Abstract

This research aims to analyze gender relations and the stereotype of women as housewives in the Soklin Liquid 2024 advertisement. This research uses Roland Barthes' semiotic method to explore the representation of women through denotation, connotation, and myth. The theoretical framework of this research is based on the concepts of gender relations, stereotypes, and advertising to understand how social norms shape perceptions of women's roles. The research results show that this advertisement reinforces the traditional stereotype of women as housewives responsible for domestic tasks, such as doing laundry. Women are depicted wearing neat clothing, staying indoors, while men and children are shown enjoying leisure time outside the house. This representation maintains the view that women's primary role is limited to household tasks, reflecting existing cultural norms.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the framing of media coverage by Tempo.co regarding the controversy surrounding the development of Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) 2, which has been associated with the status of a National Strategic Project (Proyek Strategis Nasional or PSN). The research adopts a qualitative approach using Robert N. Entman’s framing analysis model, which includes four key elements: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgments, and treatment recommendations. The study focuses on four news articles published by Tempo.co on January 5, 8, 13, and 18, 2025. The findings reveal that although the reports highlight significant issues such as social inequality, environmental degradation, and spatial planning conflicts, Tempo.co tends to adopt a cautious stance in criticizing the government. The narratives primarily emphasize statements from political elites and government officials, often avoiding direct confrontation. The statement by the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs clarifying that PIK 2 is not a PSN further illustrates the lack of transparency in public information. These findings indicate that the media has not fully exercised its social control function. Therefore, it is crucial for the press to be more courageous in voicing social justice, especially when public aspirations are suppressed through legal mechanisms.

Abstract

This study examines the digital literacy of students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Bengkulu across three dimensions of individual competence: use skills, critical understanding, and communicative abilities. A mixed methods approach with a convergent parallel design was employed, integrating quantitative data from 74 respondents collected via a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics and independent sample T-tests, along with qualitative data from in-depth interviews with 10 informants analyzed thematically. The findings indicate that students’ digital literacy ranges from sufficient to high, with differences across study programs. Informatics students excel in use skills, whereas Communication students demonstrate stronger critical understanding and communicative abilities. The T-tests revealed significant differences across all three dimensions: use skills (t = 2.150; p = 0.034), critical understanding (t = 1.993; p = 0.049), and communicative abilities (t = 1.993; p = 0.040). Qualitative findings reinforce the quantitative results, highlighting differences in patterns of media usage, comprehension, and practices according to academic orientation. The study underscores that digital literacy is shaped by a combination of individual competence and educational context. These findings are crucial for designing digital literacy programs tailored to the specific needs of different academic disciplines, enabling students to become critical, responsible, and adaptive digital users in the information age.

Abstract

The development of digital technology and social media has changed the way Generation Y and Z interact, work, and interpret their daily lives. Amidst the rapid flow of information, a phenomenon known as technostress has emerged, which is psychological pressure arising from the intensity and complexity of technology use. This study aims to analyze the effect of technostress arising from social media use on the productivity levels of Generation Y and Z in Indonesia. The method used is quantitative with 400 respondents analyzed using Partial Least Square (PLS) through SmartPLS 4.0. The research instrument was compiled based on technostress and productivity indicators with a 1–4 Likert scale. The results show that digital pressure is not always negative. On the contrary, in certain contexts, technostress can encourage individuals to adapt more quickly, filter information more selectively, and form effective work strategies. These findings reinforce the concept of techno-eustress, which is a form of positive stress that can trigger increased focus, motivation, and work performance. Thus, social media is not merely a source of distraction but can also be a trigger for productivity when managed wisely. This study contributes theoretically to expanding the understanding of social media-based technostress and emphasizes the importance of digital literacy and awareness of digital health. With the ability to manage digital pressure, individuals can transform stress into productive energy that supports performance in the modern era.

Abstract

This study analyzes viewer satisfaction with the information services and local programs of TVRI South Sulawesi. Using a descriptive quantitative survey, data were collected through an online questionnaire completed by 260 viewers, mostly from younger age groups. The results show a high level of satisfaction with program content, presentation, and several technical aspects of the broadcast. Viewers particularly appreciate the themes and messages of local programs, the attractive presentation, competent hosts, and suitable broadcast schedules. However, concerns remain regarding technical quality, especially signal stability and studio lighting, which require improvement. The study recommends strengthening digital broadcast infrastructure and continuing to innovate program formats and presentation styles to better meet audience expectations. These findings are expected to support TVRI South Sulawesi in improving service and programming quality and to provide a reference for other local television stations.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the political branding strategy of Sherly Tjoanda through her TikTok account @sherlytjoanda during the first 100 days of her term as Governor of North Maluku for the 2025–2030 period. The study applies the concept of personal political branding with seven key indicators: competence & energy, sincerity & agreeableness, excitement, openness, sophistication, ruggedness, and conscientiousness. The research method used is qualitative content analysis with a descriptive approach. Data was obtained from 194 TikTok videos, which were then categorized according to the relevant indicators. The findings reveal that the most dominant indicators are sincerity & agreeableness (161 times), conscientiousness (149 times), and competence & energy (123 times). Other indicators—sophistication (122 times), openness (63 times), excitement (48 times), and ruggedness (45 times)—serve as supporting elements. These results indicate that Sherly Tjoanda constructs a political image of integrity, relatability, and performance orientation by utilizing TikTok as a strategic medium, representing women’s political leadership in the digital era.

Abstract

This research analyzes the role of local media in a disaster context by examining the construction of reality in flood reporting in Ponorogo by the Local Media "Kanal Ponorogo". With the dominance of hydrometeorological disasters such as floods (72% of total disaster events from 2023-2024), Ponorogo Regency was selected as the case study. Methodologically, this research is a qualitative study using the framing analysis method based on Robert N. Entman's model to dissect how Kanal Ponorogo frames the flood issue through four elements: problem definition, causal diagnosis, moral judgment, and treatment recommendation. The results of the analysis of three main news stories show that Kanal Ponorogo's reporting is dominated by a reactive and episodic pattern, focusing on disaster impacts and emergency response. The frames used vary, ranging from human interest and victim frames (highlighting the suffering of residents) to action and solution frames (emphasizing the heroic performance of the military/police). However, consistently, the reporting avoids structural analysis by simplifying flood causality solely as a natural phenomenon, without delving into root causes such as environmental governance or mitigation failures. The research concludes that while serving as a channel for citizen aspirations and providing legitimacy for authorities, the framing used has the potential to obscure the root of the problem and reduce demands for accountability. Consequently, there is a gap between the strategic potential of local media as a partner in disaster resilience and its reporting practices, which are not yet proactive.

Abstract

The phenomenon of using personal data as a digital commodity raises serious issues related to privacy, ethics, and global democracy. The documentary film The Great Hack (2019) portrays the Cambridge Analytica scandal, which revealed how the data of millions of Facebook users were collected and exploited for political purposes. This study aims to analyze the representation of digital cultural commodification in the film by employing the theories of Cultural Commodification and Surveillance Capitalism. The research method applied is a qualitative case study through Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis, which encompasses the dimensions of text, discourse practice, and social practice. The findings indicate that personal data are treated as strategic economic assets, processed into psychographic profiles, and utilized to influence voter behavior in a segmented manner. Digital commodification differs from traditional forms as it operates algorithmically, on a massive scale, and often without the awareness of users. The study concludes that such practices not only violate individual privacy but also threaten the legitimacy of democracy and highlight the dominance of technology corporations in global communication.

Abstract

Art is an important part of culture, serving as a medium for expressing the soul, experience, and identity of a community. Reog, a tradition traditionally performed by men and considered sacred, is deeply embedded in social norms, making it difficult to change. The emergence of women's groups such as Sardulo Nareswari has sparked resistance because it is considered a violation of tradition. This research, using qualitative ethnographic studies, allows researchers to conduct in-depth, participatory observations. The purpose of this study is to analyze how Sardulo Nareswari women negotiate identity within a masculine cultural space. The results of Sardulo Nareswari's research use negotiation strategies of compromising, accommodating, competing (maintaining identity), and collaborating, without using avoiding strategies (avoiding conflict). This strategy demonstrates social intelligence and flexibility in facing complex cultural challenges, strengthening their legitimacy and existence as female Reog artists in Ponorogo, while simultaneously preserving culture despite being in a cultural space dominated by masculinity. This research provides a new contribution to the study of gender communication studies by expanding Ting-Toomey's identity negotiation framework within a traditional cultural context.
