Abstract

This study was conducted with the aim of describing the meaning of tokuwela adat in Sangowo Village, and to describe the implications for regional literature in Sangowo Village. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative by using several data collection techniques in the study, namely observation, interviews and documentation. Based on data analysis, it is concluded that the meaning of tokuwela custom is a type of dance, namely the dance of the spirit of togetherness. Which is carried out during the wedding procession, the evening procession for young people's entertainment, the procession to enter a new house and entertain guests. in the wedding procession this dance has a meaning as building a generous household and conveying their joy, then the evening procession of entertainment for young people this dance has a meaning as only to enliven their village and they enjoy the entertainment, then the procession enters a new house which has meaning as gratitude, gratitude for what they get, and the last is the procession of welcoming guests which has the meaning as showing a sense of appreciation even though the person is not yet known by the local community. And for the implications for regional literature, the culture of the people of Morotai Island, especially in Sangowo Village, is a reflection of the sincerity of the soul and the spirit of being grateful for the gift of God Almighty to the land of its people.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the students' obstacles in speaking skills. This research was conducted offline and distributed questionnaires to students. The subject in this study were fifteen students in fifth semester at the English Education Study Program of Muhammadiyah University. This study used a qualitative method and a questionnaire was used as an instrument to obtain the necessary data. The data analysis technique is descriptive analysis. From the results of the data, it shows that the fifth semester students experience problems in speaking English fluently they cannot acquire vocabulary properly, the lack vocabulary and are unable to use parts of speaking English fluently.

Abstract

This research entitled Enhancing Students' Speaking Skill through Outdoor Learning Method of Fourth Semester Students of English Language Education Study Program at Khairun University in Academic Year 2022/2023 is intended to find out the implementation of outdoor learning in teaching speaking skill, and to find out the enhancing of students' speaking skill through the implementation of outdoor learning. In this study the researcher uses action research because the researcher describes the data inform of words rather than numbers. The researcher uses functional text uses students of fourth semester of English Language Education Study Program as the data source of this research. The research instrument used by the writer is in the form of observation checklist, and test. The data is in the research are mainly gathered through the use of pre-test, observation, questionnaires, and post-tests. In analyzing the data, the researcher applies descriptive tehnique. After the data are collocted, they are analyze based on five indicators; fluency,pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and accuracy in the functional text. The result shows that the implementation of outdoor learning method through three types pre-activity outdoor, while activity outdoor, and post-activity outdoor can improve the students' speaking skill. The implementation of outdoor learning method can improve the students' speaking skill of English language education study program at Khairun University in academic year 2022/2023. In the pre-test result, in which they formerly did not learn using outdoor learning methods , the mean of the pre-test was 58.02. After they learn English using outdoor learning method, the mean of post test was 70,8.

Abstract

The aims of this research are to find out what the inaccuracies in the translation of words, phrases, and sentences from English into Indonesian of the novel EAT PRAY LOVE and what Factors lead to those inaccuracies. This research employs descriptive method and qualitative approach approach proposed by Cresswell and Lodico at al. The key instrument in this research is the researcher herself. The data of this research are obtained from both the original and the translation of the novel EAT PRAY LOVE, which consists of the inaccuracies in the translation of words. Based on the data, the researcher finds quite of few inaccuracies in the translation of words, phrases, and sentences, which the problems findings are the tendency in using free translation which it caused the translator sometimes give addition, omission, and substitution in the translation, and the inaccuracy in choosing equivalent that sometimes make the translation sound unnatural. This indicates that (a) the translator fails to find the good equivalents. (b) The loss of concentration and carefulness while translating. (c) Misinterpretation of the meaning and the message in the source text. (d) unfamiliar with idioms/expression. (e) miscomprehention of the English sentence structure, especially complex sentences and noun phrases. (f) Misuse of omission, addition, and substitution strategy in the translation. (g) Miscomprehention of the theory of translation.

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether the Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) strategy can improve students' reading comprehension at SMA Negeri 2 Kota Ternate. The research method used is pre-experimental design. Which consists of pre-test, treatment, and post-test design. The population in this study were students of class X-G SMA Negeri 2 Kota Ternate. Using a convenience sampling technique involving one X-G class. as the sample, 30 students at class.  The results of the study show that the Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) strategy can improve students' reading comprehension in Class X-G at SMA Negeri 2 Kota Ternate. It is proven that the Pre-Test score is 48.73 and the Post-Test value is 68.77. Based on the difference in scores obtained by students in reading comprehension, it showed an increase from the pre-test to the post-test where the increase in students' reading comprehension increased. Significant improvement in student achievement. Thus, the null hypothesis (H0) is not accepted, while the alternative hypothesis (Hi) is accepted. Therefore the researcher concluded that. The Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) strategy is effective in learning reading comprehension. because students understand more easily with predictions that identify main ideas and supporting details and can be seen from the results of better student reading scores.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to know whether the use of Total Physical Response in teaching vocabulary competence. This research used quantitative method especially pre-experimental design trough pre-test and post-test. The data were collected by the researchers used three steps namely pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The researcher used vocabularies test to know the students' competence. Then, the researcher applied Total Physical Response to know the students' competence in mastering vocabulary. The result of the data indicates that the use of Total Physical Response can improve students' vocabulary competence. It can be seen in the result of pre-test=1050 and post-test=1348. The result of statically analysis of the level significance 0, 05 with the presented t-count=8, 3 is higher than t-table value=1,761. It means that the null hypothesis is rejected and it can improve students' vocabulary compotence. It can be stated that Total Physial Response is one of the affective way to iimprove students' vocabulary compotence.

Abstract

This study aimed at finding out the types of multiple intelligence used by students at the tenth grade of SMK Bina Insani Makassar, and which type was dominantly used by students. The objectives of the research were to find out (1) the types of multiple intelligence used by students, (2) the dominant type of multiple intelligence used by students. The researchers applied descriptive quantitative research to analyze of data. The subject of the research was the tenth grade of students at SMK Bina Insani Makassar consisting of 30 students and selected by using random sampling technique. The research used the Multiple Intelligence Inventory which was adapted from Walter McKenzie’s Inventory as the instrument. The research covered eight of multiple intelligence namely: Verbal-Linguistic Intelligence, Logical-Mathematical Intelligence, Visual-Spatial Intelligence, Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence, Musical Intelligence, Interpersonal Intelligence, Intrapersonal Intelligence, Naturalistic Intelligence.  The research showed that the type of multiple intelligence that were used by students in high category namely Intrapersonal Intelligence 26 (86.7%). The type of multiple intelligence that were used by students in moderate category namely Logical-Mathematical Intelligence 20 (66.7%). The type of multiple intelligence that were used by students in low category namely Interpersonal Intelligence 8 (26.6%). Then the dominant type of multiple intelligence based on highest score was Intrapersonal Intelligence with the score 247. The result of the findings indicated that most of students at the tenth grade used Intrapersonal Intelligence.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi jenis-jenis tuturan (utterences) yang tidak santun yang dituturkan oleh pembeli dan penjual di pasar tradisional Kota Ternate, menggunakan pendekatan skala kesantunan untuk menentukan jenis-jenis tuturan yang santun. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitan ini adalah metode kualitatif deskriptif. Penelitian ini menggunakan tiga teknik pengumpulan data, yaitu; 1) teknik observasi (observation); 2)  teknik simak dan catat; serta 3) teknik rekam (record). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa; enam (6) maksim kesantunan yang disampaikan oleh Leech. Semua maksim dilanggar oleh penjual dan pembeli dalam proses jual beli di pasar tradisional. Jumlah tuturan yang dilanggar dalam maksim-maksim itu sebanyak dua puluh lima (25); yang dilanggar penjual adalah dua belas (12) tuturan dan pembeli tiga belas (13) tuturan. Maksim yang paling banyak dilanggar oleh penjual dan pembeli adalah pada maksim maksim kebijaksanaan (tact maxim) yakni enam (6) pelanggaran tuturan. Pada maksim kesimpatian (symphaty maxim) tidak ada pelanggaran tuturan yang dilakukan oleh penjual dan pembeli. Skala kesantunan dijadikan ukuran kesantunan berbahasa dalam sebuah pertuturan disesuaikan dengan konteks pertuturan itu sendiri.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to discuss the effectiveness of the Total Physical Response (TPR) method in teaching imperative sentences for grade 7 students of SMP Negeri 6 Kota Ternate. This research was experimental research. The design of this research used a pre-experiment and the population in this research were students of class 7A SMP N 6 Kota Ternate with a total population of 186 students. Therefore, the researcher used convenience sampling where the authors 30 students as a sample in this research. The instruments used to collect data were pre-test, post-test, and questionnaire. The results of the average pre-test score of 17.66 and the average post-test score of 82.66.  In addition, the results of the t-test received are greater than the t-table, where the t-test is 33. 163 and the t-table are significantly 0.05 = 1. 699 with df = 29 so there is a significant development of students’ vocabulary (imperative sentence) and the ability to use the Total Physical Response method because it can improve grammar and vocabulary skills, especially imperative sentence.

Abstract

English speaking skills is an indispensable course in English language curriculum at tertiary level. However, it is not  easy for English learners in this context to achieve their fluency and proficiency in English speaking skill due to certain internal and external factors. Therefore, this study is to investigate challenges of speaking skills faced by English-majored At English Education Study Program Stated Islamic University Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi. The data obtained from the questionnaire with 81 students the results of this study showed that there are many challenges encountered by students in speaking English. Linguistic aspects such as fluency, pronunciation, and lack of vocabulary, grammar mastery are also parts of the challenges they faced in enhancing their English speaking.
