Abstract

Dandruff is a scalp condition characterized by an anomaly, often caused by the fungus of Candida albicans. The development of safe and effective anti-dandruff shampoo is imperative. Notably, traditional medicine employs pandan wangi and celery leaves, rich in polyphenols, flavonoids, saponins, tannins and alkaloids as potential anti-dandruff agents. The aims of this study was to formulate and evaluate the antifungal activity of a combination shampoo containing extracts form pandan wangi and celery leaves. Antifungal testing was carried out using the diffusion method using paper discs. Three formulations were prepared FI (without extract), FII (10% pandan leaf extract, 20% celery leaf), FIII (20% pandan leaf extract, 10% celery leaf). Antifungal test was evaluated using the paper disc diffusion method, with 2% ketoconazole shampoo as the positive control. Physical quality test demonstrated favorable attributes for pandan wangi and celery leaf extract shampoo, with FII and FIII exhibiting dark green colors whit distinct odors, while FI remained colorless and odorless. Furthermore, all formulations were in semi-solid dosage forms and met pH requirement for scalps (pH 6,) and produced satisfactory foam yields (6,8-8,9 cm). The antifungal activity test revealed FI as the negative control with a 7 mm and 2% ketoconazole shampoo with a 24 mm inhibition zone, while FII and FIII showed no inhibition zone. The combination of pandan wangi and celery leaf extract in shampoo preparation showed no synergic activity to inhibit the growth of Candida albicans fungus. Further investigations and clinical trials are warranted to validate its effectiveness and safety for practical application.

Abstract

Cholesterol is a fat or lipid from the sterol group produced by the body. The higher the cholesterol level in the blood, the greater the risk of atherosclerosis, which is the first step in triggering other cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, coronary heart disease, and even stroke and death. One of the synthetic drugs commonly used to treat high cholesterol is statins, especially atorvastatin. However, long-term use of atorvastatin can cause several side effects, including muscle pain, liver damage, type 2 diabetes, and digestive disorders. Because of the risk of these side effects, many people turn to herbal-based alternative treatments which are considered safer. Self-medication can be done to reduce high cholesterol levels. Self-medication is a community effort to obtain and use traditional medicine independently. One of the traditional medicines that is believed to lower cholesterol levels is soursop leaves. This research aims to look at the potential of soursop leaves as a medicine to lower cholesterol levels and provide a choice for people who want to reduce their cholesterol levels, especially for sufferers of hypercholesterolemia. This article is a literature review article using the literature review study method. A literature search was carried out using the Google Scholar database, namely articles or guidelines on the potential of soursop leaves as a medicine to lower cholesterol levels published in the last 10 years. The research results show that soursop leaves have a significant effect on reducing cholesterol levels. So soursop leaves can be considered a safe and effective herbal treatment for hypercholesterolemia.

Abstract

Bay leaf is one plant that has benefits as traditional medicine, acting as an antioxidant with flavonoid content. The processing is still very simple, which has an impact on the short shelf life of the herb. One alternative to prevent this is to formulat e bay leaf extract into effervescent granule preparations, which provide a more comfortable feeling with a large concentration of active substances. This study aims to determine the difference in the physical quality of effervescent granule preparations wit h variations of effervescent salts and to determine the concentration of acids and bases that produce effervescent granules of bay leaf extract with good physical quality. In 3 effervescent granule preparation formulas, the variation in acid and base concentrations (citric acid, tartric acid, and sodium bicarbonate) is F1 by 9.4%; 18.7%; 27%, F2 by 8.6%; 17.2%; 29%, and F3 by 7.9%; 15.8%; 31%. Physical quality evaluation of effervescent granule preparations includes organoleptis, flow velocity, rest angle, disperse time, pH, and moisture content. Quantitative data were analyzed with the One Way Anova test to determine the difference in physical quality of the three effervescent granule preparation formulas. Based on the results of physical quality tests, the three greenish-white granule formulas were obtained, the characteristic smell of bay leaf extract, and the granule form with a flow speed of 10 g / second, a stati onary angle in the range of 31-35 °, a dispersion time of < 5 minutes, a pH in the range of 5-6, and a moisture content of < 5 minutes. The results of One Way Anova testing found that the three formulas with variations of effervescent salts have different physical qualities, and acid-base concentrations that produce good physical qualities, namely F1 and F3

Abstract

Dry and chapped lips are one of the problems often faced by some people that will cause pain and discomfort. Lip balm is made from the main ingredient oil or fat that will provide moisture to the lips. The addition of color to lip balm preparations will add its own attractiveness, especially for women, because occasionally it can help improve facial aesthetics. Beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.) It is one of the plants that contains betacyanin pigment which has the potential as a natural dye and has very strong antioxidant activity. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a difference in the physical quality of lip balm preparations with variations in beetroot extract (Beta vulgaris L). This research is a laboratory study by formulating beetroot ethanol extract into lip balm preparations in 3 formulas with variations in extract concentration, namely formula I (6%), formula II (10%), and formula III (14%). Physical quality tests of the preparations observed are organoleptis, homogeneity, adhesion, and dispersion. Analysis of organoleptical data and homogeneity was carried out descriptively while the results of adhesion and dispersion tests were analyzed with inferential statistics using IBM SPSS statistics 26 at a 95% confidence level with the One-Way ANOVA test. The results of this study showed that there were differences in the physical quality of beetroot extract lip balm (Beta vulgaris L.) at a FI (6%) with a FII (10%) and FIII (14%) especially in the dosage color, adhesion, and spreadability.

Abstract

Flavonoids are polyphenolic compounds, so they have the chemical properties of phenolic compounds, which are slightly acidic, soluble in bases, and are polyhydroxy (hydroxy groups) and polar. Flavonoids are found in many plants such as butterfly pea. This study aims to determine the presence or absence of flavonoids in the ethanol extract of butterfly peas and the levels of flavonoids contained in the extract of butterfly peas (Clitoria ternatea L.). This research was conducted by extracting the butterfly pea flower by maceration with ethanol and phytochemical testing of flavonoids. Flavonoid content was determined by the Chang method using UV-visible spectrophotometry. The data obtained were analyzed using Lambert Beer's law. The results of this study indicate that the ethanol extract of butterfly pea flowers positively contains flavonoid compounds which cause a red color after phytochemical testing. Determination of the levels carried out obtained an average level of flavonoids of 0.28107%.
