Abstract

ABSTRACT Socio-religious movements are intrinsically linked to religious authorities within a society, including those of traditional Islamic movements in Madura which  significantly shaps the power dynamics of local religious authorities. The influence of the kiai, a local Muslim leader, extends well beyond religious authority, shaping political, social, economic, and cultural life in significant ways. However, the roles of other authorities, such as the Ustaz, often go overlooked in the Madurese society. This article delves into the roles of three religious authorities in Kangean Island, Madura: the Kiai, Ustaz, and Ghuru Morok (Kiai Langgar). This ethnographic research was conducted through in-depth interviews and active involvement in various activities of these religious authority figures. The researcher also made extensive observations of the activities of these religious authority figures through direct engagement. The data was collected and analyzed with a keen focus on understanding the unique roles and influences of these religious authorities within the cultural and societal context of Kangean Island. The study finds that the Kiai, identified with Traditional Islam and affiliated with Nahdlatul Ulama, maintains a dualistic approach towards local traditions, encompassing both mystification and demystification. In contrast, the Ustaz, associated with Puritan Islamic groups affiliated with Persis and Muhammadiyah, tends to demystify local traditions. Meanwhile, the Ghuru Morok, although similar to the Kiai from traditional Islam, leans closer to Syncretic Islam in practice. The Ghuru Morok tends to mystify local traditions. Keywords: Religious authority, Contestation, Tolerance, Islamic Culture, Indonesian Muslim   ABSTRAK Gerakan sosial keagamaan memiliki relasi kuat dengan otoritas keagamaan dalam masyarakat.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Suffering is an inherent reality within Asian societies, stemming from various economic, political, social, cultural, and religious factors that contribute to the widespread poverty in Asia. While some individuals accept this suffering as a normal part of human life, others strive to escape the suffering. The concept of overcoming adversity is referred to as survival theology. This study explores the theology of survival through the lenses of migration theology, Pentecostalism, and Gawai Dayak culture. Employing a descriptive qualitative research method and a constructive theological approach, this study aims to understand how survival theology can be contextualized within these diverse frameworks. The findings reveal that communal unity serves as a powerful force to help individuals sustain suffering. Additionally, personal faith and trust provide additional for enduring hardhips as part of God’s plan. Keywords: Gawai West Kalimantan, Survival Theology, Contextual Studies, Pentecostalism   ABSTRAK Penderitaan merupakan realitas yang melekat dengan masyarakat, termasuk masyarakat Dayak.

Abstract

ABSTRACTAmong the problems of Islamic studies is the view of Islamic fundamentalists and conservatives who see semiotics as a theory of the study of texts that is prohibited by Islam. This article discusses Roland Barthes' semiotic theory, both in the sense of denotative/heuristic reading which looks at the text coherently and connotative/hermeneutical reading which requires looking at the social context of the text. The method used is a comparative study of literature, between Barthes' semiotics, bal?gah science (classical Arabic stylistics), and tafsir science. Data was obtained from literature and the results of in-depth interviews with several experts. This article finds that semiotics does not conflict with the Koran, in fact it is a necessity as a standard text study method. Without semiotics, an interpretation of the Koran and hadith is not an Islamic standard interpretation. However, the term known in the Islamic tradition is not semiotics, but na?m. Apart from that, the terms tafsir al-?y?t bi al-?y?t and tafs?r al-?y?t bi al-had?? or vice versa, also the method of interpreting mau??’? (thematic). In interpreting, you are required to master asb?b al-nuz?l, asb?b al-wur?d, and mastery of Meccan and Medina verses as the social context of the text. Semiotics and the study of text studies in Islam, therefore, not only make interpretations of the Al-Qur’an (Islamic texts) that show the intention of the Koran, namely public benefit, but also make Islamic studies scientifically accountable. Keywords: Structural Semiotics, Na?m, Na?w, Bal?gah, Interpretation of al-?y?t bi al-?y?t/bi al-?ad??,| Interpretation of Mau??'?. Abstract

This study explores the concept of Wahdatul Wujud (Unity of Existence) as depicted in Javanese palace manuscripts, specifically the Serat Menak from Yogyakarta and Serat Wedhatama from Surakarta. Wahdatul Wujud, an Islamic Sufi doctrine, asserts the absolute existence of Allah and has been influential in the spiritual traditions of the Javanese courts since the fragmentation of Islamic Mataram in 1755. Utilizing a descriptive analytic and philology approach, this research examines the implied messages within these manuscripts. The comparative analysis reveals that the Serat Menak, written in Old Javanese (Kawi), presents more complex vocabulary and is harder to understand compared to the Serat Wedhatama. Additionally, while Serat Menak illustrates the Unity of Existence through the narratives of ancient prophets and leaders, Serat Wedhatama conveys it through the Javanese concept of Manunggaling Kawula Gusti (the unity of servant and Lord). These findings underscore the nuanced interpretations of Wahdatul Wujud in Javanese literature and their cultural significance.

Abstract

This study explores the philosophical depth embedded in “Syair Surat Kapal,” a cultural artifact from Riau, Indonesia, celebrated for its enchanting poetry and melodious rhythm. The research employs a qualitative methodology within the framework of cultural studies to investigate the philosophy of Islamic Da’wah embodied in the manuscript. The objective of the study is to examine the impact of Islam on “Surat Kapal,” particularly within the context of the oral tradition of the Malay community in Rengat. It traces the influence of Islamic teachings on this community’s oral heritage. This study employs literature review and interviews with seven informants from Riau. The findings of this study underscore the significant role of “Surat Kapal” in shaping the Islamic identity within the community. The underlying philosophy of “Syair Surat Kapal” as a medium for Islamic da’wah is anchored in the belief that literature and poetry are potent mediums for disseminating religious teachings and fostering moral values. The vivid imagery and compelling narrative of the poem in the manuscript not only captivate the audience but also impart significant lessons about faith and belief in God. Consequently, “Syair Surat Kapal” exemplifies the power of literature in religious and cultural propagation within an academic context.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to explore the various diaspora forms of the Balinese ethnic community's religious and cultural traditions, specificially in Tridharmayoga Village in South Lampung. The island of Bali is recognized for its unique Hindu religious traditions which mirror the indigenous culture. It is observed that when the Hindu Balinese community migrates to transmigration areas or other regions exterior to Bali, they persist in practicing these traditions as a component of their Hindu identity. The Tridharmayoga Village was founded on the principles of three diaspora religions: Hinduism, Islam and Catholicism. The village promotes interacttions that place a high emphasis on unity, despite the changes in religious traditions and cultural practices that might diverge from the native homeland. However, these traditions remain prevalent in the diaspora region. Considering these factors, questions emerge regarding the Balinese diaspora's presence in this village and how the Balinese ethnic group's religious and cultural heritage traditions, inherited from their homeland, are expressed in this new environment. This research adopts an exploratory and qualitative descriptive-analytical approach, presenting data descriptively based on the empirical evidence collected from the field. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and document analysis from a variety of sources in the field. The findings of this study indicate that the village, which is rooted in unity, diversity, and multiculturalism, adjusts its religious traditions to align with the established culture. This adjustment, however, does not eradicate the fundamental traditions but modifies them to suit the economic conditions of the host land, ensuring adherence to obligatory practices. This study offers insights into the value transformation within the religious traditions of the Balinese ethnic group, influenced by specific local conditions, particularly focusing on the Hindu Balinese community in Tridharmayoga Village. Keywords: Diaspora, Religious Culture, Balinese Hindu Ethnicity, Tridharmayoga Village, South Lampung.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of anti-madzhab discourse in the fiqh materials of Islamic education textbooks widely circulated in Indonesian schools and madrasahs. By employing a qualitative library study approach, this research analyzes primary references for mazhab comparison, including Al-Fiqhu ‘alā Al-Madzāhib Al-Arba’ah by Abdu al-Rahman al-Jaziri and Al-Mausū’ah Al-Fiqhiyah Al-Kuwaitiyyah by some Kuwait scholars. The findings reveal that several fiqh-related topics in the textbooks, such as the conditions for valid ablution, requirements to become an imam, timing for zakat payment and identification of zakat recipients, reflect some anti-madzhab perspectives. These perspectives can lead to al-masyaqqah (difficulties) in worship practices within the community. The study highlights the need for a thorough evaluation of Islamic education textbooks, recommending that fiqh materials incorporate traditional madzhab frameworks to enhance their alignment with Islamic religious education standards. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse on curriculum development and the importance of maintaining doctrinal integrity in educational resources.

Abstract

This article explores the Sufistic thought of Sheikh Burhanuddin as presented in his work, “Tazkir al-Gabi”. This work is significant for its potential to elucidate the history of Sufism’s development in the Minangkabau and Malay Islamic world. This study employs a qualitative method with a historical approach, incorporating heuristics, source criticism, interpretation and historiography to uncover the history of “Tazkir al-Gabi” and Sheikh Burhanuddin’s Sufistic thought. The findings reveal that “Tazkir al-Gabi” is a critical work directly linked to 14th-century Sufism historical sources. It presents a Sunni Sufism interpretation style, particularly in discussions about divinity and Sufism. “Tazkir al-Gabi” also embodies efforts to reconcile Sufism and Shari’a, specifically in clarifying the understanding of wujudiyah in Syattariyah teachings in Minangkabau. This reconciliation is evident in the interpretation of physical and spiritual deeds, underscoring the importance of Sharia-based deeds in Sufism. The study’s implications highlight the need for optimal exploration of local manuscripts to understand the diversity of religious discussions within their cultural contexts.

Abstract

This study seeks to explore the pattern of hadith reception in the da’wah practices within the Muslim community of Lilinta, Raja Ampat. In particular, it aims to explore how the hadith text, articulated in Arabic, continues to influence local behaviors, beliefs and customs, despite the community’s lack of cognitive understanding of the language. Employing the living hadith approach and adopting Stuart Hall’s reception theory, this study reveals that Lilinta community demonstrates a habitus pattern of ‘negotiation’ in hadith reception. This study found that while on the one hand the redaction of the hadith was not literally understood by the local Muslims, but the essence of hadith was practiced as cultural doctrines. The pattern of hadith transformation suggests that the hadith and its practices co-exist on divergent paths. Practice transpires through doctrinal channels, while the narrative remains misunderstood. This communal-practical living hadith, grounded in habitus rather than cognition, culminates in robust, albeit static traditions. This study concludes that hadith effectively molds the behavior and beliefs of the Lilinta community when viewed from the practiced behaviors over cognitive understanding.

Abstract

Indonesia is home to teachings and manuscripts that advocate moderation in life. One such cultural manifestation is the Serat Cebolek manuscript, written by Yasadipura I. This manuscript narrates the theological conflict between Hajj Mutamakkin and Ketib Anom. The objective of this article is to examine the efforts towards religious moderation undertaken by Sunan Paku Buwana II, as depicted in the Serat Cebolek manuscript. This study employed library research, utilizing a biographical approach. Data was collected through documentation techniques, drawing from printed sources and texts pertaining to Serat Cebolek. The study reveals that Paku Buwana II’s decision to forgive Haji Mutamakkin exemplifies the characters of a moderate leader. The king pardoned Haji Mutamakkin’s actions, albeit with the stipulation that he refrain from disseminating his knowledge among the kingdom’s populace. In the context of Javanese ethical values, Sunan Paku Buwana epitomizes a “Ratu Adil” or a just ruler. This study reinforces the discourse on religious moderation, particularly through an exploration of historical contexts. The king’s attitude serves as a valuable exemplar for contemporary leaders grappling with the issue of religious fundamentalism in Indonesia.
