Abstract

This study examines the systematization of Al-Hikam aphorisms as presented in the Misbah Al-Dzulam, and explores Sheykh Nawawi Al-Bantani’s methodology for interpreting Al-Hikam. Utilizing a descriptive analysis method, the research focuses on the aphorisms of Al-Hikam. The sequence of Al-Hikam is a subject of two contrasting views. The first perspective suggests that despite an apparent randomness, the original sequence of Al-Hikam serves a specific purpose, with a spiritual secret underlying its arrangement. The second view argues that there is no logical connection (irtibath mantiqi) between the initial and subsequent aphorisms. The systematic organization of these aphorisms facilitates to be studied. These divergent viewpoints have led to the creation of two models for studying Al-Hikam’s aphorisms: the tahlili model and the thematic model. The findings of this study reveal that the Misbah Al-Dzulam offers a systematic and categorized approach to Al-Hikam. This approach transforms the perceived randomness of Al-Hikam into a coherent and comprehensive structure, particularly when studied thematically. The tahlili method further enhances the study by integrating language analysis with Sufistic interpretive approaches. This study suggests to include this book in the advanced learning curricula for santri or Ma’had Aly.

Abstract

This study explores the intrinsic values of character education and religious moderation as depicted in the Niti Raja Sasana geguritan, a literary work rich in noble values. The geguritan primarily focuses on leadership concepts, specifically the philosophical notions of “bratanembelas” and “catur pariksa”. These concepts and their inherent values are pertinent to character education and the reinforcement of religious moderation. Given the significant threat posed by radicalism and intolerance to the unity of Indonesia, it is crucial to fortify and internalize character values and religious moderation from an early age. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through interviews and literature reviews. The study found that the leadership concepts in the Niti Raja Sasana geguritan serve as guidelines for leaders, embodying ethical and moral values that align with character education. Furthermore, tolerance, a key aspect of these leadership concepts, is essential for navigating societal dynamics and differences, reflecting the core of religious moderation. Additionally, the geguritan is much embedded with values of character and religious moderation. This study is expected to serve as a reference for the enhancement of character education and religious moderation, contributing to efforts to curb the proliferation of radical and intolerant ideologies.

Abstract

This article examines the manuscript Kamus Mu’jam al-Qur’an, a collection of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. The manuscript is not merely a source of religious texts, but it also embodies certain characteristics that reflects the history, traditions and values encapsulated within it. This study aims to describe the characteristics of the manuscript using philology as the primary method, with codicology and textology as the two main approaches. The codicological aspects of this manuscript indicates that Kamus Mu’jam Al-Qur’an encompasses vocabulary found in the Qur’an. It is written in Arabic and consists of a single piece with 37 pages. The manuscript, threaded and non-uniform in paper and text size (21 x 17 cm), employs khat naskhi with black ink as the primary color, while certain marks utilize green and red ink. Additionaly, textual aspects of it describes Kamus Mu’jam al-Qur’an including several scholia, such as corrections for written errors, vocabulary, letter descriptions, reading marks, wakaf signs and lists of invalid texts. The major finding of this study is the eight keywords: al-Asrār, dīnu yusr, ihsān, abrār, sulḥ, ‘ilm, ‘adamu taqlīd, and al-‘amal that were not typical to other dictionaries. This study contributes significantly by providing fresh insights into the importance of the Kamus Mu’jam al-Qur’an as a source of knowledge and understanding how this manuscript has been preserved over time. It also sheds light on the evolution of Quranic studies in Indonesia.

Abstract

The aftermath of World War II significantly impacted dialogue and understanding between cultures, educational perspectives, and religions in Japan. This period saw widespread destruction and psychological trauma, leading to a sense of powerlessness and discouraging Western settlement. This paper aims to reintroduce Plato's philosophy within the context of Japan's post-war dialogue (Risō/理想), highlighting the country's philosophical contributions and its openness to religious institutions, including the participation of Christian congregations in government. Using a qualitative literature review of primary and secondary sources, this study finds that philosophical dialogue has positively influenced both the government and the populace. The intersection of various religions and Christianity in post-war Japan facilitated the survival and growth of Christianity, demonstrated by the enduring presence of the Way of the Cross and the pervasive influence of Christian values in Japan's religious, political, and cultural spheres.

Abstract

The Muhammadiyah organization was founded with the slogan of renewal and modernization. These two slogans make Muhammadiyah different from other organizations. The text "Ma Huwa Asasu Jam'iatul Muhammadiyah" explains Ahmad Dahlan's sermons and describes the basis and concerns of Ahmad Dahlan regarding the condition of Muslims who deviate from the teachings of the Qur'an and Hadith. This study used the paradigm of philology and hermeneutics as a humanities science, namely, a science that carries out a hermeneutic function by correcting texts as social discourse. Text analysis, especially single manuscript editions, uses descriptive analysis methods. The handling of the text "Ma Huwa Asasul Jamiatul Muhammadiyah" requires careful content analysis by considering various specific cases in the text and the nature of its intertextuality. This study found three major principles of Ahmad Dahlan's ideology. First is the ideology of the Muhammadiyah organization. Second, Ahmad Dahlan's reasons for establishing Muhammadiyah. Third, Ahmad Dahlan's message to the people of Pekajangan, Pekalongan, Central Java. This research aims to provide information about the founding of the Muhamadiyah organization contained in the text. Then, it examines in depth how Ahmad Dahlan's ideology established the Muhammadiyah organization. In addition, it reveals the implied content of Ahmad Dahlan's sermon. This is necessary so that the cadres and the people understand the embryo of the Muhammadiyah organization.

Abstract

The trend of using social media for da'wah in Indonesia has sparked diverse perspectives. While some religious studies emphasize the negative aspects of social media, such as exclusivism and extremism, interreligious dialogue studies often focus on theological and ritualistic aspects. This study addresses a gap by analyzing the reception of interreligious dialogue on social media, specifically through a case study of Deddy Corbuzier's YouTube channel using the hashtag #LoginCloseTheDoor. Utilizing a qualitative approach, this research examines audience responses, both positive and negative, and the potential social impact of these dialogues. The study seeks to answer two key questions: How does Deddy Corbuzier's interreligious dialogue content under the hashtag #LoginCloseTheDoor influence social media users? What factors drive netizens to engage enthusiastically with this content? Findings indicate that the "LogInCloseTheDoor" content effectively introduces religious concepts and receives positive public reception, reflecting successful religious adaptation and high engagement.

Abstract

This study examines the integration of Sundanese culture and hadith teachings in the Wawacan Panganten Tujuh manuscript, an Islamic heritage of the archipelago with historical and spiritual significance. The research addresses the lack of academic studies exploring the cultural and religious dimensions of this manuscript. It aims to uncover the Islamic values within Wawacan Panganten Tujuh, particularly those referencing hadith, and to analyze the harmonization between local traditions and Islamic teachings. This study employed a qualitative approach, utilizing content analysis techniques and intertextuality theory, supported by philology, hadith takhrij, and Stuart Hall's theory of acceptance. The findings reveal that Wawacan Panganten Tujuh reflects the acculturation process between Sundanese culture and Islamic teachings through narrative elements, cultural symbolism, and marriage rituals such as huap lingkung and walimatul ursy, which align with the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH). These elements are adapted in a local context to reinforce the moral and spiritual message of marriage. In conclusion, this manuscript serves not only as a medium for preserving traditions but also as a relevant da'wah tool to address the challenges of modernization. With its profound Islamic values and contextual relevance, Wawacan Panganten Tujuh underscores the importance of maintaining harmony between local culture and Islamic sharia in building a unique Islamic identity in the archipelago.

Abstract

This article examines the ideological struggle that influenced the creation of the hadith book Hidayatu al-Thalibin by Buya Manshur, within the intellectual tradition of Minangkabau. This manuscript is crucial for understanding the transmission of hadith in the social, cultural, and political context of early 20th century Minangkabau. The era's colonialism and Islamic renewal movements impacted not only economic and political spheres but also intellectual dynamics, including hadith discourse. A qualitative approach, incorporating both textual and non-textual analysis, was employed to understand the socio-historical context influencing the book's writing process. Data were gathered through documentation and analysis of relevant texts and historical records. The study found that the religious struggle between traditionalists (kaum tuo) and modernists (kaum mudo) in the early 20th century significantly shaped the intellectual narrative of Hidayatu al-Thalibin. The book served as a medium for reinforcing the ideological identity of the traditionalists while also reflecting social criticism and cultural strategies in response to changes in Minangkabau. These findings highlight the importance of studying hadith regionalism to understand the social, cultural, and political dynamics influencing the development of local Islamic traditions, particularly in the Nusantara context. The implications underscore the need for further research into how regional socio-historical contexts shape religious texts and discourses.

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming diverse fields, including the interpretation of Islamic religious texts. This study examines the influence of AI, particularly in the context of Nusantara Islamic traditions, and evaluates its ethical and theological implications. The research addresses the growing need to understand how AI intersects with traditional Islamic scholarship in Southeast Asia, emphasizing Indonesia as a case study. Using a qualitative literature review method, the study analyzes peer-reviewed articles, books, and reports from the last ten years that focus on AI applications in interpreting Islamic religious texts. Key findings reveal that AI significantly enhances accessibility and efficiency in interpreting religious texts by offering tools for translation, pattern recognition, and thematic analysis. However, AI faces notable limitations, including contextual inaccuracies and an inability to grasp the nuanced meanings of religious doctrines deeply rooted in cultural and historical traditions. The ethical and theological concerns identified include questions of interpretative authority, the risk of textual distortion, and the moral responsibilities of AI developers. The research highlights the need for collaborative frameworks between technologists and religious scholars to ensure ethically sound and theologically informed AI applications. It contributes to the literature by focusing on Nusantara Islamic texts and proposing actionable guidelines for integrating AI in religious studies responsibly. This study provides a foundation for further interdisciplinary research to balance technological innovation with the preservation of Islamic interpretive traditions.

Abstract

Previous studies have identified radical content in Islamic religious education (PAI) textbooks. However, no comprehensive examination of 12 PAI textbooks in Indonesian Islamic high schools (Madrasah Aliyah) has been conducted. This study aims to address two questions: (1) What forms of non-moderate interpretation threaten religious moderation? (2) What forms of moderate interpretation strengthen religious moderation? This qualitative study gathered data through documentation, interviews with PAI textbook authors, and discussions with PAI experts in scientific forums. Data were analyzed using an interactive model. The findings of this study identified three forms of non-moderate interpretations in PAI textbooks that threaten religious moderation: (1) Textual interpretations undermining national commitment (wataniyyah), obedience to legislation (dusturiyyah), and acceptance of tradition (urfiyyah); (2) Partial interprettations compromising equality (mubadalah), compassion (rahamutiyyah), and justice (adalah); (3) Monodimensional interpretations on benefit (maslahat), humanity (insaniyyah), and tolerance (tasamuh). Conversely, moderate interpretations that strengthen religious moderation include: (1) Contextual interpretations combining objective text meanings with relevant subjective contexts; (2) Holistic interpretations integrating comprehensive understanding of the Qur'an through the maudu’i (thematic) method with collective expert validation (taqrir jama’i); (3) Multidimensional interpretations merging insights from Islamic science experts (shar’i) with those from natural, social, and humanities sciences (kawni). The practical implications highlight the need for developing mufassir education programs to produce contextual interpretations, expanding scientific forums for holistic interpretations, and enhancing collaboration between shar’i and kawni experts for multidimensional interpretations
