Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the perceptions of bilingual teaching held by both teachers and students, as well as the processes used to conduct bilingual language instruction and the results obtained from using bilingual language education. The qualitative research approach was utilized for this investigation. For the purpose of this study, a teacher and ten students from the XI IBB Man 2 Bone Class served as participants and served as the study's subjects. In addition to that, the data gathering was done by a combination of observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings indicated that teachers and students had a favorable impression of bilingual education, placing it in the category of highly perceived bilingual education. The incorporation of bilingual education, which is soundly founded on Baker's theory (2001), comprises the separation of language and the concurrent use of language inside a lesson. Last but not least, there was a beneficial effect that teaching students in two languages has on the overall accomplishment of such students. The present study implies that the bilingual education approach could foster students' EFL repertoires in the context of Senior high school students and specifically within rural regions, as evidenced by the study.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effect of skimming and scanning strategies on improving reading comprehension among students attending the English club at Senior High School Zainul Hasan 1 Genggong. A considerable number of students continue to struggle with reading, an area that is integral to their academic progress and language acquisition. Addressing these challenges necessitates effective teaching tactics to enhance reading comprehension skills, the exploration of which formed the core of this research. The study utilized a pre-experimental research design, focusing on a single group pre-test and post-test methodology. The sample consisted of 30 students who received targeted instruction on skimming and scanning strategies over a determined period. Skimming involves rapidly reviewing a text to get a general idea, while scanning is a technique used for quickly locating specific information within a text. Both strategies are believed to be pivotal in assisting learners to become more efficient and effective readers. Data collected from the pre and post-tests was analyzed using the Paired Sample T-Test. The alternative hypothesis, suggesting that skimming and scanning techniques have no significant effect on reading comprehension, is rejected if the Sig (2-tailed) value is more than 0.05. Conversely, if the Sig (2-tailed) is less than 0.05, the alternative hypothesis is accepted, indicating a significant effect of skimming and scanning techniques on students' reading comprehension. The study's findings revealed that the students who received training in skimming and scanning demonstrated significant improvement in their reading comprehension, substantiating the beneficial impact of these techniques. This improvement is further corroborated by the Sig (2-tailed) value of 0.000, which is less than the critical threshold of 0.05, leading to the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis. The statistically significant results from the Paired Sample T-Test provided robust evidence supporting the efficacy of skimming and scanning techniques in enhancing students' reading comprehension skills. This demonstrates the significance of these strategies in addressing reading comprehension challenges among students and informs the pedagogical approaches for teaching reading in EFL contexts. It underscores the need for their integration in curriculum planning and instruction, thereby contributing substantially to the academic discourse on reading comprehension strategies.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of using short stories as a teaching vocabulary resource for second grade students at Babul Khaer Islamic Boarding School Bulukumba. The study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group to evaluate the impact of short stories on students' vocabulary acquisition. The participants in this research were 16-member classes of second-grade students (XI. Exact-2 as the experimental class and XI. Social Science-2 as the control class). The study instrument consisted of a test and a questionnaire. This data showed that the pre-test mean score for the experimental class was 47.31 and that it increased to 56.75 on the post-test. The findings revealed that students in the experimental group, who were exposed to short stories, significantly improved their vocabulary compared to the control group. The results suggest that short stories can be a valuable resource for vocabulary instruction in second grade students. Furthermore, the study highlights the potential implications of integrating short stories into the curriculum, including enhanced student engagement, improved critical thinking skills, and enriched cultural understanding. Additional research is needed to further explore the long-term effects of using short stories for vocabulary instruction and its impact on students' overall language development.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore EFL higher education students’ intercultural communicative competence in community interactions based on communal perspectives. The study will employ a qualitative approach using two types of interviews: individual (a face-to-face meeting with one community member) and small group (videoconferencing with two or three members as the representation of the student’s community). Six-phase guide of thematic analysis was employed in this study. The study reveals that the message content and message relationship are displayed as important elements in community interaction. In practicing intercultural communicative competence in the community, EFL students portrayed open-mindedness, self-awareness, and nonverbal communication skills as the key characteristics of effective communication. Furthermore, the emergence of misunderstanding in community interaction is undeniably linked to speaker-related, interlocutor-related, and participant-related trigger. Therefore, EFL students addressed the use of language and the practice of tolerance to incorporate intercultural aspects in community interaction.
