Abstract

This study aims to examine the Sayur Matua funeral ceremony in the Batak Simalungun community as a medium for learning cultural values through Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic approach. The Sayur Matua ceremony is the highest form of respect given to individuals who die in a perfect state, namely after marrying off all their children and having grandchildren. This tradition is full of cultural symbols that function as a reflection of social, spiritual, and moral values. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, incorporating observation, interview, and documentation techniques within the community of Gajapokki Village, Simalungun Regency. The analysis was carried out using Peirce's semiotic theory, which distinguishes signs into icons, indices, and symbols. The results of the study identified 14 ritual stages involving 22 cultural symbols, 18 symbolic functions, and 18 symbolic meanings that reflect the value structure in Simalungun society. This article suggests the integration of Sayur Matua in a local wisdom-based learning curriculum to strengthen students' character education, especially in the aspects of responsibility, solidarity, and respect for ancestors. Thus, Sayur Matua not only functions as a sacred tradition but also as a contextual learning resource in shaping the identity and cultural awareness of the younger generation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze speech events in the Marunjuk tradition of the Toba Batak ethnic group and evaluate its potential as a source of learning cultural values ??in the context of multicultural education. The Marunjuk tradition is a form of traditional wedding ceremony that is full of meaning and social symbols, which is carried out by the Toba Batak community by involving various elements of oral communication. This study employs a qualitative approach, incorporating observation, documentation, and discourse analysis techniques, grounded in the theory of speech events developed by Dell Hymes (Speaking). The results of the study indicate that there are ten main stages in the Marunjuk tradition containing 57 speech event data, which include values ??such as respect, gratitude, togetherness, and social responsibility. The ten stages are: entering the party hall, delivering tudu-tudu sipanganon, delivering dengke simudur-udur, manjalo tumpak, mambagi jambar, marsiseanan, handing over panandaion, handing over tintin marangkup, mangulosi, tingkir tangga/paulak une (ulaon sad). From an educational perspective, this speech event serves as a concrete representation of cultural practices that can be utilized in local wisdom-based learning, particularly in strengthening the Pancasila student profile and developing character through language and cultural education. This research suggests integrating the Marunjuk custom as a contextual teaching resource in primary and secondary education curricula.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the types of illocutionary speech acts that emerge during the Tobus Huning ritual in the Batak Simalungun community. Tobus Huning is a sacred rite within the traditional wedding ceremony that holds symbolic meaning as a form of respect and gratitude to parents—particularly the mother—for their sacrifices in raising a child until marriage. This ritual functions not only as a customary formal procedure but also serves as a medium for emotional expression and the intergenerational transmission of cultural values. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through participatory observation of the ritual, audiovisual documentation, and in-depth interviews with traditional leaders, the families of the bride and groom, and local cultural stakeholders. Data analysis was carried out in three stages: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing through an inductive process. The findings indicate the presence of four dominant types of illocutionary acts: (1) Assertives, used to convey information and symbolic interpretations of each ritual stage; (2) Directives, functioning as instructions or requests to ensure the ceremony proceeds according to customary norms; (3) Expressives, articulating emotions such as gratitude, reverence, and heartfelt sentiments among family members; and (4) Commissives, which contain promises and moral commitments made by the bride and groom to their parents and extended families. These findings affirm that speech acts in the Tobus Huning ritual not only serve pragmatic functions of communicative intent but also act as an essential medium for preserving cultural identity, transmitting spiritual values, and reinforcing social solidarity within the Batak Simalungun community.

Abstract

Music has long been recognized as an effective medium for conveying human emotions and thoughts. Through song lyrics, music not only serves as a means of self-expression but also conveys profound meaning to those who listen to it. Recently, it has become increasingly common for singers to incorporate themes of self-healing into their music. One such artist is Feby Putri in her second album titled Hitam Putih. The lyrics of these songs present several phenomena of self-healing that are particularly intriguing when examined through the lens of Social Semiotics. Therefore, this study aims to (1) analyze the representation of self-healing in the lyrics of Feby Putri’s Hitam Putih album, and (2) identify the elements of social semiotics used in Feby Putri’s Hitam Putih album. The method used is descriptive qualitative analysis of the text. The techniques employed include documentation and literature review. Additionally, the data analysis technique selected uses a social semiotics approach, where the analysis stages include identifying symbols within the song lyrics. The analysis process began with a thorough reading of the song lyrics, followed by an analysis of the symbols based on the social semiotics framework, then an interpretation of meaning by linking the symbols to the social context. Finally, the symbols were integrated with social semiotics theory to conclude the representation of self-healing in the lyrics. The results of this album’s research reflect the emotional journey of individuals in facing suffering, self-reflection, and the process of finding inner peace. The lyrics in the Hitam Putih album contain representations of deep emotional experiences, reflecting interpersonal relationships between the singer and the listener through empathetic and personal word choices, and structured in a way that supports cohesive and coherent meaning connections.

Abstract

This study aims to discuss and describe two aspects: 1) conversational implicature and maxim violations in Trevor Noah's stand-up comedy, and 2) the lesson plan of conversational implicature and maxim violations in Trevor Noah's stand-up comedy using a constructivist approach through Google Forms. A descriptive, qualitative approach based on Grice's implicature theory was employed in this study to analyze 17 of Noah's utterances taken from a YouTube video entitled "Trevor Noah's Complete Remarks at the 2022 White House Correspondents' Dinner" (C-SPAN). The analysis revealed that one utterance can simultaneously violate several maxims. Specifically, 15 general implicatures and two specific implicatures were identified. This study also found that seven utterances violated the maxim of quality, four utterances violated the maxim of quantity, and five utterances violated the maxim of relevance. Six utterances violated the maxim of manner. Noah deliberately used this strategy to make his criticism and satire feel more subtle and less offensive. By breaking the rules, he can funnily convey hidden messages. However, the audience must understand the context of the speech to grasp the implied meaning, as the implied meaning is not always explicitly stated. The lecture plan at a university or college that uses a constructivist approach through Google Form media that involves four initial activities and ten core activity groups.
