Abstract

This study investigates the efficacy of Social Skill Training (SST) in enhancing the social skills of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) during kindergarten years. Children with ASD often struggle with social interactions, hindering their integration into preschool environments. Using a quantitative approach with a Single Subject Research (SSR) A-B-A design, this research focused on improving the "peer greeting" skill, specifically through waving. Results indicate significant improvement across study phases, with waving frequency increasing from 3-4 times in baseline-1 to 6-7 times during intervention, and further to 9-10 times in baseline-2. The findings underscore the effectiveness of SST in enhancing social skills among children with ASD, particularly in initiating greetings through waving. This research contributes valuable insights into evidence-based interventions for improving social interactions in children with ASD during their formative years.

Abstract

The research investigates parental involvement in enhancing the communication skills of autistic children. Utilizing a qualitative research method with a case study approach examines 10 parents of verbally and non-verbally communicative autistic children. The data collection encompasses interviews and documentation techniques with the data analysis comprising data reduction, display, and conclusion followed by verification. The research findings indicate that parental contributions to communication skills enhance the implementation of mediation as a complement to therapy and specialized communication programs recommended by therapists and educators. Interventions are done based on assessments conducted in collaboration with therapists and educators. Intervention modalities, media, and methodologies are diversified to match the child’s needs but the lack of programmed sequences and schedules still emerges. Additionally, parental involvement extends to engaging other family members in the intervention process

Abstract

This literature review aims to analyze the implementation of inclusive education policies from early childhood education to higher education in Indonesia. Articles were selected through a screening process from 2015-2022. The review was conducted on an online database found on Google Scholar. There were 9 articles reviewed based on the inclusion criteria. Based on the results of the literature review,   it was found that inclusive education is an innovative and strategic educational approach to expand access to education for all children with special needs at all levels of education. The inclusive education model has been supported by stakeholders, but in practice there are still various barriers that come from teachers, schools, parents, special education experts and the government. However, the evaluation of inclusive education revealed positive impacts such as increased public awareness and understanding of inclusive education, government efforts to increase the number of educators and improve their quality, and improved accessibility of public facilities for people with disabilities. Recommendations are also provided, especially regarding regulations governing the improvement of educators' competencies, socialization for subject teachers, community support and arrangements for funding the implementation of inclusive education in Indonesia.
