Abstract

The title of an audiovisual work serves not only as an identity but also as an initial representation of the theme, conflict, and message being conveyed. This study aims to analyze the meaning of the title "The Good Bad Mother" (2023) using Roland Barthes's semiotic theory, which distinguishes between denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings. This study employed a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach. Data were collected from key scenes in the drama and analyzed based on the structure of signs: signifier and signified. The results show that the meanings of "good" and "bad" in the context of motherhood are relative and dependent on cultural constructions. This title represents the complexity of a mother's role, which is not only gentle and loving, but also firm and even painful for the sake of her child. Through Barthes's semiotic analysis, this study reveals that the title "The Good Bad Mother" is a cultural sign that debunks the myth of ideal motherhood and challenges the normative interpretation of the mother's role in society.

Abstract

The government is endeavoring to establish policies that legitimize the participation of TNI (Indonesian National Armed Forces) and Police personnel in practical politics. This endeavor is undertaken without adherence to democratic principles, and the legislative process is also non-transparent. Malaka Podcast, a discussion platform and learning medium for youth, produced an episode titled “Don’t Let Indonesia Regress to the Dark Ages.” The podcast featured legal experts to discuss the re-emergence of the ABRI dwifungsi (dual function) discourse, an attempted revival under the current regime. This research aims to deconstruct the dialogue within this podcast using Teun A. van Dijk's critical discourse analysis (CDA). The dialogue content was thematically coded, derived from the podcast transcript and the researcher's thorough engagement with the entire audio. Subsequently, these thematic codes were analyzed within the dimensions of context, social cognition, and ideology, in accordance with Van Dijk's CDA framework. The findings conclude that the podcast dialogue is imbued with pro-democracy messages, the importance of civil society solidarity, and critiques of the law-making process.

Abstract

The tragedy of a Brazilian tourist’s fall on Mount Rinjani in June 2025 triggered discursive conflict in the comment section of Instagram account @sar_nasional, shifting the space from sympathy to a site of narrative clashes between Indonesian and Brazilian netizens. This qualitative case study examines how the two groups constructed competing narratives by analyzing 56 relevant comments using Framing Theory and Symbolic Interactionism. Brazilian netizens framed the incident as “systemic negligence” by highlighting delayed response and infrastructural weaknesses, while Indonesian netizens countered with a frame of “volunteer heroism in extreme terrain,” emphasizing geographical challenges and the dedication of SAR teams. The interactions did not evolve into dialogue but instead functioned as rituals of identity affirmation that deepened polarization. This study demonstrates how a humanitarian tragedy can transform into a cross-national narrative conflict at the grassroots level. Practically, the findings underscore the need for rescue institutions to apply crisis management strategies grounded in cross-language communication to prevent escalation, and to develop digital “micro-diplomacy” practices through rapid clarification, contextual explanations, and empathic responses to ease tensions in digital platform comment spaces.

Abstract

This study maps the trends and conceptual structure of crisis communication in digital media (2015–2025). Anchored in crisis/risk communication, platform/medium perspectives, and trust-building, we conduct a PRISMA-guided systematic literature review using Covidence. A Scopus query produced 76 records; after screening, 19 journal articles met the inclusion criteria (English, OA, article, final stage). We perform bibliometric mapping using VOSviewer and code outlet quartile, research method, organization type, social media platform, and yearly output. Four reproducible clusters emerge: (i) a public-health core (public health, epidemiology, procedures); (ii) social-media–trust–netnography; (iii) crisis management/risk communication with network analysis and fake news; and (iv) public relations/digital communication. Reflecting a significant pandemic-driven surge (84.2% of publications during 2021–2025), high-quality (Q1/Q2) research predominantly employs computational and netnographic methods on Twitter/X and multi-platform settings to address COVID-19 as a thematic anchor linking health communication, platform orchestration, and disinformation. The synthesized literature highlights orchestration-on-platform, trust-by-design, and evidence-based counter-misinformation as critical pillars emphasized for navigating digital crises; future research should extend to non-health crises, short-form/video platforms, and causal/longitudinal designs.

Abstract

This study aims to explore publication in science communication in collaboration with journalism. Using a Bibliometric-Systematic Literature Review (B-SLR) with the PRISMA protocol, bibliometric data were collected from the Scopus database and analyzed using Bibliometrix and VOSviewer tools to visualize citation networks, co-authorship, and thematic clusters. The analysis covered 85 peer-reviewed articles published between 2007 until 2025. Results reveal a steady rise in publication volume, with a significant surge between 2020 and 2023, coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic and the heightened need for credible, evidence-based science journalism. Major contributors are concentrated in the Global North, particularly the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom, while Asia’s participation especially Japan, China, and India are growing. Southeast Asian countries, including Indonesia, remain underrepresented. Thematically, five main clusters emerge: pandemic communication, methodological and public trust studies, science journalism training, media perception, and storytelling approaches. The main finding of this study is that science communication is undergoing a paradigm shift towards a Post-Normal Science model, but this transformation remains dominated by the Global North and has not been balanced by an inclusive epistemic distribution, especially in Southeast Asia. Overall, science communication has evolved into an increasingly inclusive and multidisciplinary international research field. Nonetheless, this study is limited by its reliance on indexed publications, which may introduce geographical and linguistic bias, especially the underrepresentation of non-English publications.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the quality of population administration services for vulnerable groups, which remains a challenge in realizing inclusive governance. The elderly and individuals with special needs often face access barriers, including mobility, information access, and service access. Proactive, inclusive service innovation is crucial to ensuring the equal fulfillment of administrative rights. This study aims to measure the level of satisfaction of the elderly and individuals with special needs with the implementation of the "Si nDuk KEREN" innovation program in Pacitan Regency and to identify service elements with the highest and lowest scores as a basis for service improvement. The study used a simple mixed-methods approach, combining a quantitative component (measuring nine service elements in accordance with national regulations) and a qualitative component (in-depth field findings to explain the factors underlying the scores). The study distributed the Community Satisfaction Index to 50 respondents. The results show that the elements of requirements and service products received the highest satisfaction scores, indicating procedural clarity and certainty of service outcomes. In contrast, elements of service time, staff competence, and facilities and infrastructure received relatively lower scores, primarily due to resource limitations, geographical challenges, and the need to adjust services for the elderly and individuals with special needs. Despite logistical challenges in data collection and field service delivery, the program significantly increased access to population administration services through home visits and free collective services. These findings confirm that the "Si nDuk KEREN" innovation contributes to strengthening inclusive governance, and that improvements in time efficiency, staff capacity building, and the provision of more vulnerable-friendly facilities are needed.

Abstract

The construction of women in popular media, such as music videos, often reproduces patriarchal values despite being framed within seemingly progressive narratives of empowerment. The positioning media as a space of ideological contestation shaped by power relations. This study examines how the visual text and lyrics of Ariana Grande’s Potitions interact with discursive practices and their socio-cultural context. Unlike previous studies focusing on women as passive objects, this study uncover the paradox of sumbolic empowerment, where women occupy strategic positions in the public sphere yet remain constrained within patriarchal systems. Using a qualitatative approach, the analysis applies Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework of text, discursive practice, combined with a liberal feminist perspective. Analysis was conducted across all scenes, examining camera framing, costume, visual blocking, and lyrical diction. The findings reveal that women’s roles are constructed through a multitasking form of empowerment, with women occupying strategic public positions while remaining embedded within patriarchal oppression. This study reinforces the argument that media is not a neutral space, but an arena of meaning production shaped by power relations and market interest
Strategi Komunikasi Krisis Zulkifli Hasan Menyikapi Isu Deforestasi dan Banjir Sumatra

Abstract

This study analyzes Zulkifli Hasan’s crisis communication strategies in response to public attribution of responsibility for the 2025 Sumatra flood disasters, which were linked to his past policies. Utilizing the Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT) framework, this research identifies that although the crisis is categorized as a preventable crisis, which theoretically necessitates a full apology, the subject instead implemented a combination of self-defense strategies. The research findings reveal three primary tactics: (1) Denial through the “attack the accuser" tactic to discredit the Harrison Ford interview video as a biased and modified film product; (2) Diminish using a "democratic surplus" narrative to shift ministerial responsibility to the structural failures of regional autonomy during the Reformation era; and (3) Bolstering via "ingratiation" by associating himself with the legitimacy of President Prabowo Subianto’s administration and employing theological emphasis to assert personal integrity. The novelty of this research lies in its analytical focus on managing reputational crises triggered by the re-contextualization of past digital footprints within a long-form podcast narrative format, a dimension that addresses a gap in crisis communication studies previously dominated by short-form social media platforms. This study suggests that future research utilize big data-based sentiment analysis methods to quantitatively measure the effectiveness of such rhetoric in shifting public perception.

Abstract

This study addresses the fragmentation of prior research on echo chambers, social media, and political campaigns by providing a systematic bibliometric mapping of their intellectual structure and evolving trends. Using a bibliometric approach, this study analyzes 238 documents indexed in the Scopus database published between 2014 and 2024. The findings demonstrate a marked acceleration in publication output, particularly after 2018, reflecting the increasing centrality of digital platforms in political communication research. Geographically, the United States dominates scholarly production, followed by the United Kingdom and several European countries, indicating a concentration of knowledge production in Western contexts with limited representation from the Global South. Disciplinary analysis reveals the dominance of Social Sciences and Computer Science, underscoring the hybridization of political communication and computational approaches. Furthermore, co-occurrence network analysis identifies three major thematic clusters: (1) individual-level processes, including selective exposure and affective polarization; (2) political actors, campaign strategies, and electoral dynamics; and (3) platform-based communication, discourse, and the diffusion of misinformation. These results suggest a significant shift from early descriptive studies toward more complex, integrative, and data-driven analyses of digital political environments. This study contributes by bridging fragmented strands of literature and offering a comprehensive global overview that highlights both the consolidation of dominant research agendas and the need for more geographically diverse and theoretically integrated future research.
