Abstract

Abstract. The purpose of this study is to determine the ability of the Madrasah principal in carrying out his duties as the person in charge of the Madrasah in conducting distance learning evaluations. The evaluation process that should be carried out by the Madrasah principal even though it is in the distance category must still be maximized, but sometimes the process cannot be maximized because it is considered new and in the adjustment stage. One of the reasons for this study is to improve the ability of the Madrasah principal as the person in charge of the Madrasah to conduct evaluations through Coaching Strategy. This study was conducted using the Action Research research method involving three Madrasah principals supervised by researchers to obtain accurate data related to the ability of the Madrasah Principal to conduct evaluations. Research data were collected through observation, interviews, filling out questionnaires, and document assessments. Research data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and verification, equipped with quantitative data descriptions of the results of the process assessment and document assessment. The assessment results showed an average score of 72%, including the "good" category and meeting the performance indicators (> 70%). The assessment results in Cycle-II increased by 10% compared to the average score in Cycle-I, which was 72%. Participants generally realized that in order to carry out an evaluation, they must first prepare a program correctly.Keyword: Implementation, Coaching, Strategy, Madrasah, conductive Evaluation

Abstract

Abstract. Movies are a reflection of real-life phenomena, including the language phenomenon. Therefore, using the movie from Disney “Moana”, this research analyzes expressive illocutionary acts. As part of the broader speech act theory, expressive acts convey the speaker's psychological state, such as apologizing, thanking, congratulating, wishing, greeting, and expressing attitudes. This study is a descriptive qualitative study through content analysis, using Moana’s movie script as the primary data source. Data were collected through viewing, note-taking, classification, and analysis. Dell Hymes’ SPEAKING model and lexical analysis via AntConc were the primary data analysis methods. The findings reveal that four types of illocutionary acts appear in the film—expressive, commissive, directive, and representative—while declarative acts are absent. Among 559 illocutionary utterances identified, 34% (190) were expressive. "Attitude" is the most frequent (65%) expressive act, and "wishing" is the least (2%). Expressive acts in all types, except wishing, appeared in both direct and indirect forms, often reflecting complex social roles and intentions. Lexical analysis showed that expressive utterances predominantly used common and grammatically relevant vocabulary, suggesting the film's potential as a practical teaching resource, especially for children. Overall, this study not only deepens the understanding of expressive illocutionary acts in animated films but also highlights their relevance in language education contexts.Keyword: Speech Acts, Expressive Illocutionary Acts, Movies, Word Types

Abstract

Abstract. This study examines how three English professors at Universitas Muhammadiyah Bulukumba in Indonesia apply critical literacy techniques in an EFL classroom. Understanding how these lecturers incorporate critical literacy into their lessons and identifying the difficulties they face are the goals of the study. A thorough understanding of the methods and experiences of 90 students and three lecturers was obtained through interviews and classroom observations. According to the results, the lecturers successfully implemented the five-step instructional framework of critical literacy, which entails encouraging students to read and think critically outside of the text, engaging them in inquiry, and fostering group discussions. The lecturers were able to successfully combine critical literacy techniques with conventional teaching approaches, even though they relied on textbook resources. By asking important questions and encouraging group conversations, they established a space where students felt free to voice their thoughts. In addition to improving pupils' critical thinking abilities, this method encouraged social awareness, tolerance, and accountability. Nevertheless, the study also identifies a number of difficulties in putting critical literacy practices into practice. The main obstacle was the pupils' poor language skills, which prevented them from fully interacting with the materials and debates. A lack of knowledge of critical literacy principles and ingrained teaching approaches also made it challenging to change classroom procedures to include critical literacy. The lecturers also had to deal with limitations relating to insufficient facilities and teaching materials, which reduced the efficacy of their lessons.Keyword: Critical literacy, learning process, higher education

Abstract

Abstract. This study aims to examine the use of linguistic pragmatics in the group discussions on tax strategy and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects among management students. Employing a qualitative research design with a case study approach, data were collected through participant observation, audio-video recordings of group discussions, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. The data were analyzed using Speech Act Theory (Austin and Searle) and Grice’s theory of implicature to interpret implied meanings and communicative strategies within group interactions. Findings reveal that students employ various speech acts, including directives, assertives, expressives, and commissives, which function not only to convey information but also to establish social roles and influence group dynamics. The use of implicature and presupposition facilitates implicit communication, expediting the discussion process and maintaining group harmony. Mitigation and persuasion strategies proved effective in building consensus and managing conflicts. Social position differences within groups influenced pragmatic language use patterns, where dominant members tended to use more direct language, while others preferred subtler and implicit expressions. This study underscores the significance of pragmatic competence as a pivotal communication skill in both academic and professional contexts. It is recommended that educational institutions integrate pragmatic communication training into curricula to enhance students’ effective communication skillsKeyword: linguistic pragmatics, speech acts, implicature, tax strategy, Corporate Social Responsibility, academic communication
