Abstract

Streptococcus pneumoniae infections such as pneumonia, meningitis, and bacteremia remain major causes of morbidity and mortality among children under five. The Indonesian government has implemented the Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV) immunization program nationally since 2022, including in Malinau Regency. However, the coverage of PCV immunization has not yet reached the established targets. The low coverage is presumed to be influenced by several factors, including maternal knowledge, family support, and access to healthcare services. This study employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 40 mothers with infants aged 0–1 month, selected using a total sampling technique. The independent variables included maternal knowledge, family support, and access to healthcare services, while the dependent variable was the interest in participating in PCV immunization. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed through univariate and bivariate analysis using the Chi-Square test with a significance level of 5% (α = 0.05). The results showed that the majority of respondents had good knowledge (60.0%), good family support (67.5%), and adequate access to healthcare services (72.5%). A total of 45.0% of respondents had a high level of interest in participating in PCV immunization. Bivariate analysis indicated a significant relationship between maternal knowledge, family support, and access to healthcare services with the interest in participating in PCV immunization (p = 0.000). Maternal knowledge, family support, and access to healthcare services are significantly associated with the interest in participating in PCV immunization among infants aged 0–1 month. Continuous efforts to improve health education, strengthen family roles, and enhance access to healthcare services are necessary to increase PCV immunization coverage.

Abstract

Anxiety among pregnant women in facing the childbirth process remains a maternal health problem as it can affect psychological readiness, the course of labor, and the well-being of both mother and fetus. Lack of support, inaccurate perceptions, and fear of labor pain often exacerbate anxiety experienced by pregnant women. This study aimed to determine the relationship between maternal perception and husband’s support with anxiety levels among pregnant women in facing the childbirth process at UPTD Puskesmas Jrangoan.        This study employed a correlational analytic design with a population of 33 pregnant women, from which 30 respondents were selected using simple random sampling. The research instrument was a questionnaire, and data were analyzed using the Spearman rank test.          The results showed that most pregnant women had good perceptions regarding childbirth, with 18 respondents (60.0%). In terms of husband’s support, the majority of pregnant women received good support from their husbands, totaling 21 respondents (70.0%). Anxiety levels among pregnant women indicated that half of the respondents experienced moderate anxiety, amounting to 15 respondents (50.0%). There was a significant relationship between maternal perception and anxiety levels among pregnant women in facing childbirth at UPTD Puskesmas Jrangoan, Sampang, with a p-value of 0.000 (<0.05). There was also a significant relationship between husband’s support and anxiety levels among pregnant women in facing childbirth at UPTD Puskesmas Jrangoan, Sampang, with a p-value of 0.007 (<0.05).          These findings indicate a significant relationship between husband’s support and anxiety levels among pregnant women, where better husband’s support is associated with lower levels of maternal anxiety.

Abstract

Bullying, including verbal, physical, relational, and cyber forms, has become a major public health issue affecting adolescents worldwide. Exposure to bullying during adolescence is associated with various adverse psychological and social consequences, including depression, anxiety, chronic stress, sleep disturbances, trauma, suicidal ideation, and impaired interpersonal relationships. Despite the growing number of studies, comprehensive evidence synthesizing these impacts and their protective factors remains limited. This study aimed to systematically synthesize scientific evidence regarding the psychological and social impacts of bullying on adolescent mental health and to identify protective factors that may reduce these negative consequences. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Literature published between 2013 and 2025 was retrieved from Google Scholar, PubMed, ScienceDirect, DOAJ, and Garuda databases. Study quality was assessed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) and Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) checklists. Twenty-one eligible studies representing quantitative, qualitative, mixed-method, and systematic review designs were included and analyzed using thematic synthesis.   The findings consistently demonstrate that bullying substantially contributes to depression, anxiety, prolonged stress, sleep disorders, trauma, suicidal ideation, and social withdrawal among adolescents. Bullying also negatively affects interpersonal relationships and academic functioning, while family support, positive school climate, teacher involvement, and adaptive coping strategies emerge as important protective factors. These findings highlight the need for comprehensive multidisciplinary interventions involving families, schools, healthcare professionals, and communities to establish safe, inclusive, and supportive environments that promote adolescent mental well-being.

Abstract

Anemia in pregnancy remains a widespread public health problem, including in the working area of Alalak Selatan Public Health Center, Banjarmasin City, which previously recorded an increase in cases. Demographic factors such as maternal age and parity are theoretically believed to be risk factors triggering a decrease in hemoglobin levels. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between age and parity with the incidence of anemia in first-trimester pregnant women in the working area of Alalak Selatan Public Health Center, Banjarmasin City. This study utilized a quantitative analytic observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 120 first-trimester pregnant women selected using a purposive sampling technique based on data from January to November 2025. The independent variables were age and parity, while the dependent variable was the incidence of anemia. Data were collected using observation sheets referring to the maternal cohort medical records to record age, parity, and hemoglobin levels, which were then analyzed using the Chi-Square statistical test. The results showed that the majority of respondents were in the healthy or not-at-risk reproductive age range of 20-35 years (81.7%) and had multipara parity status (48.3%). The incidence of anemia was very low, with 95% of respondents not experiencing anemia and only 5% experiencing mild anemia. Statistical tests proved that there was no significant relationship between maternal age and the incidence of anemia (p = 0.492), and no significant relationship was found between parity and the incidence of anemia (p = 0.712). This study concludes that age and parity have no relationship with the incidence of anemia in pregnant women in the area. The low rate of anemia in both at-risk and not-at-risk age and parity groups indicates that pregnant women's compliance with routine Antenatal Care (ANC) programs and iron supplementation consumption has a much more dominant impact in preventing blood deficiency complications.

Abstract

Iron-deficiency anemia during pregnancy remains a major public health concern because it increases the risk of adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. Although iron supplementation is routinely recommended, its effectiveness may be limited by suboptimal iron absorption. Tomato juice, a natural source of vitamin C, has the potential to enhance non-heme iron absorption and improve hemoglobin synthesis. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of tomato juice combined with iron supplementation on hemoglobin levels among pregnant women with anemia. A quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest non-equivalent control group design was conducted among 28 anemic pregnant women in the second and third trimesters in Penengahan Village, South Lampung, Indonesia. Participants were allocated into an intervention group (iron supplementation plus 250 mL tomato juice daily for 14 days; n = 14) and a control group (iron supplementation only; n = 14). Hemoglobin levels were measured before and after the intervention using a standardized portable hemoglobin analyzer. Within-group and between-group differences were analyzed using paired and independent t-tests with a significance level of p < 0.05. Both groups demonstrated increased hemoglobin levels after the intervention. However, the intervention group showed a greater mean increase than the control group (1.17 vs. 0.71 g/dL). The improvement in the intervention group was statistically significant (p < 0.001), indicating that tomato juice enhanced the effect of iron supplementation on hemoglobin improvement. Daily consumption of tomato juice as an adjunct to iron supplementation was more effective than iron supplementation alone in increasing hemoglobin levels among pregnant women with anemia. Incorporating vitamin C-rich foods into antenatal nutritional programs may improve the effectiveness of anemia management during pregnancy.

Abstract

Adolescent girls are at high risk of iron deficiency anemia due to increased iron requirements during growth and menstrual blood loss. Although iron supplementation tablets are widely used for anemia prevention, iron absorption remains suboptimal. Lemon juice, a natural source of vitamin C, may enhance iron absorption and improve hemoglobin levels. This pre-experimental study used a one-group pretest–posttest design involving 47 adolescent girls in Bandar Surabaya Village, Central Lampung, Indonesia. Participants received iron supplementation tablets combined with lemon juice for four weeks. Hemoglobin levels were measured before and after the intervention using a portable hemoglobin analyzer. Data were analyzed using a paired t-test with a significance level of p < 0.05. Mean hemoglobin levels increased from 14.72 g/dL before the intervention to 15.80 g/dL after the intervention. The proportion of participants with hemoglobin levels <12 g/dL decreased from 4.3% to 0%. Statistical analysis showed a significant improvement in hemoglobin levels following the intervention (p = 0.001). Iron supplementation combined with lemon juice effectively improved hemoglobin levels among adolescent girls. This combination may serve as a simple and affordable complementary strategy to strengthen anemia prevention programs.

Abstract

Childhood cancer remains one of the leading causes of mortality from non-communicable diseases among children. Delayed diagnosis is largely associated with limited parental awareness of the early signs and symptoms of childhood cancer. Health education is therefore essential to improve community knowledge and promote early detection. This community service program employed a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. The intervention consisted of health education on childhood cancer, early warning signs, and the importance of early detection through lectures, discussions, and educational leaflets. A total of 20 parents and community health volunteers participated. Knowledge was assessed before and after the intervention using a structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed descriptively and using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test with a significance level of 5%. The proportion of participants with good knowledge increased from 20% to 50%, while poor knowledge decreased from 45% to 10% following the intervention. Statistical analysis demonstrated a significant improvement in participants' knowledge after the educational program (p < 0.001). Health education effectively improves parents' and community health volunteers' knowledge regarding childhood cancer awareness. Continuous educational programs should be integrated into community health promotion strategies to facilitate early detection and timely referral of children with suspected cancer.

Abstract

Gout arthritis is an inflammatory joint disease caused by the deposition of monosodium urate crystals, characterized by pain, swelling, and limited joint movement. The pain experienced by patients may reduce their quality of life; therefore, effective management through both pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches is needed. Acupressure therapy is one of the complementary interventions that can be used to relieve pain. This case study aimed to describe the implementation of acupressure therapy in reducing pain intensity among older adults diagnosed with gout arthritis. This study employed a descriptive case study design involving two older adults diagnosed with gout arthritis. The observed variable was pain intensity before and after the implementation of acupressure therapy. Data were collected using a family nursing assessment format and the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) to measure pain intensity. Acupressure therapy was administered three times within one week by applying pressure to the KI3 (Taixi) and SP6 (Sanyinjiao) acupoints. Following three sessions of acupressure therapy, both participants experienced a reduction in pain intensity. The pain score of both participants decreased from a score of 6 (moderate pain) to a score of 3 (mild pain). These findings indicate that acupressure therapy contributed to pain reduction and may serve as an effective complementary nursing intervention for older adults with gout arthritis. The implementation of acupressure therapy at the KI3 (Taixi) and SP6 (Sanyinjiao) acupoints was effective in reducing pain intensity among older adults with gout arthritis. Therefore, acupressure therapy can be considered a complementary non-pharmacological nursing intervention to help manage pain in patients with gout arthritis.

Abstract

Burn injuries in toddlers frequently occur in the household environment and can cause serious consequences if not treated properly. Mothers, as the primary caregivers, play an important role in providing first aid. However, the low level of knowledge regarding the initial management of burn injuries may lead to inappropriate treatment. Education through leaflet media is one effort to improve mothers’ knowledge about first aid for burn injuries in toddlers. This study aimed to determine the effect of education through leaflet media on the knowledge level of mothers with toddlers. This study used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. The sample consisted of 30 respondents selected using a total sampling technique at Pekauman Public Health Center, Banjarmasin. Data were collected using a questionnaire that had been tested for validity (0.470–0.744) and reliability (Cronbach’s Alpha 0.921), then analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. Before the education was provided, most respondents had a moderate level of knowledge (66.7%). After the education, the majority of respondents were in the good knowledge category (66.7%), and there were no respondents in the poor category. The Wilcoxon test showed a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating that education through leaflet media was effective in improving mothers’ knowledge regarding first aid for burn injuries in toddlers. Education through leaflet media proved effective in increasing mothers’ knowledge about first aid for burn injuries in toddlers at Pekauman Public Health Center, Banjarmasin. This study is expected to be considered by health workers in providing routine education to the community.

Abstract

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among school-aged adolescents have become an increasingly important public health concern due to poor ergonomic practices, prolonged sedentary behavior, and excessive use of digital devices. Vocational high school students are particularly vulnerable because they engage in both classroom-based learning and practical activities that may increase the risk of musculoskeletal problems. Therefore, effective educational interventions are needed to improve awareness and knowledge of MSD prevention from an early age. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the SMART POSTURE (Student Movement Awareness for Reducing Tension and Posture Injury) program in improving vocational high school students’ knowledge of musculoskeletal disorder prevention. A one-group pretest–posttest design was employed. Twenty-six students from Roudlotul Hikmah Vocational High School were selected using purposive sampling. The SMART POSTURE intervention consisted of ergonomic education, demonstrations of correct posture, stretching exercises, and interactive discussions delivered in a single 90–120-minute session. Knowledge levels were assessed using a 10-item multiple-choice questionnaire administered before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics with a significance level of p < 0.05. The mean knowledge score increased from 58.27 ± 10.34 in the pretest to 85.19 ± 7.42 in the posttest, representing an improvement of 26.92 points. In addition, participants demonstrated improved ability to apply ergonomic sitting and standing postures, appropriate digital device usage, and proper school bag carrying techniques. High levels of participation and engagement were also observed throughout the intervention. The SMART POSTURE program effectively improved students’ knowledge and awareness regarding musculoskeletal disorder prevention. Integrating ergonomic education, practical demonstrations, and stretching exercises may serve as an effective health promotion strategy to foster ergonomic behaviors and support musculoskeletal health among adolescents.
