Abstract

This study explores the pragmatic politeness strategies employed in Franz Kafka’s novel "The Metamorphosis." Utilizing Brown and Levinson's (1987) politeness theory, the research analyzes how the characters navigate social interactions and maintain relationships in the context of Gregor Samsa’s transformation. The analysis reveals a dynamic use of bald on-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record strategies throughout the novel. Initially, the family’s interactions with Gregor are characterized by positive politeness strategies aimed at preserving normalcy. However, as Gregor's condition deteriorates, negative politeness and off-record strategies become more prominent, reflecting growing emotional and psychological distance. The father's frequent use of bald on-record strategies underscores the collapse of familial bonds and the rise of authority and control. These findings align with existing theories on politeness and impoliteness, demonstrating their applicability to literary analysis. The study also highlights Kafka’s depiction of alienation and existential angst through the characters' evolving politeness strategies. By examining the shifts in these strategies, the research provides insights into the social dynamics and psychological states within the Samsa family. This analysis contributes to the broader discourse on the intersection of language, society, and literature. The study underscores the importance of context in understanding politeness and its role in shaping character interactions and narrative themes.

Abstract

This study examines the morphological development in a 2-year-6-month-old child, K.A., using an interactionist framework. Observations were conducted over one month, revealing that limited exposure to varied linguistic inputs resulted in restricted vocabulary and incomplete sentence formation. Despite K.A.'s responsiveness to communication, the lack of parental engagement, particularly the father's absence, hindered his morphological development. The study found that increased maternal interaction slightly improved K.A.'s use of morphemes and sentence structures, underscoring the crucial role of parental involvement in language acquisition. These findings highlight the importance of enriched linguistic environments and suggest targeted interventions to support early morphological development.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of technology on children's vocabulary development, focusing on a case study of a three-year-old boy named Rizky. Despite Rizky's enthusiasm for learning through YouTube videos, his vocabulary was initially limited to words from the videos. His mother, Ibu Maya, creatively intervened by incorporating interactive play, real-world interactions, and reading sessions to expand his vocabulary. This approach demonstrates the necessity of balancing digital media with traditional learning methods and highlights the role of parental involvement. Theoretical frameworks such as Dual Coding Theory and Social Learning Theory provide insights into the effectiveness of this combined approach.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the impact of role-playing techniques with talk shows viewed from student personality (introvert-extrovert) for the senior high school students. One group pre-test and post-test design was used in this study by using speaking performance test to collect the data. The collected data then analyzed using t-test computation. The results of the data analysis showed that there are more introverted students than extroverted students. After the implementation of role play with talk show the students' speaking skills increased, with the scores of the introverted students were higher than those of the extrovert students. The t-test computation showed that there is significant effect of using role play with talk show to the students’ speaking ability viewed from their personality. It can be concluded that role play with talk show is suitable to teach speaking and it is suggested that the teacher should apply this technique and pay attention on identifying the students’ personality before teaching.

The research subject was a 4 year old child with speech delays. Data was collected through direct observation and interviews with parents as well. Data collection techniques include observing children's verbal behavior, assessing children's language abilities, and structured interviews to identify factors that influence language development and speech production. The results showed a significant relationship between language development and speech production in children with speech delays. The results of the analysis show that the higher the level of language development, the better the child's speech production. These findings demonstrate the importance of early intervention that focuses on improving language skills to support better speech production in children with speech delays. This research makes an important contribution to the development of more effective intervention programs in supporting language and speech development in children with speech delays.

Abstract

Mastering English vocabulary has its own challenges, especially in Indonesia where English is a foreign language. To help students master vocabulary, educators need to design interesting learning media. The researcher have used the "TikTok" application as an innovative medium to create a fun learning atmosphere. The research aims to determine students' vocabulary mastery before and after using the application and how significant its influence is on students at SMAN 6 Kota Kediri. The researcher used quantitative research with one group pre-test and post-test. The data results show that the t-score is higher than the t-table at the 5% significance level. The average pre-test score was 68.38, and the average post-test score was 81.67. The t-test calculation shows that there is -8.540 with a degree of freedom of 30 and significance smaller than 0.05. It can be concluded that t-test is higher than t-table Ha is accepted. So, the research results show that there is a significant influence on treatment, because the post-test score is higher than the pre-test score. These results show that the use of song lyrics in the "TikTok" application can help students solve learning problems, especially in mastering students' vocabulary.
