Abstract

Household waste is an environmental problem that continues to increase along with population growth and changes in people's lifestyles. Based on data from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) in 2023, Indonesia produces around 67.8 million tons of waste annually, of which around 37.3% comes from household waste. Ironically, most of this waste has not been managed properly, causing various negative impacts, such as environmental pollution, health problems, and disasters such as floods. Household waste management remains a problem in Talimbaru Village, Barusjahe District, Karo Regency due to the community's lack of knowledge in sorting and utilizing waste. This community service activity aims to improve community knowledge, attitudes, and actions through counseling and training on managing organic and inorganic waste into economically valuable products. The methods used include counseling, demonstrations of composting and ecobrick making, hands-on practice, and evaluation using pre-tests and post-tests for 80 participants. The results of the activity showed an increase in community knowledge from the majority in the low category to all participants in the high category after the training. Positive attitudes and community actions regarding waste management have also increased, marked by the implementation of waste sorting, composting, and the utilization of plastic waste to create ecobricks. These activities effectively increase community capacity in household waste management and support the creation of a cleaner, healthier, and more economically valuable environment.

Abstract

Abstract

This community service program was conducted by Kelompok 4 Regu B in Kampung Melayu, Kelurahan Batu Besar, Kecamatan Nongsa, Batam, with the theme of developing a local human resource talent ecosystem for social progress and economic independence. The program implemented two work activities through a participatory assistance approach consisting of observation, understanding, planning, action, and reflection stages. The first activity focused on branding and promotional assistance for two home-based micro enterprises, namely a breakfast stall and a concrete-roster business, through logo creation, promotional banners, menu and catalogue design, and digital map registration. The second activity involved door-to-door education on digital and household financial literacy, along with the distribution of organic and non-organic waste bins as appropriate technology support. The results indicate that both enterprises achieved clearer brand identities and more attractive promotional media, while residents demonstrated improved digital awareness and better household financial management practices through income, expense, and savings records. These findings show that local talent ecosystem development requires two complementary strategies: strengthening micro-enterprise identity and market access, as well as improving household digital and financial literacy through active community participation.

Abstract

Sexual violence against children is a serious issue that affects their physical, psychological, and social development. Limited knowledge of self-protection increases children's vulnerability to sexual abuse, highlighting the need for age-appropriate preventive education. This community service program aimed to improve elementary school students' knowledge and self-protection skills through the "Dare to Say No" program. The activity was conducted at SDN 010 Batam Kota, Belian District, Batam City, involving 40 students from grades IV, V, and VI. The program employed observation, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), interactive education, demonstrations, role-playing, and pretest-posttest evaluations. The implementation adopted a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach with community organizing strategies involving school principals, teachers, and students throughout the program. The results demonstrated a significant improvement in participants' knowledge, with the average score increasing from 58.25 in the pretest to 86.75 in the posttest. Students also showed better understanding of safe and unsafe touch, greater confidence in refusing inappropriate behavior, and increased awareness of reporting incidents to trusted adults. Furthermore, the program strengthened teachers' roles in child protection education and encouraged the school's commitment to creating a safe and child-friendly learning environment. Overall, the "Dare to Say No" program proved effective in enhancing children's knowledge, self-protection skills, and awareness regarding sexual violence prevention. Sustainable implementation involving schools, parents, health professionals, and other stakeholders is recommended to reinforce school-based child protection systems.

Abstract

The high prevalence of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and HIV in Batam City represents a serious health issue driven by low adolescent sexual health literacy and persistent social taboos. This community service activity aimed to enhance students' knowledge, awareness, and preventive understanding regarding STIs through adolescent-friendly interactive media approaches. The intervention involved 55 students serving as committee members of the Youth Red Cross (PMR) and Student Council (OSIS) at SMAN 23 Batam. The implementation method combined PowerPoint presentations, educational animated videos, game-based learning simulations, icebreakers, and interactive Q&A sessions. Program success was quantitatively evaluated using a One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design and analyzed via a Paired Samples T-Test. The findings revealed a significant increase in participants' understanding before and after the intervention. The mean knowledge score rose markedly from 52.40 (SD = 11.25) during the pre-test to 88.60 (SD = 8.42) in the post-test, with a p-value < 0.001. The minimum score increased from 30.00 to 70.00, while the maximum score reached a perfect 100.00. The decrease in standard deviation indicated a more homogeneous distribution of knowledge at a higher level of understanding. These findings demonstrate that visual-interactive educational interventions effectively improve reproductive health literacy, overcome psychological barriers, and shift social taboos into scientific understanding that fosters STI prevention behaviors among Generation Z.

Abstract

Primary dysmenorrhea is one of the reproductive health problems that adolescent girls often experience and can interfere with daily activities. Lack of knowledge about non-pharmacological treatment causes many adolescents to not be able to cope with menstrual pain independently. This community service activity aims to increase the knowledge of young women about giving warm compresses as a simple method to reduce the intensity of primary dysmenorrhea pain. The activity will be held on May 14, 2026 at PMB Veronika Sinaga, Batam City with a target of 12 young women aged 13–18 years. The implementation method is in the form of health counseling through lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and post-test evaluations. The results of the activity showed that all participants participated in the activity until it was finished, actively participated, and 100% obtained a post-test score of ≥70. The education provided increased participants' understanding of the meaning of dysmenorrhea, the benefits of warm compresses, how to use them correctly, and signs that require examination of health workers. This activity proves that health counseling is effective in increasing the knowledge of adolescent girls in handling dysmenorrhea independently. Increased knowledge is expected to encourage the appropriate application of warm compresses to reduce menstrual pain complaints and improve quality of life. Reproductive health education activities like this need to be carried out in a sustainable manner with the active role of health workers, especially midwives, in providing promotive and preventive education.

Abstract

Food security and energy independence are key pillars of sustainable village development toward the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision. The "Lestari Farm" Farmers Group in Karanganyar Village, Plupuh, Sragen, faces structural constraints in expanding its integrated hydroponic and catfish aquaculture operations. Major challenges include high electricity costs for circulation pumps (accounting for 30%–35% of total operational expenses), commodity mortality risks caused by power outages, uncontrolled water quality (yielding predominantly Grade B/C products), and manual, unsegregated financial management. This partnership program aims to implement "SI-HEBAT" (Sistem Hidroponik & Perikanan Energi Baru Terbarukan / Renewable Energy Hydroponic & Fishery System) technology, which integrates a 300 Wp off-grid solar power system with an Internet of Things (IoT) ESP32-based automated nutrient control system. The methodology employed is Participatory Action Research (PAR), encompassing stages of community engagement, technology fabrication, technical training, digital management mentoring, and the establishment of a sustainability unit. The results demonstrate 100% efficiency in operational electricity costs, a reduction in crop/fish mortality rates to less than 5%, and a quality upgrade to predominantly uniform Grade A harvests. Furthermore, the partner successfully adopted digital financial bookkeeping via an app and launched rebranded, labeled product packaging.

Abstract

Neonatal asphyxia remains one of the leading causes of neonatal mortality in Indonesia, and timely, competent resuscitation by nurses is critical to improving newborn survival. This community service activity aimed to strengthen nurses' neonatal resuscitation competency through an intensive training program based on the 2025 American Heart Association (AHA) and American Academy of Pediatrics Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care. The training was conducted for 25 nurses working in the perinatology, delivery room, and neonatal intensive care unit of Awal Bros Batam Hospital using a one-group pretest-posttest design, combining lectures, algorithm-based discussion, and high-fidelity manikin simulation covering the Newborn Chain of Care, initial steps of resuscitation, positive-pressure ventilation, chest compression, and updated umbilical cord management recommendations. Results showed a significant increase in nurses' knowledge and skill scores after training, along with improved self-confidence in managing simulated neonatal emergencies. This activity demonstrates that structured, guideline-based simulation training is an effective and feasible strategy to enhance nurses' readiness in delivering safe, standardized neonatal resuscitation, supporting broader efforts to reduce neonatal mortality.

Abstract

Utilization of Family Medicinal Plants (TOGA) is a strategy that is in line with the concept back to nature and family health independence. Rural communities' dependence on synthetic chemical drugs often faces obstacles such as limited access, high costs, and potential side effects, even though Indonesia is rich in medicinal plant biodiversity that has not been optimally utilized. This Community Service (PkM) activity aims to improve the health and economic independence of residents of Pungkit Village, Lopok District, through the optimization of TOGA. The implementation method is based on structured empowerment that includes four main stages: socialization of the importance of "living pharmacies", training in adaptive organic cultivation techniques (using pots, polybags, and vertical culture), education on pre-harvest and post-harvest processing based on hygienic science (such as making dried simplicia, tea bags, and instant powder), and program evaluation. This activity was attended by 45 participants consisting of Posyandu cadres, health cadres, and representatives of heads of families. The results of the activity showed a significant increase in participants' understanding and skills, as seen from the increase in the average evaluation score from 28.75% inpre-testto 86.75% at post-test(increased by 58%). Utilizing yards as TOGA gardens has been proven to support the concept of safe and affordable self-medication, strengthen community social interactions, and open up creative economic opportunities for housewives through local and online marketing of herbal products. The sustainability of this program relies heavily on the commitment of local cadre groups and regular mentoring from academics, village governments, and local community health centers.

Abstract

Violence in higher education remains a serious issue that may threaten students’ safety, well-being, and the quality of the academic environment. Strengthening students’ understanding of violence prevention and management is therefore essential to support the implementation of a safe and inclusive campus policy. This community service activity aimed to strengthen first-year students’ understanding of the Prevention and Management of Violence in Higher Education (PPKPT) through a socialization program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Gombong. The activity was conducted on 26 January 2026 involving 115 first-semester students using a lecture-based approach followed by interactive discussions. Participants’ understanding was evaluated through pre-test and post-test assessments. The evaluation results showed that the average score increased from 61.4 before the activity to 84.8 after the activity, while the proportion of participants achieving a minimum score of 75 increased from 27.8% to 87.8%. These findings indicate that the socialization program effectively improved students’ understanding of violence prevention, reporting mechanisms, and their role in creating a safe, respectful, and inclusive academic environment. Educational socialization is therefore an effective preventive strategy for supporting the implementation of violence prevention policies in higher education.
