Indonesian Journal of Religious (e-ISSN: 2827-8984) has the perspectives of humanities and social sciences. This journal also has programs aimed at bridging the gap between the textual and contextual approaches to Religious Studies and solving the dichotomy between ‘orthodox’ and ‘heterodox’ Religious. The two were linked: the sacred texts showed that religion was, as well as a set of religious tenets, a way of approaching the practical political, economic, social, and cultural challenges of life. So, this journal invites the intersection of several disciplines and scholars. In other words, its contributors borrowed from a range of disciplines, including the humanities and social sciences. IJR, published twice a year (April and October), always places religion in the central focus of academic inquiry and invites any discussions as the aim and scopes.

Abstract

Indonesia, with its vast cultural diversity, faces social challenges such as discrimination, often arising from differences in ethnicity, religion, and culture. While this diversity enriches social life, tensions between groups frequently occur, affecting social relations. Christian Religious Education (CRE) plays a crucial role in promoting tolerance and respect for differences, which is expected to help reduce discrimination in Indonesia's pluralistic society. This article aims to explore the contribution of CRE in addressing discrimination by instilling values of justice, love, and appreciation for diversity. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative approach, focusing on literature analysis and theoretical studies related to the role of CRE in a multicultural society. The data selected were carefully chosen to ensure relevance to the topic and were analyzed to form a theoretical foundation supporting the development of this article. The research findings indicate that CRE can serve as a means to foster understanding of pluralism and the importance of tolerance in community life. Through Christian teachings on love and justice, CRE encourages individuals to respect human rights and reject discriminatory attitudes. Moreover, CRE also plays a role in educating society to engage in interfaith and intercultural dialogue, contributing to the creation of an inclusive and just community. The contribution of this article is to provide insights into how Christian religious education can be used to build deep social awareness, appreciate differences, and advocate for justice in Indonesia's plural society. Through the teachings of Christian values, CRE can be an effective tool in creating more inclusive social consciousness, strengthening social cohesion, and combating discrimination.

Abstract

This article discusses the relationship between the Ceng Beng practice, a Chinese cultural tradition, and the Christian faith among the Chinese community. Ceng Beng, a festival to honor ancestors through tomb visits and ritual offerings, presents theological challenges for Chinese Christians, as Christianity emphasizes monotheism and worshiping only God. The Chinese Christian community faces a dilemma between preserving ancestral traditions and adhering to Christian teachings. This article identifies three main approaches to responding to Ceng Beng: rejection of the practice, modification of the rituals to align more closely with Christian teachings, and acceptance of the practice in a less ritualistic form. The role of the church and family significantly influences individuals' decisions on whether to follow or modify the Ceng Beng practice. The article also highlights the importance of a pastoral approach that is sensitive to cultural values, as well as the need for the church to provide relevant and contextual theological education. The findings show a diversity of views among Chinese Christians regarding this tradition and emphasize the importance of the church accommodating these differing perspectives with wisdom.

Abstract

This article discusses the importance of integrating pastoral counseling into theological education to build a more holistic and effective church counselor competence. Although some theological education institutions have included pastoral counseling in their curriculum, many still focus on teaching theory without addressing the practical skills needed for church ministry. This study reveals that combining psychological and theological principles in theological education can help prepare church leaders who are better equipped to handle the emotional and spiritual challenges of the congregation. The research method used is qualitative, based on in-depth interviews and documentation. With a more comprehensive and practice-based approach, theological education can equip future church counselors with the skills necessary to provide more effective and relevant support. Therefore, this study recommends that churches and theological educational institutions collaborate in designing a more innovative curriculum to enhance the quality of pastoral counseling services.

Abstract

The Garden of Eden is a garden that God placed in the Eden area. There is a view that says that the Garden of Eden is just a myth or symbol. But the writer of the book of Genesis has recorded emphatically that the Garden of Eden really did exist on Earth. The Garden of Eden was the place where the first humans were created by God, this place was an ideal and perfect place for the first humans, namely Adam and Eve, to continue their lives. This research is qualitative research, namely research in the nature of a literature review. The Garden of Eden is a unique phenomenon in various views of the Ancient Near Eastern era. In the view of the Jews, the Garden of Eden was the first Tabernacle on Earth, where God was present in the lives of Adam and Eve at that time. This study explores the theological and symbolic connections between the Garden of Eden and the Tabernacle (Mishkan) within Jewish thought, emphasizing how both spaces function as loci of divine presence and communion between God and humanity. Drawing upon biblical texts, rabbinic literature, and later Jewish commentaries, the paper argues that Eden serves as a primordial sanctuary—an archetype for sacred space that is later echoed in the construction and function of the Tabernacle. The parallels in language, structure, and ritual—such as the presence of cherubim, the centrality of divine glory (Shekhinah), and the role of priestly mediation—suggest a deliberate theological continuity. By framing the Tabernacle as a symbolic reentry into Eden, the paper highlights the enduring Jewish vision of holiness as a lived, spatial, and relational reality.

Abstract

This article explores the significance of Psalm 22, particularly the poignant cry, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" and its theological implications, both within the context of the psalm itself and its fulfillment in the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. By employing a theological-exegetical method, the study analyzes the psalm's literary structure and theological themes, particularly the expression of divine abandonment. The article then connects these themes to the Passion narratives in the New Testament, highlighting how Jesus' cry from the cross directly references and fulfills the prophetic words of Psalm 22. Furthermore, the paper incorporates insights from key theologians such as Bonhoeffer and Moltmann to explore the doctrine of a suffering God, emphasizing divine empathy in human suffering. The study extends to interfaith dialogue in Indonesia, examining how religious communities navigate social differences and contribute to fostering peace and tolerance through dialogue. By combining theological reflection with sociological analysis, the article underscores the importance of interfaith dialogue as a tool for promoting social cohesion and addressing religious intolerance. This paper contributes to both theological scholarship and interfaith studies by offering a comprehensive analysis of the intersection between suffering, redemption, and social harmony in the context of Psalm 22.

Abstract

The Torajan community faces complex challenges related to poverty, despite having strong cultural traditions and social solidarity. Factors such as limited infrastructure, high customary costs, and economic inequality exacerbate the socio-economic conditions in the region. This study seeks to analyze Paul Knitter’s thoughts, particularly the soteriocentric correlational dialogue approach, as a response to these poverty challenges. By employing a literature review method specifically textual and critical analyses of Knitter’s works this study examines key texts, such as One Earth Many Religions, along with statistical reports and literature on Torajan local traditions. The findings indicate that Knitter's approach is highly relevant in the context of Toraja. The religious diversity in the region can serve as a foundation for collaboration to address poverty through soteriocentric correlational dialogue, where dialogue is implemented through tangible actions focused on societal welfare and justice. This study aims to make a significant contribution to the development of interfaith dialogue and evaluate the relevance of Paul F. Knitter’s ideas in addressing the poverty challenges faced by the Torajan community.
