Abstract

Abstract Background: According to the WHO, the prevalence of dental caries is 81.5% in children aged 3-4 years, 92.6% in those aged 5-9 years, and 90.2% in the 5-year age group. Diet and nutrition can influence oral health, including dental caries, which in turn affects overall health, depending on the types of food consumed. Damage to teeth causes loss of chewing ability in children (masticatory dysfunction), impacting appetite, food intake, and digestion, and causes stunted growth, thus affecting children's eating patterns. This study aims to analyze the relationship between dental caries and stunting in SAD toddlers. Method: This cross-sectional study included 40 children under five years old, selected through stratified random sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires, dental exams, and anthropometry, and analyzed with the Chi-square test. Results: Research found 20.0% incidence of stunting, 32.5% dental caries, and 40% high cariogenic diet. Among SAD toddlers in Muaro Jambi, a significant relationship was found between high cariogenic food consumption patterns and dental caries, as well as stunting. Conclusion: A high cariogenic diet is a contributing factor to dental caries, which is linked to the incidence of stunting in SAD toddlers.

Abstract

Background: Stunting has serious impacts, including impaired brain development leading to reduced intelligence, increased risk of disease, and higher risk of mortality. Stunting can occur during pregnancy due to inadequate nutritional intake, improper dietary patterns, and low-quality food, all of which hinder a child's growth. Efforts to prevent stunting have been implemented since pregnancy, especially during the first 1,000 days of life (HPK). Method: This research uses the Research and Development (R&D) method according to Borg and Gall (2003) with the following stages: 1) Identifying potential problems, 2) Data collection, 3) Product design planning, 4) Product creation, 5) Development: Internal testing. Internal testing involves expert validation to assess the feasibility of the product before it is used by the public, as well as user validation to ensure it is suitable for effectiveness testing in further research. Results: This study shows that the "Monitoring Book for Maternal Dental Health to Prevent the Risk of Stunting" has a very high feasibility level based on expert validation (96%) and respondent validation (86%). Conclusion: The book is considered effective and easy to understand by users. It is highly needed among the community and healthcare workers to raise awareness among pregnant women about the importance of maintaining oral and dental health to prevent the risk of stunting. The book is also considered practical for use as educational material at home.

Abstract

Background: The South Sumatra Health Office (2022) reported that the exclusive breastfeeding rate in OKI Regency was 71.0%, which is still below the national target of 80%. The purpose of this study was to identify the sources of support and their relationship with maternal behavior in exclusive breastfeeding. Method: This study used a qualitative research design involving 12 mothers with infants aged 6-12 months as key informants, as well as 11 expert informants, including the head of the puskesmas, the nutrition program coordinator, 3 midwives, and 6 posyandu cadres. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. Source and data triangulation were used for validation. Results: Parents supported early complementary feeding by recommending items like Zamzam water, coffee, bananas, porridge, rice with sugar, and honey. Although health workers emphasized exclusive breastfeeding, the absence of visual aids like videos limited the impact. To improve exclusive breastfeeding, stronger educational efforts and diverse media use in outreach are essential. Conclusion: The results indicated that parents provided support for early complementary feeding, recommending items such as Zamzam water, coffee, pisang kepok (a type of banana), porridge, rice with sugar, and honey. Health workers had communicated the importance of exclusive breastfeeding persuasively, but the lack of visual aids, such as educational videos, during socialization and counseling sessions may have reduced the effectiveness of information delivery. To enhance exclusive breastfeeding practices, more intensive educational efforts and the use of varied media in health worker outreach to breastfeeding mothers are needed.

Abstract

Background: Bengkal leaves (Nauclea orientalis L.) is a plant that contains flavonoids as active substances to reduce blood glucose levels (antidiabetic). The use of a decoction of bengkal leaves (Nauclea orientalis L.) which has been used in the community as an antidiabetic has not yet been determined for its pharmacological activity. This research was conducted to test the activity of Bengkal leaf fractions (Nauclea orientalis L.) which were used as antidiabetic in male white mice that had been previously induced with alloxan. Method: This research is a quasi-experimental research using the static-group comparison design. The test animals used were 35 male white mice which were divided into 7 groups, namely negative control group (tragacanth), positive control group (alloxan), comparison group (glibenclamide), ethanol extract group, n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate and Bengkal leaf water at a dose of 150mg/kgBW. After that, testing was carried out by checking the blood glucose levels of the mice starting from days 1, 3 to 7. Followed by a one-way ANOVA statistical test to obtain significant results on which day was the most effective. Then use the post hoc Duncan test to find out the best fraction that has an effect close to glibenclamide 5 mg. So it will be known whether the Bengkal leaf fraction (Nauclea orientalis L.) is effective as an antidiabetic. In the end, we will find out whether the Bengkal leaf fraction can be used as an antidiabetic drug. Results: There is antidiabetic activity after administration of various fractions of Bengkal leaves to male white mice induced by alloxan. Conclusion: Administration of ethyl acetate fraction of Bengkal leaves has antidiabetic activity in male white mice almost equivalent to glibenclamide. Bengkal leaf fraction has potential as an antidiabetic drug.

Abstract

Background: The behavior of Indonesian children in brushing their teeth remains low, which is attributed to a lack of knowledge on how to maintain dental and oral health. One way to improve this knowledge is through counseling, and video media is one such tool that combines two elements, sound and images, making it more effective in conveying information. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of video media counseling in enhancing knowledge and brushing behavior among early childhood children, starting from the kindergarten level. Method: The research uses a literature review method involving the collection, reading, and management of bibliographic data. This approach helps researchers categorize and organize various sources, leading to a deeper understanding of the research topic. Results: The study involving 16 control and 16 treatment samples from a kindergarten in Jambi revealed balanced gender distributions and similar age ranges across groups. Normality tests confirmed that the data for dental and oral health knowledge were normally distributed, justifying the use of paired and independent sample t-tests. The results showed a significant increase in knowledge scores from pre-test to post-test in both groups, with the Kesgilut video treatment resulting in a notably greater improvement compared to the control group. This indicates that the Kesgilut video was more effective in enhancing dental health knowledge. Interactive educational methods, like video and storytelling, proved to be effective tools in engaging children and improving their understanding of health practices, aligning with previous research on the benefits of such methods for young learners Conclusion: The Kesgilut video was more effective in improving dental and oral health knowledge among the kindergarten children compared to the control group.
