Abstract

In the era of digital disruption, local legends as instruments of moral education have been marginalized by global content that frequently contradicts local wisdom. This study aims to reconstruct a character education model through the synergy of cultural regulation and the digital transformation of Aceh's local legends. The research adopted a qualitative approach, employing library research and content analysis of cultural policy regulations in Aceh alongside digital practices of folk narratives. The findings indicate that the digital transformation of Aceh's legends through interactive media, ethnoliteracy-based applications, and digital repositories effectively enhances the appeal of character education for Generation Z. However, this transformation necessitates the strengthening of cultural regulations to preserve the authenticity of Islamic and Acehnese values within digitized narratives. The reconstruction of character education grounded in local legends, underpinned by robust regulation and technological innovation, generates a learning ecosystem that is both contemporary and firmly rooted in cultural identity. This study underscores the importance of integrating digital-based local content curricula into formal educational institutions in Aceh to ensure sustainable character development.

Abstract

Politeness plays an important role in academic interaction, particularly when students communicate across different interpersonal relationships and cultural contexts. This study investigates politeness strategies employed by Indonesian and Malaysian university students, compares their realizations across academic speech-act situations, and identifies emerging cross-cultural patterns. A qualitative descriptive design within a cross-cultural pragmatic framework was employed. Data were collected through a Discourse Completion Task comprising 20 parallel academic situations involving requests, refusals, disagreement, criticism and evaluation, apologies, gratitude, and digital academic communication. The participants were 20 Indonesian and 18 Malaysian students, generating 760 valid responses for analysis. The responses were coded for directness, mitigation, apology, explanation, deference, appreciation, hedging, alternative offering, and relational orientation. The findings reveal that both groups employed broadly similar pragmatic resources but differed in their degree of elaboration and strategy combination. Indonesian students tended to construct more elaborated responses through mitigation, hedging, appreciation, deference, and relational orientation, whereas Malaysian students demonstrated greater variation between concise and elaborated realizations and more frequent direct formulations. Stronger convergence occurred in apologies and expressions of gratitude. Interlocutor relationships also influenced strategy selection, with lecturer-directed communication showing greater sensitivity to hierarchy than peer interaction. These findings highlight the importance of pragmatic elaboration and relational context in understanding academic politeness across closely related Southeast Asian settings.

Abstract

Advances in digital technology have opened up opportunities to utilize online games as learning media, including Roblox, which features interactive and participatory elements. This study aims to describe the potential of the Roblox game “Sambung Kata Bahasa Indonesia” as a medium for enriching Indonesian vocabulary. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques consisting of observation and questionnaires involving 30 students as supporting data. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results indicate that the word-linking mechanism in the game encourages players to recall existing vocabulary, discover new words, understand relationships between words, and gain exposure to vocabulary through interactions with other players. The questionnaire results indicate that the majority of students have a positive perception of the use of games to support vocabulary enrichment. The research findings suggest that Roblox has the potential to be utilized as a digital linguistic space that supports the enrichment of Indonesian vocabulary in a participatory and contextual manner.

Abstract

Pesantren face the need to preserve the tradition of kitab kuning literacy amid technological developments and changing learning practices. This condition raises the question of how the sorogan method can adapt without losing the epistemological and pedagogical character of the pesantren. This study aims to analyze the transformation of pesantren literacy through the sorogan method in reading kitab kuning at Pondok Pesantren Modern (PPM) Al-Azhar Muncar, Banyuwangi. The study employed a qualitative case study design involving kiai, ustadz, senior santri, and junior santri as research subjects. Data were obtained through participant observation, in-depth interviews, documentation, and field notes, and were analyzed thematically. The findings indicate that sorogan functions as a dynamic literacy practice through individualized reading, direct correction, repetition, textual interpretation, and teacher validation. The transformation also involves increased learner autonomy, annotation practices, digital access to Islamic texts, and the use of digital resources as complementary learning tools. However, digital resources do not replace the pedagogical and epistemic role of the kiai and ustadz. The study contributes to understanding pesantren literacy transformation as an adaptive process that integrates traditional Islamic learning with contemporary literacy practices while maintaining the centrality of teacher-guided knowledge validation.

Abstract

A biography of the modern Javanese period, written in prose, not only tells the story of a person's life but also contains advice, testamentary, and even the identity of the Javanese people. This research aims to reveal that in three biographical texts: Serat Kulapratama, Kyai Pandhanarang, and Lelampahan Dalem Sasradiningrat. This research uses Gadamer's qualitative-hermeneutic design. Data were collected using the Baca, Simak, and Catat (BSC) technique, then analyzed using the Miles & Huberman analysis model, comprising data collection, data reduction, and data presentation. The results are: 1) four categories of testamentary: ethical and moral testamentary, testamentary of responsibility and leadership, Javanese religious and spiritual testamentary, and testamentary of social and cultural life; and 2) Javanese identities are not lost, but are integrated and undergo a reinterpretation of meaning in the present. Individual ideal identities, narima lan prasaja, can be aligned with adaptive and minimalist lifestyles, as well as with efforts to protect the environment and to promote anti-consumption. Collective identities in relationships, gotong royong, and tata krama, are understood through the concepts of harmony, teamwork, empathy, and emotional intelligence. Spiritual identities such as laku prihatin, eling lan waspada are defined as simple lifestyles, the ability to manage stress, and the awareness of worldly temptations, all of which are achieved by always remembering God. Individual, social, and spiritual values are integrated into collective consciousness, inherited, and form the attitude of today's Javanese society, which is more adaptive and reflective. The theoretical implications of this study explain that biography is not just a text that records a person's life, but also a medium for conveying messages and for testamentary purposes, describing the identity of Javanese society from the perspective of the character. In practical terms, this research provides guidelines and mandates from ancestors for the next generation to live by.
