Abstract

Community service is an implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, serving as a bridge between academic knowledge and the actual needs of society through relevant, participatory, and sustainable empowerment programs. However, the implementation of Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) frequently encounters challenges because program planning is not always based on a systematic assessment of community needs, resulting in interventions that are less effective in addressing local issues. This article aims to describe the implementation of a multidisciplinary Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) program based on community needs assessment as a strategy for community empowerment in Pandu Village, Cerme District, Gresik Regency. The community service program adopted a community needs assessment approach consisting of five stages: needs identification through field observations, interviews, focus group discussions with community members, and coordination with the village government; needs analysis using the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) framework; development of a Planning of Action (PoA); program implementation; and monitoring and evaluation. The program covered four major areas: economic development through business branding assistance and business banner design for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs); education through English learning activities and the development of educational learning media for early childhood students; social development through awareness campaigns and the preparation of educational modules on drug abuse prevention; and governance through coordination with the village government and partner institutions. The results demonstrated that a needs assessment–based approach produced programs that were better aligned with community conditions and priorities. Collaboration among the village government, educational institutions, MSMEs, university students, and community members enhanced program effectiveness, as reflected in the development of MSME promotional media, educational learning materials, educational modules, and increased community participation throughout the activities. Therefore, a community needs assessment–based approach proved effective in improving the relevance, effectiveness, and sustainability of community service programs.

Abstract

Indonesia faces a triple burden of malnutrition, including anemia, chronic energy deficiency, and obesity among women. In 2024, anemia prevalence reached 30.7%, while SDG 2025 data reported that 28% of women experienced malnutrition. This study aimed to improve pregnant women’s knowledge of triple burden prevention through the "Nutrition for the First 1,000 Days of Life" flipbook in Bangun Rejo Village. A pre-experimental study was conducted from January to April 2026 involving 30 pregnant women selected through purposive sampling. The intervention consisted of socialization, training, technology implementation, mentoring, and evaluation. Knowledge was measured using a questionnaire and analyzed with the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. Knowledge scores significantly improved after the intervention (p = 0.000; p < 0.05), demonstrating the effectiveness of the flipbook as a nutrition education medium. The flipbook effectively increased pregnant women’s knowledge regarding triple burden prevention. The flipbook should be utilized as an educational medium to improve maternal nutritional knowledge and support healthy pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease characterized by high blood sugar levels due to problems with insulin production or function. In managing it, patients do not rely solely on medication but also need to properly manage their diet. Diet education is an important component to help patients understand the types, amounts, and timing of foods so that blood sugar levels can be well controlled. Patients' knowledge about a diabetes diet includes understanding recommended foods, foods that should be limited, portion control, and the importance of a balanced diet. Patients who are well-informed tend to be better at choosing healthy foods, reducing excessive sugar intake, and maintaining regular eating habits. On the other hand, a lack of knowledge can lead to uncontrolled eating patterns and increase the risk of diabetes complications. Diet adherence is the behavior of patients in following the eating instructions that have been given by. Improving these two aspects is expected to help control blood sugar levels, reduce the risk of complications, and improve the quality of life for patients with diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

Oral health is an integral part of general health and plays an essential role in improving people's quality of life. Coastal fishing communities are at higher risk of experiencing oral health problems due to limited knowledge, inadequate oral hygiene practices, and restricted access to dental health services. This community service program aimed to improve the knowledge, awareness, and skills of coastal communities in maintaining oral health through the Senyum Pesisir (Coastal Smile) program conducted in Bonto Mate'ne Village, Marusu District, Maros Regency. The program employed oral health education, tooth-brushing demonstrations using dental phantom models, oral health examinations, supervised tooth-brushing practice, and evaluation through pre-test and post-test questionnaires. The activities were implemented through preparation, implementation, evaluation, and follow-up stages involving lecturers, students, village officials, community health center personnel, and local residents. The results indicated an improvement in participants' knowledge and understanding regarding the importance of oral health, proper tooth-brushing techniques and timing, and the importance of regular dental check-ups. Participants also demonstrated a high level of enthusiasm and were able to correctly perform tooth-brushing techniques after the educational intervention. This program is expected to serve as a sustainable promotive and preventive strategy to improve the oral health status of coastal communities through collaboration among higher education institutions, local government, health professionals, and the community.

Abstract

The competency gap between university graduates and industrial requirements remains a significant challenge in preparing job-ready human resources, particularly in the welding sector. One of the essential competencies required by industry is the ability to understand and interpret the Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) as the primary document governing welding operations in accordance with international standards. This community service program aimed to enhance students' competencies in understanding the concepts, structure, and implementation of WPS to improve their readiness for the industrial workforce. The program was organized by the Department of Logistics Engineering and the Department of Naval Architecture Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology, Universitas Ibnu Sina, in collaboration with the Alumni Association of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (IKA ITS), using a Participatory Training and Practice-Based Learning approach. The activities included competency needs assessment, lectures on WPS, Procedure Qualification Record (PQR), Welder Performance Qualification (WPQ), ASME Section IX and AWS D1.1 standards, industrial case studies, practical interpretation of WPS documents, interactive discussions, and program evaluation. The results demonstrated that participants significantly improved their understanding of WPS functions, the relationship between WPS and PQR, welding parameters, and the application of international standards in fabrication processes. The program also enhanced participants' awareness of industrial competency requirements while strengthening collaboration between higher education institutions and industry practitioners. The WPS training proved to be an effective approach for improving students' technical competencies, reducing the gap between academic learning and industrial practice, and supporting graduate readiness for careers in manufacturing, construction, oil and gas, and shipbuilding industries.

Abstract

The Borobudur area, Magelang Regency, has experienced a significant decline in tourist visits following the implementation of stricter management regulations for Borobudur Temple, including daily visitor quotas, session-based visiting systems, mandatory upanat sandal usage (since December 2023), and perceptions of high ticket prices. Tourist visits declined by more than 50 percent during the 2025 Eid holiday period compared to the previous year, impacting the entire tourism supply chain in the area. One of the identified root causes is the unpreparedness of local tourism human resources (HR) in adapting to regulatory changes and service standards. This community service activity was conducted by the STIEPARI Semarang lecturers' team through structured mentoring of 100 tourism practitioners from seven HR groups: tour guides, homestay managers, tourism transportation managers, souvenir centre managers, food and beverage managers, tourism destination managers, and Balkondes managers. The activity ran over three months (March–May 2026) using interactive lectures, workshops, demonstrations, FGDs, field simulations, and role plays, with pre- and post-test evaluations. Results showed an average competency improvement of 29.7 percent (from 49.2% to 78.9%), with the highest improvement among Balkondes managers (34.4%) and souvenir centre managers (32.6%). In addition to individual competency gains, the activity produced an institutional outcome: the establishment of the Borobudur Cross-Sector Tourism Community Forum as a coordination platform for sustainable tourism ecosystem development in the Borobudur area.
