Indonesian Journal of Religious (e-ISSN: 2827-8984) has the perspectives of humanities and social sciences. This journal also has programs aimed at bridging the gap between the textual and contextual approaches to Religious Studies and solving the dichotomy between ‘orthodox’ and ‘heterodox’ Religious. The two were linked: the sacred texts showed that religion was, as well as a set of religious tenets, a way of approaching the practical political, economic, social, and cultural challenges of life. So, this journal invites the intersection of several disciplines and scholars. In other words, its contributors borrowed from a range of disciplines, including the humanities and social sciences. IJR, published twice a year (April and October), always places religion in the central focus of academic inquiry and invites any discussions as the aim and scopes.

Abstract

This research article delves into the theological and pastoral implications of 1 Peter 1:1-8, concentrating on its core themes of identity, hope, and faith in the context of suffering. The passage speaks to early Christian communities dispersed throughout various regions, underscoring their status as God's chosen people and their inheritance of a living hope made possible through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The study examines the relationship between divine sovereignty and human agency, illustrating how God's safeguarding presence and the faith of believers coexist amid challenges. It also analyzes the text's focus on the purifying aspect of suffering, showing how trials can validate and fortify faith, similar to the refinement of gold. Additionally, the article explores the eschatological aspect of believers’ joy, which surpasses current difficulties and is anchored in the promise of salvation. By placing the passage within its historical and cultural framework, this research highlights its lasting significance for modern Christian communities facing adversity, providing a perspective on suffering as a transformative experience that enhances faith and hope in God's assurances. This article contributes to the scholarly understanding of 1 Peter 1:1-8 by offering a comprehensive theological, historical, and syntactical analysis that highlights how hope, faith, and identity are shaped through suffering within both ancient and contemporary Christian contexts.

Abstract

This study explores the role of the church in addressing social justice in Indonesia through the application of ecclesiastical law. Despite Indonesia being based on Pancasila, social inequality remains a significant challenge. The aim of this research is to explore how ecclesiastical law can contribute to resolving social justice issues by incorporating Abraham Kuyper's thoughts on the sovereignty of God. The research employs a qualitative method, including a literature review and theological analysis. It analyzes Kuyper's works, such as Lectures on Calvinism and Our Program, which emphasize that God's sovereignty encompasses all aspects of social, political, and economic life. Additionally, in-depth interviews with church leaders provide practical perspectives on the challenges and opportunities in fulfilling the church's social role. The findings show that the church can make a meaningful contribution to addressing social injustice by integrating Kuyper's views and applying ecclesiastical law. The church holds moral authority in advocating for social justice, even while operating within a secular legal system. This study contributes by demonstrating that the church can have a real impact through fair public policy advocacy and social services based on theological values, with a collaborative strategy focused on concrete actions to create a more just social order.

Abstract

The mission of evangelism in Indonesia is often hampered when non-Christians identify it as a Christianization movement. For Muslims in particular, Christianization is considered apostasy. This issue has long been fanned as a trigger for the emergence of radical Islamic movements. Many sources record that Christianization is launched not only to atheists or anists, but also to those who have adopted official religions. Indeed, the pure and sincere mission of evangelism has been tainted with a new form of what non-Christians call Christianization? What is the difference between evangelism and Christianization? Is it true that Christianization has become a coordinated, systemized and massive movement as is widely discussed by many media, or is it just a one-sided accusation? This paper will examine the empirical facts and re-question the truth. The research method used is qualitative descriptive, through library research and in-depth observation of facts in the field. The result of this article is a call for a more inclusive and subtle approach to evangelism in Indonesia, distinguishing it from Christianization, to foster interfaith harmony and avoid colonial perceptions. This article contributes by distinguishing between evangelism and Christianization, highlighting the importance of adopting a subtle, inclusive approach to evangelism in Indonesia to avoid the perception of it as a form of Christianization and to foster interfaith harmony.

Abstract

Sacrifice in general in the sense of some people is giving something as a form of loyalty or self-devotion in various forms, such as property, even life will be given. If we look at and have heard history, several civilizations in the past had immoral and inhumane religious practices. The practice of child sacrifice has been a subject of considerable interest and debate within biblical and ancient history studies. This study examines the narrative of the Binding of Isaac (Genesis 22) within the broader religious and cultural context of child sacrifice in the Ancient Near East (ANE). While the Akedah shares thematic similarities with ANE sacrificial traditions—particularly the motif of offering a firstborn to a deity—it simultaneously presents a profound theological and ethical departure from those practices. Drawing on textual, archaeological, and comparative literary evidence from Mesopotamian, Canaanite, and Phoenician sources, this paper explores the ideological function of child sacrifice in ANE societies as an expression of extreme piety, covenantal obligation, and ritual appeasement. In contrast, the Genesis account frames the near sacrifice not as an act of ritual devotion, but as a divine test of Abraham’s faith and trust. Significantly, the intervention of YHWH at the climax of the story—commanding Abraham not to harm Isaac and providing a ram as a substitute—functions as a narrative critique of human sacrifice and a theological reorientation. Rather than affirming the cultural norm of child sacrifice, the Akedah undermines its legitimacy and introduces a new paradigm: one that emphasizes divine provision, the sanctity of life, and ethical boundaries in worship. This paper argues that the story’s literary form and theological message must be understood both in dialogue with and in opposition to its ANE context. Through this comparative lens, the Binding of Isaac emerges not merely as a story of obedience, but as a transformative moment in the history of ancient religion—marking a decisive shift toward a moral and monotheistic understanding of divine-human relationships.

Abstract

Liberation theology emerged in the late 20th century as a response to the widespread social injustice in Latin American countries. It emphasizes the liberation of individuals from social, political, and economic oppression, providing a theological framework that connects faith with social justice. Influenced by key figures like Gustavo Gutiérrez, liberation theology critiques traditional theological approaches that often overlook the harsh realities faced by marginalized communities. This article aims to explore the contributions of liberation theology to religious education, particularly its potential to transform educational practices by focusing on social justice, equality, and empowerment. It seeks to analyze how liberation theology can offer new perspectives in teaching religious studies in contemporary societies, especially in a postmodern context. The study adopts a qualitative research approach with literature analysis, examining theological texts, key writings from liberation theologians, and contemporary critiques of religious education. The research analyzes how liberation theology intersects with postmodernism, emphasizing pluralism, deconstruction, and the rejection of absolute truths. The findings suggest that liberation theology provides a compelling framework for rethinking religious education. By integrating social justice principles and encouraging critical engagement with oppressive systems, it offers a path for creating more inclusive and socially engaged religious education curricula. The study highlights the importance of teaching religion as a tool for societal transformation rather than mere doctrinal knowledge. This article contributes to the ongoing discourse in religious education by highlighting how liberation theology can provide actionable strategies for addressing social injustices within educational contexts. It offers a new paradigm for religious education that is both critically aware of societal issues and committed to justice and equality.

Abstract

This article discusses the relationship between science and spirituality, aiming to explore whether they can serve as a bridge in the search for truth or instead act as a barrier. The background of this study focuses on the historical tension that often arises between science, which prioritizes empirical evidence, and spirituality, which is more subjective and belief-based. The research adopts a qualitative approach using content analysis, reviewing various relevant literatures to find common ground between these two fields. The findings suggest that, despite the existing tension, science and spirituality have the potential to complement each other in understanding the universe, life, and the meaning of existence. The main contribution of this article is offering a more inclusive perspective on the interaction between science and spirituality, which could foster more constructive dialogue between the two.

Abstract

This research focuses on Søren Kierkegaard's thoughts on love for others, which emphasizes the importance of sacrifice and moral action in human relationships. Love, in Kierkegaard's perspective, is not just a feeling, but a moral commitment that requires sacrifice for the good of others. In Indonesia, although values such as gotong royong (mutual cooperation) and social solidarity already exist, significant challenges arise due to the shift towards individualism that is increasingly developing. The aim of this research is to analyze the principles of love for others according to Kierkegaard and how they can be applied in the social and cultural context of Indonesia. The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative approach, involving literature review and interviews with philosophy experts and community leaders. This research also uses a comparative approach to contrast Kierkegaard's thoughts with Indonesian cultural values such as gotong royong and social solidarity. The findings show that despite the challenges in implementing Kierkegaard's concept of love in Indonesia, these values of unconditional love are still highly relevant to strengthen social solidarity and create a more just society. The contribution of this research is to provide a new perspective on the application of Kierkegaard's moral love principles in Indonesia, which can be used to build a more caring and just society.
