Abstract

The socialization of religious moderation discourse in the digital space requires an effective strategy to engage the Indonesian populace. This study aims to understand the patterns and forms of religious moderation discourse in the Indonesian digital space from 2020 to 2023 and to assess the effectiveness of text mining techniques in this context. A mixed-method approach, combining digital humanities with quantitative text mining and qualitative discourse analysis, was employed to analyze the discourse on religious moderation. The findings indicate that the discourse is dominated by the term "Indonesia," highlighting the intertwining of religious moderation with nationalism. The prominence of "Indonesia" as a keyword suggests that the promotion of religious moderation values aligns closely with nationalistic sentiments. Additionally, the discourse is significantly influenced by political activities, with politicians' pragmatic values serving as a means to reach various segments of society, albeit not as a long-term strategy. To enhance the socialization of religious moderation, it is crucial to evaluate and refine current strategies. Analyzing the patterns and forms of this discourse can provide insights for more effective dissemination in the digital space. This evaluation will help in better promoting the values of religious moderation, ensuring they resonate with broader societal values and reach a wider audience.

Abstract

This study examines the values of local wisdom in Tafsīr al-Bayān by Shodiq Hamzah and its role in promoting peace through tolerance, respect for traditions, and non-violence. Written in Javanese using Latin script while preserving the pesantren Pegon tradition, this work reflects a synthesis of Islamic scholarship and local culture. Employing qualitative library research, the study uses the concept of local wisdom as a framework for peacebuilding within religious moderation. A thematic approach identifies and analyzes Qur’anic verses on peace, interpreted through Shodiq Hamzah’s perspective. The findings reveal that Shodiq Hamzah integrates values like compassion, justice, and wisdom into social interactions while advocating for moderate religious reasoning. His interpretation underscores the importance of local wisdom in resolving interfaith conflicts and fostering harmony. This research enriches the literature by illustrating how religious moderation rooted in local traditions provides a sustainable framework for addressing societal challenges. Tafsīr al-Bayān bridges textual interpretation with cultural context, highlighting the dynamic interplay of Islamic teachings, local wisdom, and contemporary issues, making it a key reference in studies on peace and religious moderation.

Abstract

Religion plays a vital role in human life, yet many studies focus on its consequences rather than the factors influencing religiosity and religious intensification. This study examines the social and economic determinants that shape religious faith through a literature review of 25 relevant studies from the Scopus database. The findings reveal that social factors predominantly drive religious intensification. These factors include the family environment (parental religiosity, closeness to parents), socialization (religious exposure in childhood), and social conditions (trauma, religious freedom, and societal attitudes). Social demographics such as gender, age, and marital status also play a role. Conversely, economic factors tend to negatively influence religious practices. These factors include income levels (relative and absolute), macroeconomic conditions (GDP per capita, trade volume, and travel costs), socio-economic status (employment, education, and social insurance), and economic development in countries of origin and destination. The study highlights the complex interplay between social and economic factors in shaping religiosity and religious intensification. These findings underscore the need for policies that balance social and economic considerations, promote religious pluralism, and address societal vulnerabilities to foster inclusive approaches to managing religious dynamics in diverse communities.

Abstract

The art of Arabic calligraphy (khaṭṭ), regarded as both an aesthetic and scholarly discipline, is grounded in a tradition of scientific lineage (sanad), particularly since the Ottoman (ʿUthmānī) period. However, scholarly exploration of this lineage in the Indonesian context has been notably lacking. This study aims to investigate the dissemination of khaṭṭ sanad from the Ottoman period in Indonesia, with a specific focus on the lineage of the Moroccan calligrapher Belaid Hamidi. Employing library research methods, supported by field observations and interviews with Indonesian calligraphers trained under Hamidi, the study identifies three key findings. First, the foundational transmitters of khaṭṭ sanad during the Ottoman period are as follows: Ḥamdullāh al-Amāsī for Naskh and Thuluth scripts; Ismāʿīl Ḥaqqī Ṣāmī Afandī for Dīwānī and Dīwānī Jaly; Muḥammad Asʿad al-Yāsarī for Taʿlīq; and Mumtāz Bīk for Riqʿah. Second, Belaid Hamidi, who received training from Turkish masters, became the conduit for transmitting these calligraphic lineages to Indonesia. Third, the sanad was disseminated in Indonesia through five of Hamidi's students who studied with him in Egypt: Muhammad Nur (Ponorogo), Nur Hamidiyah (Ngawi), Alim Gema Alamsyah (Tangerang), Khoiru Rofiqi (Aceh), and Shahryanshah Sirojuddin (Kalimantan). These individuals have since extended the reach of the sanad through pesantren and university-based initiatives, contributing to the revitalization and localization of Ottoman calligraphic traditions in Indonesia.

Abstract

Tafsīr al-Khaṭīb al-Makkī by Abdul Hamid al-Minangkabawi is commonly recognized for its dominant features of tafsīr al-fiqhī (jurisprudential exegesis) and tafsīr al-ādabī al-ijtimāʿī (literary-social exegesis). Consequently, the Sufi dimensions of Abdul Hamid’s thought have received relatively limited scholarly attention, despite biographical accounts that highlight his deep engagement with Sufism. This study aims to examine the Sufi exegetical style evident in his interpretation of Sūrat al-Fātiḥah. The research employs a qualitative library-based method with a descriptive-analytical approach. The findings reveal Sufi-oriented interpretations in Tafsīr al-Khaṭīb al-Makkī, specifically in verse 2 (rabb al-ʿālamīn) and verse 5 (iyyāka naʿbudu wa iyyāka nastaʿīn). These verses exemplify features of tafsīr al-ṣūfī al-ishārī, wherein the interpretive meanings transcend the literal (ẓāhir) and are informed by esoteric insights received through spiritual unveiling (kashf) experienced by the Sufi. Nonetheless, these meanings do not necessarily contradict the outward interpretations, allowing for a reconcilable synthesis. This style may also be categorized as taṣawwuf ʿamalī (practical Sufism), whereby Qur’anic verses are understood through subtle inner signs manifest in a Sufi’s personal spiritual experience and devotional practice.

Abstract

This study explores the translation methodologies of three Javanese Qur'an manuscripts: Serat Alpatékah, Kuran Jawi and Kitab Kuran. These manuscripts primarily employ tafsiriyah translation, a method that, while effective linguistically, often overlooks sociocultural aspects that can influence public acceptance of the translation. To address this gap, this research investigates how translation strategies in these regional language Qur'an manuscripts account for the socio-cultural nuances inherent in each translator's local context. The study adopts a descriptive-philological approach, utilizing Javanese words, phrases, and sentences—specifically from the translation of Surah Al-Baqarah—as its primary data. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. The findings reveal that both formal and dynamic equivalence are used to varying degrees within the tafsiriyah translation method, particularly evident in the absorption of Arabic elements into Javanese and in word equivalence. Furthermore, the tafsiriyah translation method demonstrates a greater prevalence of semantic translation strategies compared to structural strategies. Future research should also consider Javanese Qur'an manuscripts written in Javanese script, as they offer valuable insights into the cultural and historical variations embedded within Javanese language varieties.

Abstract

This article examines the contribution of Minangkabau ʿulamāʾ to the historiography of Islam in the Nusantara. It employs a historiographic approach based on a literature review of primary manuscripts preserved at the Faculty of Adab and Humanities, Imam Bonjol State Islamic University, Padang, as well as dissertations and previous scholarly research on intellectual works by Minangkabau scholars. The study finds, first, that Nusantara ʿulamāʾ manuscripts preserve a wealth of intellectual heritage, offering enduring relevance to the development of Islamic scholarship. Second, these manuscripts exemplify the vitality of the Islamic literary tradition and inspire ongoing commitment to writing as a means of preserving knowledge. Third, Minangkabau ʿulamāʾ manuscripts significantly enrich the historiography of Islam in the archipelago, particularly in providing primary source material that illuminates local historical contexts. Lastly, the presence and substance of these texts challenge orientalist claims that depict Nusantara or Malay Islam as peripheral, instead affirming their integral role within the broader Islamic intellectual tradition.

Abstract

This article presents a codicological study of Islamic manuscripts from Dawuhan Village, Banyumas, Central Java, which houses numerous texts alongside annual ritual heirlooms. As part of broader philological and codicological research, the study focuses on reconstructing the texts and examining the physical features of the manuscripts to illuminate their historical, cultural, and intellectual significance. The analysis reveals thirteen manuscripts comprising thirty-five texts, covering a wide range of Islamic disciplines such as Qur’anic interpretation, fiqh, theology (tauḥīd), Sufism, ethics, and history. These texts are written in Arabic, Pegon (Arabic script for the Javanese language), and Javanese with Arabic interlinear translations. The study classifies the manuscripts into three main formats: Arabic texts, Arabic texts with Pegon interlinear translation, and Javanese texts in Pegon script. Decorative elements are generally minimal, though some manuscripts feature artistic renderings, such as wayang-inspired calligraphic designs of the basmalah. Most manuscripts lack explicit authorship or date, with only one colophon identifying the scribe as a student (santri), and a few mentioning the day, month, and year of creation. The poor condition of the manuscripts including damaged bindings, faded ink and missing pages, calls for urgent preservation through restoration, digitization and improved storage. The Dawuhan manuscripts offer critical insights into the integration of Islamic teachings with Javanese cultural traditions and highlight the diversity of Islamic educational practices in the region. As such, they constitute a valuable resource for religious, linguistic, and cultural studies, warranting further scholarly attention and conservation efforts.

Abstract

The writing on liberation theology, which originally developed in the Latin American Christian tradition, has found its resonance in contemporary Islamic thought. K.H. Abdurrahman Wahid is one of the Indonesian Muslim figures who made significant contributions to the development of this discourse. This research aims to analyze the manifestation of liberation theology in Gus Dur's thought as well as identify its distinctive characteristics through the study of the book “Islamku, Islam Anda, Islam Kita” with a qualitative approach and content analysis method. The main findings of the study reveal three distinctive characteristics of Gus Dur's liberation theology: an innovative synthesis of traditional fiqh with modern social justice principles, particularly in his advocacy of minority rights; the reinterpretation of religious texts to challenge authoritarian interpretations, reflected in his defense of religious freedom and democratic values; and the development of an Indonesian model of Islamic pluralism that emphasizes grassroots empowerment. The practical significance of the findings provides a theoretical foundation for interfaith dialogue, minority protection, and democratic reform in contemporary Indonesia. The unique contribution of this research lies in documenting how Gus Dur successfully bridged the gap between Islamic traditionalism and modern progressive thought, creating an Indonesian approach to liberation theology that remains relevant to address contemporary social challenges, and providing a foundation for understanding how religious thought can be mobilized for social transformation in pluralistic societies.
