Abstract

This article explores cultural transformation and changes in social interaction within the indigenous community of Negeri Hatusua as a result of the introduction of digital technology, particularly smartphones and the internet. The main objective of this study is to uncover the shifts in values and norms within family structures as well as changes in social communication patterns in the digital era. The research adopts a qualitative approach through data collection techniques such as in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. Findings indicate that the presence of digital technology has shifted the community’s communication patterns from face-to-face interaction to indirect communication through digital devices. This shift affects relationships among family and community members, particularly in terms of information exchange and the practice of customary values. These findings affirm that digital technology plays a significant role in driving social and cultural change in indigenous societies, supporting previous studies and expanding the understanding of how local cultures adapt to global technological developments. The novelty of this research lies in its focus on indigenous communities, which have been relatively underrepresented in studies on digital technology. The study recommends strengthening digital literacy grounded in local wisdom to ensure that cultural transformations preserve indigenous identity and social cohesion. This research provides a valuable contribution to the development of the social sciences and humanities, particularly in understanding the impact of technology on traditional cultural values and social structures.

Abstract

This article aims to evaluate the utilization of Village Funds in the implementation of development programs in Poka Village, Teluk Ambon District, as part of the broader dynamics of decentralization and grassroots development in Eastern Indonesia. The study focuses on local participation and administrative efficiency in managing Village Funds. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, with data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Ten purposively selected informants represented various key stakeholders within the village. Data analysis followed Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the use of Village Funds in Poka Village has been effective, as evidenced by the high realization rate of development programs and adherence to plans formulated through participatory village planning forums. Community involvement throughout planning and implementation reflects a relatively strong participatory model, although challenges remain in terms of administrative capacity and consistent reporting. The novelty of this study lies in its emphasis on the relationship between fiscal decentralization structures and local participation dynamics in Eastern Indonesia—a region often overlooked in rural development literature. The study recommends strengthening village governance capacity and promoting more systematic community involvement to improve fund management effectiveness.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the reasons, actions, and meanings behind the use of augmented reality (AR)-based facial filters on Instagram by Communication Science students from the 2019 cohort at Pattimura University, Ambon. The research employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach to understand social actions and the meanings embedded within them. Informants were selected purposively, consisting of active Instagram users, identified based on the intensity of their platform usage. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis. The results of the study indicate that the primary motives for using facial filters include affective motives, the need for reputation, and the drive to maintain existence in the digital space. Each of these motives influences user behavior, ultimately reflecting how individuals interpret life satisfaction through their interactions with AR technology. This study contributes new insights to social and humanities research, particularly regarding the role of AR technology in shaping social experiences and the digital identities of young generations. The novelty of this research lies in uncovering the dynamics of AR filter usage as a form of self-expression and digital image creation. The study recommends further research to explore the impact of AR technology on social interaction patterns and the construction of digital identities, while also offering new perspectives for the development of communication theory in the digital era.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of social exchange in shaping sustainable partnerships between vegetable farmers and customers within the agribusiness system in Wayari Hamlet. Using a qualitative approach and in-depth interview methods, this study identifies two main dimensions in the social relations of vegetable agribusiness: the associative dimension, which reflects cooperation, and the dissociative dimension, which reflects the potential for conflict or tension within relationships. The findings show that social exchange, in the form of mutual commitment between farmers and customers, serves as the main foundation for creating mutually beneficial relationships. Farmers provide high-quality and consistent products, while customers offer financial support and long-term loyalty. This relationship not only enhances the economic stability of the farmers but also strengthens social bonds within the community. The novelty of this study lies in its revelation of how social exchange, rather than merely market mechanisms, can serve as an effective strategy to build sustainable agribusiness partnerships. These findings provide significant contributions to the development of social sciences and the humanities, particularly in understanding the dynamics of social relations within community-based local economies. This study recommends the integration of social exchange principles in the design of sustainable agribusiness models and in community-based agricultural development policies.

Abstract

This article aims to describe the representation of toxic masculinity in the Indonesian film Vengeance Is Mine, All Others Pay Cash through a semiotic analysis of the main character and selected scenes, employing John Fiske’s three-level coding model: the levels of reality, representation, and ideology. The analysis focuses on visual and narrative elements such as costume, behavior, cinematography, lighting, dialogue, and the actions of the protagonist, Ajo Kawir. The findings reveal that toxic masculinity is portrayed through 1980s-style modest clothing that symbolizes a duality of toughness and vulnerability, acts of violence as dominance over other men, and the refusal to fight women as a sign of patriarchal superiority. At the representation level, cinematographic techniques such as medium shots, close-ups, two-shots, and over-the-shoulder shots emphasize the emotional and violent dimensions of the character. Ideologically, the film articulates values of individualism, male dominance, and superiority, shaped by past trauma and patriarchal social structures. This study demonstrates that film serves not only as entertainment but also as a site for the production and reproduction of problematic gender ideologies. Its novelty lies in the application of Fiske’s semiotic approach to deconstruct toxic masculinity in contemporary Indonesian cinema.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the factors contributing to the electoral failure of female legislative candidates from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) in the 2019 local legislative election in Ambon. Using a qualitative case study approach, the research draws on in-depth interviews, party documents, and official election results. The findings reveal four interrelated factors. First, the party’s recruitment and cadre development processes were suboptimal, leading to inadequate political preparation for female candidates. Second, weak female political leadership within the party structure limited access to strategic resources and support. Third, the lack of prominent female figures diminished electoral appeal among voters. Fourth, the weak social base of the candidates contributed to low electability. The novelty of this study lies in its emphasis on internal party dynamics as a critical factor in enabling—or constraining—women’s success in local electoral politics. This research recommends systemic reforms in gender-responsive recruitment and capacity-building within political parties, as well as the strengthening of female leadership at the local level. These findings offer valuable insights for the development of social sciences and humanities, particularly in understanding power relations, political representation, and structural challenges facing women in Indonesian local politics.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of Village Fund Allocation (ADD) policies in addressing social disparities in Tawiri Village, Teluk Ambon District, as part of participatory development and economic empowerment efforts in Eastern Indonesia. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, with data collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation, utilizing both primary and secondary sources. The study focuses on four key aspects: (1) improving human capital, (2) ensuring equal access for all community members, (3) optimizing the management and utilization of local resources, and (4) promoting equitable development and job creation. The findings reveal that ADD policy in Tawiri has had a positive impact on human resource development and community access to development programs. Village funds are managed effectively, contributing to more equitable infrastructure distribution and the creation of new employment opportunities. The novelty of this study lies in its integrated analysis of the socio-economic impacts of ADD within a local context in Eastern Indonesia—an area often underrepresented in national academic discourse. The study recommends strengthening village institutional capacity and community participation as sustainable strategies for promoting social justice and advancing locally grounded social science knowledge.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the optimization of the implementation of the Decent Habitable House (Rumah Layak Huni or RLH) Assistance policy in Sulabesi Tengah District, Kepulauan Sula Regency, North Maluku. The research investigates how the policy, designed to improve housing conditions for low-income communities, aligns with the standards established in Law No. 1 of 2011 on Housing and Settlement Areas. Employing a structured descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis to assess policy execution, institutional coordination, and social impacts. The findings reveal that the RLH program has contributed positively to the welfare of low-income residents by improving access to livable housing. However, the program also faces several persistent challenges, such as rising construction costs due to increases in fuel prices and limited coordination and communication among central, regional, and village governments. The roles of the Head of the Department and the Head of the Housing and Settlement Area Division are pivotal in overseeing, supervising, and evaluating program implementation. Additionally, social tensions and issues in verifying eligible recipients highlight the need for clearer criteria and more inclusive communication. Periodic evaluations are crucial for addressing these concerns and enhancing program effectiveness. The novelty of this study lies in its detailed examination of housing policy implementation in a remote island regency context, contributing fresh insights into public policy execution in peripheral regions. The study recommends strengthening intergovernmental coordination, improving beneficiary targeting, and institutionalizing regular monitoring and evaluation to support the advancement of social and human sciences in the area of inclusive development policy.

Abstract

This study investigates the dynamics of community participation in human resource development within Barakkae Village, Lamuru District, Bone Regency, Eastern Indonesia. The primary objective is to explore the extent to which rural communities shift from being passive recipients of development initiatives to becoming active agents in shaping human capital outcomes. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving eight community members over the course of one month. The findings reveal a significant gap between theoretical models of participatory development and actual practice. Community involvement remains limited, particularly in decision-making processes, which are largely monopolized by village elites. This exclusion results in a lack of awareness, limited grassroots engagement, and diminished program ownership among the broader population. Additionally, the effectiveness and sustainability of human resource development programs are hindered by inadequate socialization strategies and insufficient funding. Evaluation mechanisms currently employed by village authorities also lack systematic integration of community feedback, further weakening the impact and relevance of ongoing initiatives. The novelty of this research lies in its contextual analysis of participatory barriers in a rural Indonesian setting, contributing to a deeper understanding of how local power structures and institutional limitations influence community agency. The study recommends the adoption of inclusive planning forums, the institutionalization of proposal repositories for bottom-up input, and stronger budget advocacy as pathways to reinforce local participation. These insights provide a valuable contribution to the broader discourse in social sciences and humanities by emphasizing the transformative potential of community-driven human development in peripheral regions.
