Abstract

This study aims to examine the differences in social status between the natives and the colonizers in the novel Pangeran dari Timur (Prince of the East) by Iksaka Banu and Kurnia Effendi using Ania Loomba's postcolonial perspective. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach. The data sources are quotations from the novel that represent colonial relations, including dialogues, narratives, and scene descriptions. The data were collected through reading and note-taking techniques, then analyzed using the concepts of racial hierarchy, social class, education, and modernity. The results of the study show that colonialism constructed a social status hierarchy that placed European colonizers as the superior group and indigenous people as the inferior group. Education and modernity functioned as means of ideological domination that limited social mobility. The conclusion of the study confirms that colonialism normalized the domination of the colonizers and degraded the dignity of the indigenous people.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the forms of dialectal shift and identify its contributing factors. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected from social media content, podcasts, films, and television programs featuring Makassar artists such as Arief Brata, Denny Sumargo, Indah Permatasari, Eca Aura, Maizura, and Musdalifah. The analysis was conducted using Joshua A. Fishman’s domain theory of language use. The findings reveal three forms of shift: functional, domain, and identity shifts. The main driving factors include urbanization, globalization, and the professional demands of the entertainment industry. The study concludes that this dialect shift is both a sociolinguistic and sociocultural phenomenon, reflecting the marginalization of local dialects in modern public communication.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of visual metaphors in the film Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck through the semiotic approach of Charles Sanders Peirce, revealing the messages embedded within these metaphors while classifying them into five categories as proposed by Noël Carroll: Potrait Komposit, composite construction, Fotomontase, animation category, and superimposition. The research method used is qualitative, with data consisting of visual elements from the film Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck, directed by Sunil Soraya and adapted from the novel by Buya Hamka. Data analysis follows the Miles and Huberman model: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings consist of visual metaphors analyzed using Peirce's triadic sign model (representamen, object, interpretant), uncovering symbolic meanings that enrich the film’s narrative while also identifying the type of visual metaphor. The results show that four out of the five types of visual metaphors appear in the film. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of cinema’s power to convey messages and emotions through visual storytelling
