Abstract

Leaders possess multifaceted understanding to resolve the various problems within the government. In Indonesia, leaders can instill Islamic and Indonesian values to foster patriotism and respect for diversity, which are central to Islamic teachings. The influence of globalization has led to Indonesian leaders’ difficulty to integrate Islamic and Indonesian values. The lack of comprehension among leaders regarding these values is a primary factor in the divergence of Islamic and Indonesian principles. This paper educates future leaders and provides them with leadership concepts. This study employs a literature review by collecting various books as references. Nurcholish Madjid’s trilogy of thought provides a complex foundation for leadership to reconcile Islamic and Indonesian principles. Islam as Rahmatan lil ‘Alamin, Modernization and Postmodernity in Islam, and Islamic Indonesianness are Nurcholish Madjid’s ideas that can be implemented in leadership approaches such as Inclusivity in Leadership, Adaptation to Change, and Strengthening Pancasila Values. Madjid’s trilogy is a valuable resource for leadership in Indonesia, particularly in building unity while respecting identity or background. Islamic values with nationalistic principles can ultimately be understood as a form of harmonious integration capable of adapting to global developments.

Abstract

This study examines the role of Islamic tertiary institutions in strengthening the halal ecosystem in Indonesia through the establishment and operation of Halal Centers. These centers, acting as Halal Inspection Agencies (LPHs), are expected to significantly impact halalization efforts by integrating scientific knowledge with Islamic values, ultimately serving as hubs for halal studies. Through qualitative research on Halal Centers at five State Islamic Higher Education Institutions (PTKIN), this study analyzes the individual contributions of each institution to generalize their collective role. The findings reveal that these institutions make significant contributions to the advancement of halal potential in Indonesia through three key roles: (a) developing human resources through the establishment and operationalization of Halal Centers; (b) increasing access to halal certification by functioning as LPHs, thereby incentivizing wider adoption of halal standards among businesses; and (c) promoting halal product research and business incubation, particularly for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). These universities, leveraging their infrastructure, human resources, and expertise, are positioned to pioneer innovation and research within the halal sector. Furthermore, practical initiatives undertaken by these institutions include disseminating information on halal certification to MSME stakeholders and assisting with Halal Product Process (PPH) implementation.

Abstract

The global ethical crisis, marked by increasing unethical behavior such as corruption and social conflict, necessitates an educational approach that instills moral and ethical values. This article examines the urgency of adab-based learning as a potential solution, drawing upon hadith of the Prophet Muhammad SAW and relevant literature. Using a literature study approach, this research reveals the hadith's explicit emphasis on character building through adab, including respect for teachers, politeness, and integrity. Consequently, implementing adab values in education is crucial for developing individuals with noble morals who can contribute to mitigating the global ethical crisis. This study suggests that adab-based education offers a valuable framework for addressing contemporary ethical challenges.

Abstract

This study examines the concept of universal human values within the Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions, exploring their potential to foster global peace and solidarity. Drawing on the profound insights of Frithjof Schuon and Huston Smith, this research highlights the shared core values present across these three distinct religions, despite their differences in form, doctrine, and ritual. These shared values include justice, compassion, respect for human dignity, and responsibility toward others and the environment. Through the lens of the Perennial Philosophy, both thinkers posit that these values are manifestations of a single, underlying Truth common to all religions. Schuon focuses on the transcendental principles underpinning each tradition, emphasizing the metaphysical and esoteric dimensions of these values as reflections of divine truths. For instance, he points to teachings on social justice, respect for human dignity, and responsibility toward nature in Judaism; the emphasis on compassion and solidarity, including the call to love one’s neighbor and even enemies, in Christianity; and the concept of Tawhid, stressing the unity of God and humanity, which underpins teachings on social justice and fair treatment in Islam. Smith, while acknowledging the metaphysical aspects, emphasizes the practical, ethical, and social implications of these values, particularly their role in building a just and harmonious society.

Abstract

This study examines Prophet Muhammad’s role as a transformative agent of social change through the perspectives of Martin Lings and Annemarie Schimmel, two prominent non-Muslim scholars. Beyond his religious leadership, Prophet Muhammad revolutionized 7th-century Arabian society by addressing social inequities, fostering inclusivity, and instituting enduring values of justice, equality, and compassion. In his work Muhammad: His Life Based on the Earliest Sources (1983), Lings portrays the Prophet as a charismatic reformer who advocated for social justice, dismantling tribal divisions and advancing human rights. Lings emphasizes the Prophet’s role in unifying a fragmented society through the ummah—a community bound by faith and equality—and promoting economic equity through zakat and the prohibition of usury. Schimmel, in And Muhammad Is His Messenger (1985), adopts a phenomenological approach, highlighting the Prophet’s integration of spiritual leadership with practical governance. She underscores his role in advancing women’s rights, eradicating systemic oppression, and establishing a moral framework based on divine values. The Constitution of Medina, she argues, was a groundbreaking socio-political contract that promoted a pluralistic and harmonious society. By examining Lings’ historical narrative alongside Schimmel’s spiritual and cultural insights, this study provides a nuanced understanding of Prophet Muhammad’s multidimensional legacy. It positions him as an exemplar of justice and unity, offering valuable lessons for contemporary societies struggling with inequality and division. This interdisciplinary exploration reveals the lasting impact of Prophet Muhammad’s leadership as a unifier and model for ethical governance, transcending both time and cultural boundaries.

Abstract

This study examines the factors that drive the people of Malang City to choose leaders based on religion. This study combines a literature study and in-depth interviews to explore the public perspective on the role of religion in leadership selection. The results of the study indicate that the majority of the people of Malang City tend to choose leaders who share the same religion. However, there is a growing trend, especially among the younger generation, to consider competence and integrity rather than just religious background. Meanwhile, some people, especially from older and more conservative groups, still hold to the belief that co-religious leaders are more trustworthy in implementing policies that follow their religious values. This study also shows that religion plays a significant role in the political preferences of the people of Malang City, where the majority of voters tend to choose candidates who have the same religious background. This decision is driven by the belief that co-religious leaders better understand spiritual needs and are more able to represent the interests of their community. However, this tendency also poses challenges related to inclusion, justice, and social cohesion. This is because the tendency to choose leaders based on religion is closely related to identity politics, where religion becomes the main factor in political mobilization. This identity politics has the potential to strengthen polarization and social fragmentation, as well as hinder social integration. In addition, the exclusive selection of leaders based on religion can ignore important factors such as competence and integrity Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji faktor-faktor yang mendorong masyarakat Kota Malang dalam memilih pemimpin berdasarkan agama.

Abstract

Law No. 3 of 2024 Concerning Villages is introduced as a strategic policy to strengthen village self-reliance, yet its implementation faces persistent challenges from structural poverty and corruption that hinder development. This article evaluates how the maqāṣid al-sharī'ah approach can be utilized to assess the effectiveness of this law in alleviating poverty and mitigating corruption in rural areas. This research employs a qualitative method with a text analysis approach to the law's articles, complemented by a review of secondary data from government reports and relevant academic studies. The analysis reveals that the Village Law holds substantial potential to fulfill maqāṣid al-sharī'ah, particularly in safeguarding wealth (ḥifẓ al-māl) and life (ḥifẓ al-nafs), through transparent village financial management and enhanced community capacity. However, weaknesses in supervision and policy implementation remain significant obstacles to combating corruption. Therefore, more consistent implementation efforts aligned with maqāṣid al-sharī'ah principles are crucial to ensure sustainable, just, and prosperous village development. This study ultimately proposes the concepts of maqāṣid qāryah (at the level of maqāṣid al-khāshāh) and maqāṣid as-siyasatul qāryah (at the level of maqāṣid juz'iyyah) as a robust conceptual framework for addressing poverty and mitigating corruption in these areas.

Abstract

The phenomenon of fatherlessness, defined as the absence of a father's role in a child's life, poses a serious challenge in the modern era. Its impacts include weakened self-control, diminished quality of social relationships, and identity crises in children. This pervasive gap highlights the urgent need to revitalize the father's role, not merely as a material provider, but also as an essential educator and spiritual guide. This research aims to examine the concept of fatherly exemplary behavior as presented in Surah Ash-Shaffat [37]: 102 through Tafsir al-Misbah and integrate it with Michael E. Lamb's theory of father involvement, which encompasses the dimensions of engagement, accessibility, and responsibility. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method utilizing a library research approach and content analysis techniques applied to tafsir texts, Islamic literature, and child developmental psychology theories. The findings indicate that Prophet Ibrahim's exemplary guidance of Ismail reflects ideal fatherly involvement, characterized by dialogical communication, a secure emotional presence, and role modeling in fulfilling spiritual responsibilities. This integration demonstrates that Quranic values align significantly with modern psychological findings, providing a robust conceptual basis for developing a balanced family education model that judiciously incorporates both religious and scientific aspects.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between hijab usage and religiosity among female students at the Institut Ahmad Dahlan (IAD) Probolinggo. It aims to explore the correlation between wearing the hijab and various aspects of religious behavior, including worship practices, understanding of religious values, and social interactions. Employing a qualitative approach with a descriptive phenomenological design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and social media documentation involving students from various academic programs and hijab styles (square hijab, pashmina, and khimar). Informants were purposively selected based on their consistent hijab-wearing behavior, involvement in religious activities, and active presence on social media. The findings indicate that the hijab serves not only as a symbol of Islamic identity but also as an indicator of religiosity. Khimar users, typically from religious family backgrounds and pesantren education, demonstrated greater consistency in religious practices and understanding. In contrast, pashmina and square hijab users tended to be more responsive to social media trends while maintaining modesty. Religious education—particularly within the Islamic Education Department—played a significant role in strengthening religious commitment and influencing the choice of shari'a-compliant hijab styles. Social media also contributed to shaping Islamic identity through da'wah content and Muslim fashion trends. This study concludes that hijab style reflects a complex interaction between social norms, religious values, and individual agency. Islamic identity is dynamically constructed through the internalization of values and the influence of socio-cultural environments.

Abstract

The concept of property ownership in the Qur'an has two main dimensions: individual rights and social responsibility. The Qur'an emphasizes that wealth is a trust from Allah that can be owned personally, but its use must be in accordance with the principles of justice and the public good. This research uses a thematic interpretation method (tafsir maudhu'i), by collecting and analyzing Qur'anic verses related to property ownership, as well as considering historical context (asbāb al-nuzūl) and linguistic aspects. The results of the study show that Islam not only recognizes the individual's right to property, but also requires social responsibility, such as zakat, infaq, and the prohibition of hoarding wealth. Thus, the concept of ownership in Islam is not absolute, but is tied to ethical values and social justice. Property ownership is seen as a means to realize common prosperity and overcome social inequality. The emphasis on a balance between private property and social contribution reflects the main purpose of Islamic law in creating justice and benefit. Therefore, the concept of wealth in the Qur'an is an important foundation for the development of an economic system that is oriented towards value and balance.
