Abstract

This study aims to develop instructional media in the form of animated videos for the topic of Social Arithmetic in seventh-grade students at SMPN 4 Tarakan. The research was motivated by students’ low engagement and understanding in online learning during the pandemic, particularly regarding abstract contexts in Social Arithmetic. The method used is Research and Development (R&D), adopting the simplified Borg & Gall model up to the operational product revision stage. The video product was developed using Plotagon and Edpuzzle software and validated by experts in content, media, and instructional design. Validation results showed high feasibility percentages: 77.94% (content), 89.28% (media), and 92.50% (instructional design). Field testing on students also indicated the video was highly feasible, both in preliminary testing (90.97%) and operational field testing (89.97%). This study concludes that the developed animated video is highly appropriate as an alternative learning medium to improve the quality of mathematics instruction.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the mathematical elements embedded in the local traditions of the Maros Regency community, South Sulawesi, and analyze how these elements can be integrated into mathematics learning at the senior high school level. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, utilizing semi-structured interviews with teachers, students, and community figures, along with direct observations of local cultural phenomena. The findings reveal that cultural practices such as traditional weaving patterns, measurement systems in vernacular architecture, and traditional fishing navigation involve mathematical concepts such as symmetry, patterns, ratios, coordinate systems, and estimation. Interviews showed that both teachers and students responded positively to the ethnomathematics approach, although its implementation remains limited due to a lack of training and culturally relevant teaching materials. Meanwhile, community elders served as vital knowledge holders in bridging the understanding between culture and mathematical concepts. These findings emphasize the importance of integrating local culture into education to enhance relevance, conceptual understanding, and to foster students’ cultural identity and pride. The study recommends the development of a structured and sustainable contextual learning model based on local cultural heritage

Abstract

This study aims to examine the understanding of multiplication as repeated addition among fifth-grade elementary school students in solving multiplication problems. This research is a qualitative descriptive study, as the researcher seeks to describe how students solve problems related to the concept of multiplication operations. The subjects of this study were three fifth-grade students from State Elementary School 2 Abepura, Jayapura City, selected to represent different types or groups of problem-solving approaches related to multiplication operations. The subjects were chosen using purposive sampling, which involves selecting participants based on specific criteria or purposes. The research instruments consisted of a test sheet containing essay questions on multiplication and a flexible interview guide. Data were analyzed through three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that all three subjects did not understand the concept of multiplication as repeated addition; instead, they relied solely on memorizing multiplication facts.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of using Block dienes media on mathematics learning outcomes in grade I students of UPT SPF SD Inpres Pa'Baeng-Baeng 1 and to analyze learning outcomes based on students' learning styles. The method used is a quasi-experimental design with a sample of 50 students, consisting of an experimental class (n = 25) and a control class (n = 25), which were taken through a saturated sampling technique. The instruments used were essay tests and observation sheets, with data analysis through descriptive statistics, normality tests, homogeneity, hypothesis tests, and N-Gain tests. The results showed that the experimental class obtained a significant increase in learning outcomes, with a distribution of 52% in the high category and 36% very high, and an average N-Gain of 0.77 (high category). Based on learning styles, students with a visual learning style showed the highest average score increase compared to auditory and kinesthetic. As many as 86.67% of students showed activeness in learning, and 87% gave a positive response to the use of media. Hypothesis testing shows that H₀ is rejected and H₁ is accepted, which means that there is a significant influence of the use of Block dienes media on students' mathematics learning outcomes, especially for students with a visual learning style

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model on high school students' mathematical problem-solving abilities within the context of the Merdeka Curriculum implementation. The research employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a Non-Equivalent Control Group Design. The subjects were two eleventh-grade classes at SMA Negeri 3 Maros, assigned as the experimental and control groups, selected through purposive sampling. The instrument used was a written pre-test and post-test based on problem-solving indicators developed by George Polya. Data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics, including normality testing (Shapiro-Wilk), homogeneity of variance testing (Levene’s Test), independent sample t-test, paired sample t-test, and gain score calculation using Hake’s normalized gain formula. The results indicated a significant difference between the experimental and control groups, with a greater improvement in problem-solving ability observed in the experimental group. The PBL model was proven effective in fostering active engagement, critical thinking, and students’ analytical skills in solving mathematical problems. This research recommends the implementation of the PBL model as a relevant and adaptive instructional strategy to strengthen the Merdeka Curriculum, particularly in high school mathematics education

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the Guided Discovery Learning (GDL) learning model on improving students' Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) abilities. The method used is quantitative descriptive with a Quasi-experimental approach with a pretest-posttest experimental design type. The study involved 25 fifth grade students of SD Teladan Ambon as samples. The results showed that there was an effect of the GDL learning model on improving students' HOTS abilities. The increase in HOTS abilities increased in the high category with an N-gain value of 0.8 for 1 student, a medium category of 0.56 for 19 students, and a low category of 0.20 for 5 students. The increase was due to the effective use of the GDL model, where this model trains students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills related to flat shapes. Students can also analyze, evaluate, and create or create about flat shapes well.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the mathematical concepts embedded in the architectural structure of Brahu Temple in Mojokerto as a representation of local ethnomathematics. The research employs a qualitative approach with an ethnographic research design. Data collection techniques include literature review, field observation, and semi-structured interviews with site managers and local cultural figures. Data were analyzed using an interactive analysis model through stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results reveal that Brahu Temple contains various mathematical elements, including circles and cylinders in the stupa-shaped roof structure, squares and rectangular prisms in the temple body, as well as squares and cuboids in the temple base. Additionally, elements of symmetry, reflection, trapezoids, and triangles are also found in ornamental patterns and structural details. These findings indicate that traditional temple architecture can serve as a rich source of learning that integrates mathematical concepts and local cultural values. Therefore, such cultural heritage can be effectively utilized in contextual mathematics learning to enhance students’ numeracy literacy and cultural awareness

Abstract

Mathematics learning achievement among elementary school students is still relatively low, one of the reasons being the predominantly passive teaching approach that minimizes direct student involvement. This study aims to examine the impact of using the role playing method as an instructional approach aimed at achieving the mathematical competence of fourth grade students at SD 38 Janna-Jannaya. This study used a quantitative method through a one group pretest-posttest pre-experimental design. There were 16 students participating in this study, with multiple-choice questions used for the pretest and posttest. The data were analyzed using a paired t-test. The results of data processing showed an increase in the average score from 58.12 to 85.18, accompanied by an increase in learning completeness from 19% to 87.5%. Statistical tests showed a value (Sig.) of 0.000 (< 0.05), which ultimately led to the conclusion that the role-playing method had a significant impact on students' mathematics learning achievement. These findings indicate that the use of the role-playing method not only strengthens conceptual understanding and calculation skills but also fosters collaboration and communication skills among students during the learning process. This study opens up opportunities for further research on the application of role playing in other mathematics topics, different levels of education, or in combination with digital media to optimize student engagement in more interactive learning.

Abstract

Elementary school students need to have numeracy skills from an early age because these skills are an important foundation for solving various everyday problems that require logical thinking. The main objective of this study was to identify the relationship between the use of the traditional game Ma'gurecceng and the level of numeracy skills of students studying at SD Negeri 24 Pandang-Pandang. The use of the traditional game Ma'gurecceng is considered relevant as a learning medium that not only attracts students' interest but is also effective in strengthening their numeracy skills. The research was conducted using a quantitative method with a pre-experimental design in the form of a one-group pre-test-post-test. All 12 fifth-grade students at SD Negeri 24 Pandang-Pandang were selected as participants using a saturated sample method. Data were collected through written tests involving pre-tests and post-tests as well as student response questionnaires. Furthermore, data processing used the Wilcoxon test to compare pre-test and post-test scores. Statistical tests proved that after participating in learning activities with the Ma'gurecceng game, students' numeracy skills increased significantly. The average post-test score (81.58) was higher than the pre-test score (49.92), while the Wilcoxon test using SPSS gave a result (Sig.) of 0.002 (p < 0.05). The questionnaire data showed that 57.5% of respondents "strongly agreed," 42.5% "agreed," with no "disagree" or "strongly disagree" responses. The research findings confirm that the application of the traditional Ma'gurecceng game has a beneficial contribution to improving students' numeracy skills.
