Abstract

Background: Broiler chicken meat has high nutritional content that makes it susceptible to damage due to the growth and development of microorganisms, which thrive in its nutrient-rich environment. Purpose: The objective of this study aims at determining the impact of refrigerated storage duration prior to frozen storage on the physical quality of broiler chicken breast meat (pH, water binding capacity, and cooking loss). Methods: This study was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 4 (four) treatments and 5 (five) replications. The research treatment was the cooling of chicken breast meat before freezing. The cooling periods were as follows: frozen without direct cooling (P0); 2 hours cooling (P1); 4 hours cooling (P2); 6 hours cooling (P3). The physical quality measurements included pH, water binding capacity, and cooking loss. The data obtained were analyzed by Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and the results that had a significant effect were further tested by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT).  Results: The refrigeration treatment had a significant impact on the pH values, water binding capacity, and cooking loss values (P<0.05). The pH values, water binding capacity, and cooking loss values were the highest in P0 (without cooling), which underwent no cooling prior to freezing. Conclusion: The duration of the refrigeration period prior to freezing had significant impacts such as a decrease in pH values, an increase in water binding capacity, and a decrease in cooking loss values of the broiler chicken breast meat. The application of a six-hour refrigeration period prior to frozen storage was observed to produce pH values, water binding capacity, and cooking loss values that remained within the range of good physical quality of broiler chicken breast meat.

Abstract

Background: During the harvest season, rice straw can be one of the agricultural wastes available in large quantities. If preserved by drying in the sun, then stored in a place procted from rain, the material can be used as a reserve of animal feed during the dry season. To improve the nutritional quality of west example the straw, it is necessary to process it by fermentation, apart from that you can also add legumes to animal feed. To increase efficiency in feeding livestock, it is best to make the feed in wafer form. Wafers are a technology that is quite effective in maintaining the continuity of animal feed, especially during the dry season. Purpose: The objective of this study was to ascertain the optimal concentration of Tiwai onion nano particles and how their feeding to broiler chickens affects broiler performance. Methods: Using a completely randomised complete block design (CRD), this study included five replicates and five treatments, each consisting of 4 broilers and reared until 35 days of age. Feed consumption, body weight gain, feed conversion, final body weight, and mortality were the parameters of the study. Onion tiwai nanoparticles were administered at P0 which is the control or without the administration of nano particles. P1 0.2%, P2 0.4%, P3 0.6% and P4 (0.8%) contained tiwai onion. The data obtained were analysed using One Way Anova followed by Duncan's Test to examine the values of feed consumption, body weight gain, feed conversion, final body weight, and mortality. Abstract

Background: Broiler chickens, a type of poultry, are utilized as a relatively cheaper and easily accessible source of high-quality animal protein. Increasing livestock productivity requires an effort to find alternative feed sources. Feed is produced in large quantities and contains high nutrients. An alternative that can be used is to utilise local feed ingredients that contain tiwai onion (Eleutherine americana Merr). Abstract

Background: Schistosomiasis is endemic in Central Sulawesi, namely in Lindu, Bada, and Napu Valley. In the Napu Valley, schistosomiasis not only attacks humans but also mammals such as cattle and buffalo. Purpose: The aim of this research was to determine the prevalence of schistosomiasis in cattle (Bos sp) and buffalo (Bubalus sp.) in extensive livestock systems in the Napu Valley, Central Sulawesi. Methods: Sampling of cow and buffalo feces. Next, a stool examination was carried out to see the type of worm eggs microscopically using the Kato-Katz method at the Schistosomiasis Laboratory of the North Lore Health Service, Poso Regency. The number of samples used was 10 each, consisting of female cows, male cows, female calf cows, and male calf cows, as well as female buffaloes, male buffaloes, female calf buffaloes, and male calf buffaloes. Results: The research results found more than 1 species of worm eggs that infect cattle and buffalo, namely Schistosoma japonicum, Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, and hookworm. The prevalence of schistosomiasis is higher in cows compared to buffalo; this is because cows have more attack power with more pores, so cows are more easily infected by parasites. Apart from that, cows also roam further in search of food than buffalo. When it rains, most buffalo just lie in a wallow. Unlike cows, even though it rains, cows still walk to look for food. Conclusion: The conclusion is that the prevalence of schistosomiasis is more common in cattle, namely 11 positive cases, and in buffalo there are only 2 positive cases.

Abstract

Background: Bali cattle are one of the most prominent local cattle breeds widely raised by the people of Indonesia. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the semen quality of Bali cattle produced during the dry and rainy seasons at the South Sulawesi Regional Artificial Insemination Centre (RAIC). Methods: The data of this study were obtained from secondary data from the production records taken by purposive sampling of 5 Bali bulls for 12 months, categorized into the rainy season (May - October 2019) and the dry season (November 2019 - April 2020). The study parameters included semen volume (ml), sperm concentration (10 × 10⁶/ml), sperm motility (%), and post-thawing motility (%). Results: The results indicated that semen volume was not significantly affected by seasonality (P > 0.05). However, sperm concentration, sperm motility, and post-thawing motility were significantly higher during the dry season than in the rainy season (P < 0.05). It can be concluded that the quality of Bali bull semen is superior during the dry season compared to the rainy season. Conclusion: The findings of this study can be applied to the management of Bali cattle breeding, particularly in organizing semen collection schedules and improving reproductive quality through the management of environmental factors and feed.
