Abstract

The increasingly complex problem of plastic waste needs to be addressed with more creative educational strategies so that people become more aware of the importance of preserving the environment. This study aims to describe the level of environmental awareness among FKIP students at Syiah Kuala University as future 21st-century teachers, covering knowledge, attitudes, and behavior, and to measure the effectiveness of learning interventions in increasing students' environmental awareness. This research uses a quantitative descriptive research method with initial data collection. The instruments used included a questionnaire that had been validated by experts to ensure data validity and reliability, and the test results showed that the instrument was suitable for use in the study. The research results indicate that the overall level of environmental awareness among students is still in the moderate category. A total of 58.99% of students' knowledge falls into the very low category, and 46.07% of students' attitudes are also in the same category. Meanwhile, in terms of behavior, 48.88% of students actually showed a high category. This finding indicates an imbalance between the cognitive, affective, and conative aspects of students' environmental awareness. To measure the effectiveness of awareness-raising efforts, a post-test was also conducted after the learning intervention, which showed a significant improvement, with the average knowledge score of students reaching 79%, attitudes 85%, and behavior 89%. Therefore, a strategy is needed to improve the quality of education thru stronger integration into the environmental education curriculum

Abstract

This study is grounded in the fact that students learning outcomes in green chemistry are relatively low, which are attributed to conventional teaching methods that involve students only minimally. This study aims to investigate the effect of project-based learning implementation on enhancing students learning outcomes in the topic of green chemistry. A quasi-experimental design with a pretestposttest control group was employed. The participants were tenth-grade students at MAS Darul Ihsan, assigned to an experimental class using PjBL and a control class applying traditional instruction. Data were collected through cognitive achievement tests and student activity observation sheets. The data were analyzed using an independent t-test, yielding a significance level of 0.000. Findings revealed a significant difference in learning outcomes between the two groups, with the experimental class achieving an N-Gain score of 0.73 (high category), while the control class obtained 0.37 (medium category). These results demonstrate that the implementation of PjBL effectively enhances student engagement and conceptual mastery and awareness of the importance of green chemistry principles. Therefore, PjBL can be recommended as an effective instructional model to optimize learning outcomes and foster environmentally conscious attitudes among students

Abstract

Critical thinking skills (CTS) are important skills in the 21st century and are part of the school curriculum in Indonesia. However, validation of CTS instruments often relies only on content validation, while psychometric validation such as the Rasch model is rarely used. This study aims to validate a critical thinking test using the Rasch model to assess data suitability, measure the CTS of junior high school students in Surabaya, and identify item bias based on gender and school ranking. Data were obtained from 143 junior high school students with 10 multiple-choice questions. The results of the analysis showed that female students tend to have higher CTS than male students, while students from high-ranking schools showed a better distribution of abilities compared to moderate and low-ranking schools. Differential item functioning (DIF) analysis identified one item (EC2) that showed gender bias, and seven items (EC1, EC2, BS1, I1, I2, AC1, ST2) showed DIF based on school ranking. These findings suggest that although this test is generally fair for measuring CTS, there are inequities that need to be addressed to ensure the test is more inclusive and fair for all groups of students. The researcher hopes that this study contributes as a case of reference for future research in assessing CTS in junior high school students

Abstract

Misconceptions are erroneous understandings of concepts that tend to persist and are difficult to change, hindering learning processes and affecting student learning outcomes. In science education, misconceptions frequently occur in highly complex concepts, particularly in temperature, heat, and thermal expansion topics. This occurs because these concepts are abstract and everyday phenomena do not always align with scientific concepts. Therefore, identifying and analyzing student misconceptions becomes crucial. This study aims to analyze students' misconception profiles on temperature, heat, and thermal expansion topics using four tier test instruments. This research employed descriptive quantitative methods with a population of all grade VII advanced students from A-accredited junior high schools in West Padang Panjang District during the second semester of 2025/2026 academic year. The sampling technique used total sampling. The research sample consisted of grade VII advanced students from three schools: SMPN 1, SMPN 2, and SMPN 4 Padang Panjang. The research instrument comprised 19 four tier test questions with four levels: concept answers, answer confidence levels, reasoning for answer selection, and reasoning confidence levels. Results showed an average percentage of students experiencing misconceptions at 24% with low category. The misconception profile revealed two indicators in moderate category: explaining temperature concepts (31.5%) and determining factors affecting heat (32%), while nine other indicators were in low category ranging from 13%-29%. Identified misconception types included false positive, false negative, and pure misconceptions

Abstract

A good aquatic environment will ensure the availability of clean water, prevent the spread of disease, and support the balance of marine and freshwater ecosystems. Determination of the health status of aquatic environments can use various chemical, physical, and biological parameters. Microalgae are commonly used as bioindicators of changes in the environmental quality of aquatic ecosystems because they have high sensitivity to chemical and physical changes that enter the water. One of the areas with high ecological and economic potential in Indonesia is Kombal Bay, located on Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara. This study aims to determine the health level of the Kombal Bay freshwater ecosystem using microalgae as bioindicators. This study is a descriptive exploratory study with qualitative and quantitative approaches. Microalgae determination uses the Algaebase online database guide, diversity analysis uses the Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H) and the evenness index (E). The results showed that there were 23 types of microalgae, the majority of which were members of Bacillariophyta, the diversity of the microalgae community was classified as moderate (H=1.37) with an uneven distribution of species (E=0.43). The combination of these various parameters indicates that the waters of Kombal Bay are lightly to moderately polluted and are starting to show ecological pressure
