Abstract

The design of costumes holds a crucial role in visualizing the social status of characters in Javanese dance. By employing symbolic systems, costume design conveys this status to the audience. This study investigates the relationship between costume design and the depiction of social status in Javanese dance at Pura Mangkunegaran. Utilizing a qualitative methodology with an ethnocoreological approach, the research draws on a literature review as its primary data source. This review involves analyzing various documents, photographs, and videos. The findings indicate that accessories and attributes within costume design are integral to the symbolic system that represents social status. As an ethnic dance, the costume design in Mangkunegaran dance embodies the ethical and ethno-aesthetic values of the community, reflecting the life, worldview, and cultural expressions of the Javanese people. These values may evolve over time as the community’s perspectives shift.

Abstract

The philosophical foundation of Pancasila, comprised of five principles, plays a significant role in shaping Indonesia's education system. These principles guide curriculum design, implementation, and evaluation, reflecting the nation's educational goals and desired student outcomes. This paper examines the philosophical underpinnings of Pancasila, with a focus on content and graduate competence standards, examining their relationship with educational objectives and their implications for the national curriculum. Utilizing a literature review methodology, the research highlights the critical influence of Pancasila on curriculum development and educational planning in Indonesia. The findings indicate that Pancasila serves as a central philosophical framework guiding Indonesia's national education system, with a particular emphasis on character education, tolerance, citizenship education, and inclusive learning. The study reviews the evolution of content and graduate competence standards in Indonesian education, drawing attention to changes in government regulations and the philosophical assumptions of Pancasila. However, further research is recommended to explore the influence of these assumptions on other educational standards.

Abstract

The tradition of nyumbang has long functioned as a social safety net within Javanese society. However, modernity has transformed the essence of nyumbang, a shift clearly portrayed in the film Nyumbang. This study investigates how the film captures the evolving discourse of nyumbang and its changing meaning over time. By employing Foucauldian Discourse Analysis (FDA), the research examines into how the film utilises discourse as a tool for both knowledge and power, thereby revealing underlying shifts in societal dynamics. This approach uniquely uncovers the interplay between power structures and cultural practices, aspects that might be overlooked by other methodologies. The analysis identifies both dominant and counter-discourses, particularly through the narratives and dialogues of the characters. Notably, characters from lower social strata challenge traditional nyumbang practice, signalling the emergence of counter-discourse. The dominant discourse portrays nyumbang as a social obligation enforced by prevailing cultural norms, while the counter-discourse advocates for a reevaluation of this practice in light of modern societal values. The study concludes that the film Nyumbang effectively addresses the complexities of maintaining tradition amidst the significant societal changes brought on by modernity, including the tensions between traditional expectations and the reality of economic reciprocity.

Abstract

The Limola language is a minority language spoken in South Sulawesi Province. Based on the number of speakers, which ranges between 100 and 600, the Limola language is at risk. This situation underscores the urgent need for preservation efforts. One approach to preserving the language is by assessing its vitality. The assessment of the Limola language aims to evaluate its current status and identify factors contributing to its vitality. These findings will inform future language preservation strategies. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, and focus group discussions. Data analysis is based on UNESCO’s nine language vitality factors. The results indicate that Limola is classified as critically endangered, primarily because the To Limola community predominantly uses the Tae language for daily communication. The Limola language is mainly spoken by middle-aged and older generations, with limited documentation available. This highlights the urgent need for written resources as part of preventive measures to avoid its extinction.

Abstract

Multicultural education and local wisdom function as crucial social assets in promoting unity within diverse societies. Indonesia, a country rich in ethnic diversity, possesses abundant local wisdom, particularly within the Minangkabau community of West Sumatra. This study examines the integration of Minangkabau local wisdom into the core elements of multicultural education, focusing on areas such as cultural awareness, sensitivity, cross-cultural communication, critical thinking, reflection, and cultural competence. Grounded in Vygotsky’s theory of learning as a process of social and cultural adaptation, this research adopts a qualitative methodology, utilizing in-depth interviews and focus group discussions for data collection. The analysis, carried out through coding, data reduction, and interpretation, focuses on the Minangkabau community in Sungai Sirah Village, Silaut District, a transmigration area in West Sumatra. The findings reveal that the Minangkabau community’s approach to multicultural education is deeply embedded in an awareness of the importance of active participation in multicultural settings. This process is reinforced by the leadership of local figures and enriched by the community’s historical, economic, and cultural heritage. The study offers valuable insights for developing a comprehensive model of multicultural education that can be applied in both formal and informal contexts, ultimately fostering social cohesion and inclusivity.

Abstract

This article examines two performance models of Reyog Ponorogo: the festival model and the obyokan model. These two competing models represent differing perspectives on one side, the interests of the artists and the community, and on the other, the interests of the state. By applying cultural studies theories, particularly those of representation and hegemony, this study analyzes data collected through observations of Reyog performances at both festival and obyokan events, as well as interviews with artists and community members. The findings reveal that the obyokan model emphasizes an egalitarian spirit, allowing artists greater aesthetic freedom and providing the community with a sense of belonging in Reyog culture. In contrast, the festival model has historically been associated with the state's efforts to impose order on Reyogartists and choreographies, while simultaneously promoting tourism in Ponorogo.

Abstract

Canthik Kiai Rajamala is one of the heirlooms owned by the Keraton Kasunanan Surakarta. There are two Canthik Kiai Rajamala, each stored in the Keraton Surakarta Museum and the Radya Pustaka Museum. Surakarta is the only region traversed by the Bengawan Solo River that possesses a canthik, making it a distinctive and unique cultural heritage for the people of Surakarta. This research addresses the issue of how the meaning and value construction of Canthik Kiai Rajamala can be interpreted through Pierce's semiotic triangle theory. Additionally, this study examines how contemporary Surakarta society perceives the Canthik Kiai Rajamala. The objective of this research is to identify the cultural meanings and values of Canthik Kiai Rajamala, which are preserved in the Keraton Surakarta Museum and the Radya Pustaka Museum. The interpretation of the object involves the community’s perspective on CanthikKiai Rajamala, from its creation and use to its current status as a museum artifact. This study also focuses on the local wisdom system of Surakarta society in interpreting the cultural traditions associated with Canthik Kiai Rajamala, and its relationship with the environment and local customary community.

Abstract

Beauty is often perceived as a neutral concept; however, perceptions of beauty vary across different societies. In Indonesia, for instance, beauty is frequently associated with having fair skin and a slim physique. Consequently, women who do not meet these criteria are often deemed unattractive. Furthermore, beauty is commonly linked to a woman's success. This issue is critically examined in the 2019 film in Ernest Prakasa, Imperfect: Karier, Cinta & Timbangan, which centers on the life of a young woman named Rara, who is depicted as dark-skinned and slightly overweight. The societal pressures she faces to conform to prevailing beauty standards in pursuit of her dreams highlight the problematic nature of these standards. Additionally, the film portrays how even characters like Lulu and Debby, who fit the conventional beauty mold, are not immune to criticism. This study aims to explore the problematic nature of beauty standards and their impact on women, employing Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of capital and symbolic violence. The research concludes that beauty standards create unfair situations for women, perpetuating unattainable ideals that disproportionately affect them.

Abstract

The presence of archaeological sites, specifically caves, in North Konawe Regency provides evidence of human habitation dating back to prehistoric times. Despite the challenges posed by difficult terrain and limited access, which hinder archaeological research, the Gua Ladori site in Bendewuta Village, Oheo District, North Konawe, is notable for its rich assemblage of artifacts. This study aims to identify the archaeological remains at Gua Ladori and assess their significance within the prehistoric context of Sulawesi, with a particular focus on North Konawe. The research methodology involves three stages: data collection, data processing and analysis, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal a diverse array of artifacts, including bone fragments, ceramics (earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain), stone tools, shell remains, and rock art. Analysis indicates that the earthenware and porcelain ceramics are likely from the 14th to 17th centuries AD
