Abstract

Deixis is a word that shows the emphasis of a sentence on an object addressed by the speaker. This study also relates the grammatical elements in it where there are five types of deixis, each of which to has a word that indicates the sentence spoken by the speaker is shown to whom. This study investigated the five types of deixis in the film 'Dolittle' and found all the deixis in the film. In this film, it was found 1,238-person deixis (70.14%), 226 discourse deixis (12.76%), 150 social deixis (8.47%), 106 place deixis (5.98%), 45-time deixis (2.54%).

Abstract

The objectives of this research is to know students’ competence in critical reading at the fourth semester students of English Language Education Study Program, Khairun University consisting of 20 students who were selected by using purposive sampling technique. The researcher  applied quantitative descriptive method and analyzed the data by using critical reading rubric. From the data analyzed, the data showed nine students was categorized good. Ten students was categorized fair and one students was categorized poor. The analysis of questions the data showed that students’ got highest average score 56 on the question number eigh as categorized fair.  So, it can be concluded the students’ fourth semester of Khairun University Ternate have fair competence in critical reading.

Abstract

Sociolinguistics can develop with the application of ethnographic and ethno methodological approaches. The ethnographic approach is one of the social studies that examines and attempts to explain the rules, cultural norms, values, communicative competence, and linguistic competence related to the use of language as a social setting in a particular society. The ethno methodological approach is an approach that seeks to find the classifications and systems used by the community in making an understanding of the socio-cultural system of the community with a research focus on the phenomenon of everyday language use so that it is known that there is diversity in speech styles. These two types also developed along with the development of linguistics, namely with the birth of communicative ethnography, linguistic ethnography, and conversational analysis.

Abstract

This research aims to explore and analyse teachers’ perspectives on the teaching assistance program of Merdeka Belajar - Kampus Merdeka at SMK Negeri 1 Tidore Kepulauan. The research used qualitative method with questionnaire as the primer data and interview as the secondary data. The researcher selected three English teachers at SMKN 1 Tidore Kepulauan to involve in this research as a respondent. As a result, Teaching assistants in the MBKM program, supports school teachers with their English lessons. In addition, teaching assistants can adapt to the school and class environment and student behaviour within the class. When a manager gives him an opinion, he supports it. Second, teaching assistants also use learning media that appeal to the classroom, such as electronic media that are highly relevant today. In addition, we use several teaching strategies that can increase students' interest in learning and solve classroom teaching problems. They usually use games to boost the mood of their students while learning English. Finally, in order to grasp the student's learning progress, the teaching assistant will administer the test as an evaluation form and the test result will be evaluated by the teaching assistant. Therefore, the deficiencies in their teaching to students can be identified.

Abstract

This research discusses speech acts which are one of the basic elements in pragmatics. Speech acts consist of five categories, one of which is directive speech acts. This study aims to identify the types of directive speech acts contained in the cartoon film Raya and the last dragon, and also to determine the function of the directive speech acts used in the film. This study uses descriptive qualitative method in analyzing data. Data collection was carried out by reading film scripts and watching films to analyze the body movements, gestures and dialogues of each character. The results of the analysis show that there are eight types of directive speech acts found in the film, namely Question, Command, Advice, Asking, Entreating, Prohibiting, Permitting and Suggestion. Besides that, the general function of these types of directive speech act was found.

Abstract

This research was conducted with the aim of explaining the elements of the poetry imagery”Di Negeri Amplop” karya KH. A. Mustofa Bisri. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The data used are primary data and secondary data, data sources related to where the data obtained by the subject of this study are poetry texts. The data collection techniques used were observation and dokumentation. The data analysis tecnique used was data reduction, and conclusion. Based on the results of data analysis, it can be concluded that there are 7 images, namely; (1) visual images is an image generated by the sense of sight (eye), (2) auditory image is an image produced by mentioning or deciphering sound, (3) touch image is an image that chan be self by the sense of touch (skin), (4) olfactory imagery is an imagery related to the impression or image produced by the sense of smell, (5) tasting image is an image related to the impression or image produced by the sense of taste, and (6) feeling image is an expression of the poets by KH. A. Mustofa Bisri, there were 4 images obtained during the 5 days of the study, namely, (1) visual images, images created by the sense of sight (eyes), are explained about the conditions in this country which are made as materialistic countries or people who are concerned with power, property, money, etc. (2) hearing images produced by mentioning or describes the sound of a voice, which explains how cruel the ruler is who silences the mouths of people who want to convey the truth (3) motion images of something that seems to be moving, which explains the envelope  referred to here is not containng a letter containing envelopes containing money, envelopes can move anywhere and for anyone (4) imagery of feelings, expression of feelings of the poet to express these feelings, explain the poet to express his frustation by using a subtle satire tone to a ruler who is greedy for power, what is right can be wong and wrong can be right with an envelope.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the ability of students in reading at SMA Negeri 9 Halut. This study used a qualitative method with 20 students. Data collection was carried out by pre-test and post-test in the form of multiple choices. The results showed that students obtained very poor results (very poor in the pre-test. It can be seen from the average score of 47 out of 20 students and in the post-test students obtained sufficient with an average score of 70 out of 20 students. For grades the maximum pre-test students get very bad scores with a score of 47 and in the post-test students get sufficient with a score of 70 out of 20 students. .5 in the pre-test and 8.1 in the post-test of 20 students.Finally, the variation in the pre-test of students was 67 and the post-test was 112.2 of 20 students.

Abstract

The problems in this study were (1) whether the improvement of writing skills in personal experiences using the group investigation model of class VIII MTs students. Al-Khairaat Guraping the northern oba? (2) How to increase the ability to write personal experiences using the group investigation model of class VIII students at MTs Al-Khairaat Guraping Oba utara? The research was conducted with the aim of (1) To determine the results of the use of the group investigation model in learning to write personal experiences in class VIII students of MTs. Al-Khairaat Guraping northern oba. (2) To determine the increase in the ability to write personal experiences using the group investigation model of class VIII MTs students. Al-Khairaat Guraping northern oba. The method used in this research is quantitative descriptive. The population in this study were 70 students of class VIII MTs. Alkhairaat Guraping northern oba. While the sample in this study was 30 students at 50%. Based on the results of the analysis and conclusions, it can be seen (1) observations of teachers in the field of Indonesian studies that have implemented the teaching and learning process properly in accordance with the application of the curriculum and the use of learning tools in the form of syllabus and lesson plans in writing personal experiences;; (2) the initial test (pretest) of students who get very good qualifications (SB) are 6 by 20%, students who get good qualifications (B) are 26%, students who get quite good qualifications (CB) are 8 by 26 %, students who get poor qualifications (KB) as many as 5 as many as 16. Have not achieved an increase; (4) students who get very good qualifications (SB) are 14 by 46%, students who get good qualifications (B) are 23%, students who get quite good qualifications (CB) are 9 by 30 %, students who get poor qualifications (KB) as many as 0 students by 0% achieve an increase.

Abstract

Ternate language is currently predicted to be threatened with extinction. One of the factors is the need for cross-ethnic communication using Bahasa Melayu Ternate (a lingua franca used among cross-ethnic communication in North Maluku)  that resulted in a decline in the number of Ternate speakers. Ternate language identity vocabulary began to be forgotten and replaced it with Malayu Ternate’s vocabulary. Therefore, as a form of inventory, this morphological research in the field of affixation is the hope of awakening the vocabulary of the Ternate language identity that has been forgotten or abandoned. The purpose of this study was to find and analyze the affixation of the Ternate language. This research method uses descriptive qualitative. Sources of data obtained from informants and supporting data from previous research, books, and so on. The research location was in Dufa-Dufa village, North Ternate. The data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and recordings. The data analysis technique is through the stages of data reduction, presentation, and verification. The results showed that Ternate language affixation consisted of (1) prefixation, (2) infixation, (3) suffixation, and (4) confixation. Ternate language prefixes such as {ma-}, {si-}, and {ngu-}. Ternate language infixation such as {-ho-} and {-ro-}. Ternate language suffixes such as {-u} and {-i}. Ternate language conventions such as {si–i}.

Abstract

Skill in reading texts written in English as a foreign language constitutes a fundamental element of the establishment of English curriculum in Indonesia. The aim of this article is to investigate and explore the obstacles and difficulties faced by Indonesians in their learning activities which hampering the learners in gaining comprehension, and to view the pedagogy from the broader perspective on the theories of reading process. As the writer found, the learners are lack of language system understanding, lack of reading strategies, poor in recognizing the types of reading comprehension. Therefor, through literary study as the research method, the  result appeared that the obstacles and problems faced by the Indonesian affected by cultural background, English teaching and learning process, and approaches in teaching and learning.
