Abstract

This study set out to find out how participants at The Bridge Education Manado felt about task-based learning (TBL) as a teaching strategy. The poll findings showed that participants generally agreed, highlighting their favorable opinions of TBL's efficiency in fostering student-centered and interesting language learning experiences that promotes a laid-back learning environment where learners' needs and interests are engaged. They acknowledged how language skills were included into TBL, highlighting how well it covered lesson retrieval and made it easier to remember earlier classes and resources as well as to improve language learning experiences and valued their significance and relevance to the actual world. These favorable opinions highlight the usefulness of TBL as a method of instruction that adheres to the fundamentals of communicative language learning and promotes successful language learning outcomes. It is clear from the survey results that TBL is well-liked by students at The Bridge Education Manado. These findings have effects on how the institution teaches languages. First and foremost, it is essential to keep supporting TBL as a pedagogical strategy and to offer ongoing assistance and chances for professional growth to teachers so they can use TBL techniques in the classroom. They would better comprehend TBL ideas, techniques, and material production as a result of this. Collaboration among educators can also encourage the sharing of creative TBL implementation ideas and best practices. Additionally, getting regular input from students can help to enhance TBL practices and better inform instructional design

Abstract

This class action research aims to apply the Numbered Head Together learning model to improve student learning outcomes in English subjects, especially for reading comprehension skills at the junior level, namely in class VII SMP Negeri 1 Merauke in the 2022/2023 academic year. This research is a Classroom Action Research (CAR), where Classroom Action Research (CAR) is research conducted in two stages of the cycle, where each cycle I and cycle II is carried out twice the learning process meeting. Each cycle consists of 4 stages, namely planning, implementation, observation and reflection. The subjects in this study were 32 seventh grade students. The success indicator of this study is if 75% of students can achieve the Minimum Completeness Criteria (KKM) value of 70. The results showed that the application of the Numbered Head Together (NHT) Learning Model in class VII SMP Negeri 1 Merauke showed an increase in the completeness of students' learning achievement in cycle I with an average of 61.65% increasing to 80.28% in cycle II. The percentage of learning completeness also increased from cycle I by 12.5% increasing to 100% in cycle II. In addition, There was also a very significant increase in each teacher and student activity based on the observation sheet. Where in cycle I the teacher's activities were at 89.28% and students at 66.07%, then increased in cycle II, where teacher activities became 96.42% and students at 91.07%.

Abstract

This correlation study aims to determine the following: 1) Students' attitudes toward learning English are significantly correlated with achievement. 2) Achievement and the quality of the English curriculum is strongly correlated with students' perceptions of it. 3) Achievement is significantly connected with opinions of the effectiveness of the English classroom and attitudes toward learning the language. 276 data made up the population of this study. One class out of the seven was chosen using a random cluster sampling method. In one session, thirty pupils were eligible for the analysis. A perception survey, an attitude survey, and an achievement test were among the tools used to obtain the data. Students' perceptions of the caliber of English instruction and attitudes toward learning English were gathered using the perception and attitude questionnaires. The perception and attitude questionnaire results were utilized to forecast English proficiency. The data were analyzed with the use of numerous correlations and SPSS12 in order to accomplish the three goals of the current study. The findings supported the notion that attitudes toward learning English and English achievement correlate with perceptions of English instruction's effectiveness. The result of the computation of multiple correlation coefficients (R) is .767 and the correlation coefficient (R2) is .588. Therefore, perception and attitude "accounted for" 58.8% of the achievement, leaving the remaining 41.2% unaffected by either.  According to the findings, recommendations are made to EFL teaching professionals and other academics who wish to look into the subject more in the future. These recommendations speak to the value of preserving perception and attitude in order to raise students' English achievement.

Abstract

In fact, writing is one of the language skills that is emphasized in learning English in Curriculum 2013. As one of the language skills, writing skills need to be improved because it is a productive and expressive language skill that is needed to fulfill daily communication needs. Seeing the crucial role of writing, this present study intent to examine the problem based learning as an alternative model for EFL students’ writing improvement. Classroom action research with two cycles was implemented to study this phenomena. Moreover, this study involved 18 students of class XI SMA YPPK YOS SUDARSO Merauke, in collecting the data, this study used observation sheet for both teacher and students’ activities, meanwhile to see students’ writing improvement, explanation text writing was applied in both cycles. As the result, Problem based learning could improve students’ writing, it could be seen in each cycles’ scores, where cycle I writing was 63.33% and improved in cycle II 81%. In cycle I, most of students did not pass the minimum completeness which was 75, meanwhile in cycle II most of students passed. The improvement based on the observation results in both cycles are also being the success category in this study, in cycle I both teacher and students obtained 67.85% (good category) and 57.14% (enough category), improved in cycle II which was 87.5 (excellent category) and 83.92% (excellent category).

Abstract

This present study offers a comprehensive analysis of the illocutionary acts in Taylor Swift's commencement speech delivered at New York University (NYU) in 2022. Illocutionary acts, a crucial component of speech acts theory, encompass the speaker's intended communicative functions, such as asserting, commanding, questioning, or expressing emotions. Taylor Swift's speech is examined in the context of illocutionary acts to uncover the underlying intentions and rhetorical strategies used in the address. Illocutionary acts refer to speech acts aimed at achieving specific communicative functions or goals. Pragmatics plays a helpful role in comprehending how speakers employ language to accomplish their communication objectives and how listeners interpret these utterances within the given context. It involves considering how speakers organize their intentions based on the individuals they are communicating with, the location, timing, and circumstances. This study analyzes the illocutionary acts performed by Taylor Swift in her Commencement speech at New York University (NYU). This study aims to identify and describe the meaning of the utterances used by Swift in her speech using qualitative methods. The results indicate that Swift utilized 94 utterances of illocutionary acts in her speech, including representative 33 utterances, expressive 32 utterances, declarative 13 utterances, directive 9 utterances, and commissive 7 utterances. Analyzing speech acts helped advance our understanding of the speaker's intentions and communicative goals. Without this understanding, communication can be hindered by misinterpretations and misunderstandings.

Abstract

This paper aim to find out the effectiveness of digital learning curriculum 2013 in pandemic era. This paper is focused on how to design digital learning based on Curriculum 2013 in the middle of the COVID-19 Pandemic that is affecting all aspects of life including in part of education. In this paper, descriptive content analysis techniques and literature reviews are employed as the methodology. All of the information is obtained from scientific articles related to the material and the focus raised in this article. From the results of the analysis collected, the author reveals that although there are several advantages and disadvantages that can be obtained from online learning as we are more able to relax in carrying out activities. There are also some problems that must be faced by students and from teachers when undergoing online learning in a pandemic situation, such as validly, reliably, and long-distance communication. Based on the discussion, digital learning in curriculum 2013 can be solution to solve the problem, the advantages of digital learning such as interactive e-book, in-site and out-site classroom, creative learning, and digital literacy. The authors then concluded that teachers and students could still have to find some tools, materials, methods, and learning resources that could be used to support and facilitate students in online meetings.

Abstract

The Minahasan community of North Sulawesi, Indonesia has witnessed a significant shift in women's roles and empowerment in recent years. This study examined the economic and social/political empowerment of Minahasan women, including their participation in income-generating activities, entrepreneurship, community leadership, and advocacy for rights and representation. However, this empowerment has also brought about challenges as Minahasan women grapple with the double burden of balancing their newly acquired roles with traditional domestic responsibilities of childcare and household duties. Through a comprehensive library research approach, this study analyzed the tensions and role conflicts experienced by Minahasan women as they navigated the contrasting societal expectations. Key findings revealed the strain on family dynamics, potential neglect of children's upbringing, and marital relationship challenges arising from the double burden. The study also identified strategies and best practices for reconciling these contrasting roles, such as promoting equitable domestic workload sharing, establishing childcare support systems, advocating for flexible work arrangements, and fostering societal attitude changes towards gender norms. Ultimately, this research highlights the importance of addressing the double burden challenges faced by Minahasan women to ensure their empowerment is sustainable and does not come at the cost of sacrificing traditional caregiving responsibilities or family well-being.

Abstract

In the era of revolution industry, it is believed that the integration of technology in the language learning activity widely increase. The purpose of the research was to investigate the implementation of multimedia as technology integrated in the Translation course learning activity. A quantitative approach is employed in this study with 47 students from English Education Department of Univesitas Lancang Kuning selected by using total sampling technique. This research was descriptive quantitative using survey design. The data collected by using a Likert Scale questionnaire with three indicators of Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) namely perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and attitude toward using. After that, the data was analysed by using descriptive statistic. Overall, it was found that the statistical data of multimedia implementation in the Translation course is about 3.99. It is claimed into “moderate” category. It indicates that the multimedia implementation in the Translation course helps the students to be more confident during the class. It also makes students enjoy the learning process. Multimedia also made the learning process become effective and efficient

Abstract

The aim of this study is to reveal the tragedy experienced by the main character Mata Hari in Coelho’s The Spy. The main characters struggle to pursue her dream, until the end she had to face the tragedy of her death. This study is using qualitative research. The primary source is the novel itself The Spy. While secondary sources include books related to the analysis of the research and relevant book and resources that support the analysis; quotation, definition, and statement. The death of Mata Hari as the main character in Coelho’s The Spy is a tragedy. That becomes a history of her struggle. Married then moved and lived in Indonesia, precisely in Malang, because Rudolf MacLeod or Mata Hari’s husband was assigned there. With confident that after married will change Mata Hari’s for the better. Yet different things got, Mata Hari was only made a seizure by the husband. The days she lived on the island of Java, only became endless nightmares. The result of this study shows that tragic consequences of life in Mata Hari bring her to death. It because of the way of her life: being divorced, being a popular exotic dancer, becoming a mistress.

Abstract

The aim of the research was to determine whether or not authentic materials are attractive to SMA Negeri 9 Bulukumba students in the tenth grade, as well as to improve the students' achievement in paragraph writing utilising authentic resources. Quasi-experiment research methodology was used. The study was conducted in the academic year of 2023–2024 at SMA Negeri 9 Bulukumba. There were 300 students in the study, divided into 10 classes. Out of 300 students, 40 were chosen randomly and divided into two groups: the control group and the experimental group. This made up the sample. Test writing instruments were employed. The test was used to gather information about the students' writing proficiency. The t-test was used to evaluate the data. The study's findings demonstrated that students' proficiency in writing paragraphs with authentic materials is greater to their proficiency with writing paragraphs without them. The mean scores of the students’ post-test who were taught using authentic materials were 76.55. However, the students' achievement on the post-test that was taught without the use of authentic materials had a mean score of 59.75. It can be stated, then, that teaching students with actual materials improves their ability to write paragraphs.
