic resilience but also strengthens social and spiritual cohesion within the community in a sustainable manner.
