Abstract

This article aims at providing a summary of various other studies that investigate how implementing Problem-Based Learning Approach can help students improve their speaking achievement. The method of study that was utilized was called a literature review, and it began with the process of seeking for research questions, searching for literature, evaluating data, and then analyzing it. After doing a search for research publications, the researcher came across five articles, then analyzed and contrasted with one another. This literature analysis came to the conclusion that the findings of the study showed that students not only improved their speaking performance after being treated through PBL activities, but also exhibited a more favorable behavioral, cognitive, and affective attitude toward English Language Learning (ELL). This was observed in the context of the study's findings that students demonstrated better speaking performance after being treated through PBL activities. PBL as a learning model for English was appropriate to make students fluent in communicating in English. Besides, PBL can also make students more active, confident, and enjoyable. As a result, problem-based learning may be one of the appropriate teaching approaches to increase students' capacity to speak English. This is because problem-based learning provides students with the opportunity to relate themselves to real-life challenges that require real-life answers.

By using Project-based learning, the students can explore their creativity in learning writing skills such as expository, descriptive, persuasive, and narrative writing. In maritime higher education as a vocational higher education in Indonesia, implementing project-based learning hopefully can help the students to improve their ability in writing to prepare for their future when they are working in their workplace, they will be familiar and get easy to do their job. The topics of the texts can be made close to future workplace needs. The researchers hope that this research will be useful for language lecturers as an idea to develop their teaching model, especially in teaching English as a Foreign Language.

Abstract

The Banjar people in South Kalimantan have a tradition of putting their children to sleep in a swing while chanting a rhythmic shalawat of Banjar poetry called Ma'ayun Anak. This tradition is integrated into the Ba'ayun Mulud tradition which is a cultural tradition of the Banjar people to ma'ayun a child in the month of Maulid or Rabiul Awwal in the Islamic calendar (Hijriyah) to celebrate the birthday of Rasulullah Muhammad Shalallahu 'Alaihi Wassalam. This cultural reflection collaborated and was expressed in a new dance creation entitled "Japin Ayun Anak" in 2018 by the Posko La Bastari Kandangan, Hulu Sungai Selatan Regency. This article is descriptive qualitative using an ethnochoreological approach to obtain descriptions, meanings and values in the choreography of this dance which includes conceptualized motion, space and time as well as classification of movement types. There are 15 variations of motion in this dance that reflect important messages for appreciators, including regarding the love of parents for their children and the actualization of Muslim gratitude for the birth of Muhammad Shalallahu 'Alaihi Wassalam, in which mothers rock their children accompanied by the Prophet's blessings and prayers for his son. It is hoped that the child who is rocked will inherit the glory of the Prophet Muhammad Shalallahu 'Alaihi Wassalam and obtain safety in this world and in the hereafter.

Abstract

Based on the evaluation of the implementation of English Medium Instruction (EMI) Class since 2021-2022 at several departments of a private university in East Java, it can be found that content lecturers’ challenge is how to engage students and facilitate students in understanding the material. Therefore, English specialists or lecturers held EMI lecturer training purposed to content subjects who teach in EMI classes. This study offers an overview of how a private university's EMI training program was designed. Some of the steps taken in this process are as follows: introducing EMI implementation (teaching methodology, the use of multimodal and interactive teaching), training, and content subject practicing or teaching demonstration. This study was done by analyzing EMI lecturers’ attitude toward EMI and their perceptions after they participated in joining the training. The findings showed that EMI training is very beneficial for content subjects to boost and improve their quality in the teaching process.
