Abstract

The title of an audiovisual work serves not only as an identity but also as an initial representation of the theme, conflict, and message being conveyed. This study aims to analyze the meaning of the title "The Good Bad Mother" (2023) using Roland Barthes's semiotic theory, which distinguishes between denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings. This study employed a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach. Data were collected from key scenes in the drama and analyzed based on the structure of signs: signifier and signified. The results show that the meanings of "good" and "bad" in the context of motherhood are relative and dependent on cultural constructions. This title represents the complexity of a mother's role, which is not only gentle and loving, but also firm and even painful for the sake of her child. Through Barthes's semiotic analysis, this study reveals that the title "The Good Bad Mother" is a cultural sign that debunks the myth of ideal motherhood and challenges the normative interpretation of the mother's role in society.

Abstract

The government is endeavoring to establish policies that legitimize the participation of TNI (Indonesian National Armed Forces) and Police personnel in practical politics. This endeavor is undertaken without adherence to democratic principles, and the legislative process is also non-transparent. Malaka Podcast, a discussion platform and learning medium for youth, produced an episode titled “Don’t Let Indonesia Regress to the Dark Ages.” The podcast featured legal experts to discuss the re-emergence of the ABRI dwifungsi (dual function) discourse, an attempted revival under the current regime. This research aims to deconstruct the dialogue within this podcast using Teun A. van Dijk's critical discourse analysis (CDA). The dialogue content was thematically coded, derived from the podcast transcript and the researcher's thorough engagement with the entire audio. Subsequently, these thematic codes were analyzed within the dimensions of context, social cognition, and ideology, in accordance with Van Dijk's CDA framework. The findings conclude that the podcast dialogue is imbued with pro-democracy messages, the importance of civil society solidarity, and critiques of the law-making process.

Abstract

The tragedy of a Brazilian tourist’s fall on Mount Rinjani in June 2025 triggered discursive conflict in the comment section of Instagram account @sar_nasional, shifting the space from sympathy to a site of narrative clashes between Indonesian and Brazilian netizens. This qualitative case study examines how the two groups constructed competing narratives by analyzing 56 relevant comments using Framing Theory and Symbolic Interactionism. Brazilian netizens framed the incident as “systemic negligence” by highlighting delayed response and infrastructural weaknesses, while Indonesian netizens countered with a frame of “volunteer heroism in extreme terrain,” emphasizing geographical challenges and the dedication of SAR teams. The interactions did not evolve into dialogue but instead functioned as rituals of identity affirmation that deepened polarization. This study demonstrates how a humanitarian tragedy can transform into a cross-national narrative conflict at the grassroots level. Practically, the findings underscore the need for rescue institutions to apply crisis management strategies grounded in cross-language communication to prevent escalation, and to develop digital “micro-diplomacy” practices through rapid clarification, contextual explanations, and empathic responses to ease tensions in digital platform comment spaces.
