Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms of affixation morphological errors in speech texts written by eighth-grade students of the Smart Bangsa Private Junior High School. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method. The study was conducted at the Smart Bangsa Private Junior High School in the 2024/2025 academic year. The study population was 80 eighth-grade students' speech texts. The sample consisted of 75 texts selected purposively. Data collection on the forms of affixation morphological errors in speech texts was carried out through documentation techniques based on observation guide sheets. The observation guidelines were compiled using objective and systematic steps. Data analysis of the forms of affixation morphological errors in speech texts used the distribution method supplemented by advanced techniques, including the lesap technique and the ganti technique. The results of the study, based on the analysis of 75 data points, showed that only 23 data points contained affixation errors. The types of errors that appeared included errors in the use of prefixes, errors in the use of suffixes, and errors in the use of confixes. The most dominant error was in the use of prefixes. Meanwhile, errors in the use of infixes were not found. This finding shows that students still experience difficulties in applying the rules of affixation morphology correctly, especially in formal writing contexts such as speech texts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of Mandarin language textbooks based on local culture in Indonesia as an effort to enhance the effectiveness of language teaching, as well as to formulate strategies for developing locally relevant textbooks that better meet students' needs. The research involved 120 students and 10 lecturers from the Mandarin Language Education Program in Indonesia, selected purposively. The instruments used in this study included surveys, interviews, and analysis of textbook documents, while data analysis was conducted using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing techniques based on the Miles and Huberman model, combined with simple descriptive quantitative analysis using SPSS. The results showed that the majority of the courses still used textbooks from China, such as Hanyu Jiaocheng and New Practical Chinese Reader, which, although systematic and in line with HSK standards, were considered less relevant to the socio-cultural context of Indonesian students. Some students had difficulty understanding texts depicting typical Chinese experiences, such as winter or traditional festivals, because these were not aligned with their everyday reality. Based on these findings, the strategies for developing local textbooks include: (1) analysis of students' needs, (2) integration of Indonesian culture into texts and exercises, (3) adjustment of material levels according to HSK standards, and (4) development of materials based on students' real-life experiences. This study concludes that developing culture-based local textbooks is crucial for enhancing the relevance and effectiveness of Mandarin language teaching in Indonesia and strengthening intercultural competence in the learning process.

Abstract

Integrating local culture into language learning is a practical approach to enhancing students' writing skills while promoting positive character values and cultural identity. This study focuses on the utilisation and strengthening of character through digital media in learning to write descriptive texts by highlighting the Malay maritime tradition of the jong boat race as contextual learning material for elementary school students. The purpose of this study is to develop descriptive text writing competencies that incorporate traditional Malay culture, modern technology, and the principles of meaningful learning, thereby fostering the connection between new knowledge and students' existing experiences and knowledge. The method employed is a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative methods. The quantitative approach uses a pre-experimental one-class pretest-posttest design to measure the improvement of writing skills before and after learning. The qualitative approach is carried out through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation to explore the experiences and responses of students and teachers. Digital media, including photos, short videos, and presentation applications, are used to help students observe, analyse, and describe the characteristics, materials, and processes of the Jong Boat Race. The results indicate that integrating cultural elements supported by digital visual sources and meaningful learning strategies can enhance students' descriptive vocabulary, sentence structure, emotional engagement, and depth of understanding. Furthermore, this approach encourages students to appreciate and preserve Malay maritime traditions, thereby enabling language learning to be integrated with cultural education. The study concluded that technology-enabled culture-based learning not only enriches students' language skills but also strengthens cultural awareness, making it a relevant and sustainable strategy for language education at the primary school level.

Abstract

Using the descriptive-correlational research design, this study examined the basic and post basic programs used to teach English in Burundi education system in order to find out the extent to which curriculum continuity is ensured across the 2 levels. Curriculum continuity was therefore assessed following Ornstein and Hunkins’ (1988) bidimensional model. The study further aimed to determine the relationship between curriculum continuity and post basic learners’ linguistic performance. In this way, two research instruments were used to collect data, mainly the document analysis and a likert scale questionnaire which was administered to a population sample of 32 learners of languages section from some selected schools in Ntahangwa communal Directorate of Education. Frequency distribution and Pearson’s r correlation were the statistical tools used to treat the data from the questionnaire while the data from document analysis were analyzed qualitatively. Findings reveal that the curriculum continuity across the two levels is ensured to a little extent. Additionally, the majority of the respondents view the continuity of curriculum at a very low level. Results further demonstrate that there is a very strong and positive relationship between curriculum continuity and learners’ linguistic performance. The study finally recommends the government of Burundi, through the Ministry of Education, to assure a smooth junction across different levels of education especially in terms of curriculum design and its implementation. Teachers are also recommended to be more creative by helping their learners be able to use the target language in and outside the classroom.
